  2. of course, if you use that to bring them up before they have polish, then you put yourself in the same situation. I highly doubt Meyer outperforms his AAA numbers in the majors last year. If anything, that walk rate rises and MLB hitters destroy him.
  3. Quite a few interesting HS names available here. Kind of hope the Twins grab a few of them and hopefully get one or two signed. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/129634376/gems-bound-to-be-unearthed-on-draft-day-3 Not much in terms of catching help. Most are pitchers and middle infielders.
  4. yeah, org needs catching help. Any interesting names still on the board?
  5. Not sure Duffey is a good comp, as he was never the prospect Jay is. I think moving Jay to the MLB pen would be a mistake as it may take two or three years to develop him as a starter. One injury there and you now have an options issue. If the Twins are still in competition in a month and need pen help, I'd start calling up some of the kids in AA/AAA first. Personally, I'd probably put him in the Fort Meyers pen and have pitch 2-3 inning stints. If he does well there, I'd promote him to Chatty pretty quick in a similar role. Next year, he'd start at what level he finished as a starter.
  6. Not sure I agree. Correa has been much better than Buxton for one. I think Buck is up soon, but I wouldn't be surprised if he makes a stop in AAA first.
  7. Yes Nick, sorry, getting names confused with an actual Mark Burdi that I knew. I think you are being a bit over critical personally, especially since I know you were very high on Burdi. Likewise, you've been the one saying the Twins should emulate the Cardinals (which is what they've done with these relievers). Ironically, this is about 1 pick so far. Maybe 2 if you count Jay, but given that pretty much every scout out there pegs him as a starter, I think you are being unfair if you do. Given the consternation, I'd have thought they were taking every relief pitcher out there. Half of the guys they have gotten today people thought were going in the 2nd round. That's a pretty good haul, especially considering that it will be a pretty decent draft if one guy taken today has a productive career.
  8. Perhaps, but that 2012 draft netted Walker and Buxton. They didn't do the big RP thing in 2013. They did it a bit more last year. Not quite sure I'm ready to label those drafts as failures. There are some decent bats down there, just nothing people are excited about. I get that. But the Twins drafts the last few seasons have been pretty good in terms of the results they produced. I'm really not going to get down on them there. You want to see bad drafts, go look at some of those mid-2000s drafts.
  9. I saw power and contact issues and thought ABW. Probably true, though from what I understand, ABW isn't going to light the world on fire defensively... Perhaps this is Vargas part 2... Who knows. I'm guessing they have money to sign. Those senior signs have very little negotiating power. I suspect Jay goes under slot. Cody might as well. That gives them room to pony up a bit more for some of the kids.
  10. BTW, side note on relievers, those guys are the lowest in terms of risk as you need two pitches (maybe one if it's filthy) that you can reasonably command to make it to the show. Those guys can be flipped quite easily too, as they are always needed. Don't mind getting relief pitchers. I didn't like the 2012 strategy, but so far, it hasn't exactly hurt them.
  11. Well, 2012 is still too soon to judge it, but Tyler Duffey and Taylor Rogers have turned into pretty decent prospects. So is Mark Burdi and JT Chargois I might add.
  12. Agreed. Problem is that the pitching they will want to trade isn't tradable, and Ryan doesn't exactly have a penchant for prospect for prospect type trades. I could see a guy like Dean getting sent away for decent relief help now, but I don't see this logjam going away.
  13. I'm kind of hoping for a lot of prep guys today.
  14. Glad they went upside here. Not a huge fan of the pick, but I think that has more to do with me not being a huge fan of the draft this year. Allard was my guy, but what do I know? He went 14th, so I'm guessing a few others didn't think he was the BPA there either. The real issue as I see it is a crowd forming for the rotation in a couple years. That isn't a bad thing, but they will still have Nughes, Nolasco, and Santana under contract with Berrios, May, Gibson, Duffey, (presumably Jay), Rogers, Meyer, and Dean all potentially making a case for a spot. They are going to have to trade off some of these guys or simply release them. That doesn't include guys like Hu, Thorpe, Gonsalves, or Stewart who could all suddenly rise pretty quick.
  15. Yeah, I think the final decision that TR, theo, etc. are making is something along the lines of 'yeah, I'll go overslot for him' or 'no I won't'. Not much else. The GM might dictate a lower slot strategy to get high upside guys, but I'd imagine that even that is done with input from the scouting guys.
  16. Seems the team has been struggling a bit more. Hopefully they take this series and get back on track. Vargas I think will help. Would still like to see some additional help in the pen. Hopefully the starters each go 7 innings and my concern is moot.
  17. Interesting... I always assumed the players would have some kind of idea from scouts where they may be selected.
  18. I have a feeling they take Allard ahead of Aiken. I also think Allard will sign for less allowing them to grab a couple more HS guys.
  19. I'm pretty convinced that prospecting is baseball's equivalent to being a drug addict or gambling, or some vice like that. It is very addicting. Every guy you follow has some chance to be the next big star and you can say that you were following his career from before anyone actually knew about the guy.
  20. I'd pass here. I think drafting high upside HS talent at this point makes a ton more sense than 1 good prospect and a bunch of easy sign college guys.
  21. I'm not quite ready to give up on Meyer yet personally. I think he still gets another chance at the rotation sometime soon.
  22. I think the Twins are going to run into a real issue of figuring out who to get rid of in the near future. Every time someone gets a promotion, a person above them needs to be promoted, released, or can be put on the DL. The problem with pitching right now is that there aren't a lot of names in AAA/AA that are candidates for outright release. A lot of these guys could have an MLB future, even as a 5th starter. You don't release those guys. I wouldn't be surprised if you see the Twins unloading some of them at the deadline for complimentary pieces to fill spots in the pen.
  23. They always do profiles on the least likely to be drafted earlier on Only way a guy like this is in play is if there's a major under slot deal in place and a lot of tough sign HS guys in mind.
