  1. The Twins seem to like their safe college arms in round 2. Hopefully that's the case b/c they are getting a guy under slot to go after some more prep picks later in the 2nd/3rd.
  2. If Jay keeps this up for a few more weeks, I have to think they'll move him to AA. That's ridiculous. That said, 133 innings is probably near the top end of what they want him to do this year, so I wouldn't be surprised if at one point he returned to the pen.
  3. Baseball, politics, and a lecture on the intricacies of Eldgers Op. 39. That's a wide range for a few gun-toting weenies.
  4. If it was like my HS, they weight honors courses on a 4.5 scale and AP course on a 5.0 scale. Congrats to your son. He obviously did well. Did he make valedictorian?
  5. I don't think it's fair to expect players to be any more crafted to their jobs than we are to ours. Should we ditch social media and focus solely on our jobs? If so, kiss posting at TD, facebook, twitter, or whatever goodbye.
  6. It's likely both talent and the league. It's a pitching friendly league, but it isn't as though Jay, Stewart, and Gonsalves have been below average or something across the league. They've all done quite well.
  7. I know Walker hasn't been great this year, but it's encouraging to see a month with his OBP 100 points higher than his BA. Hopefully he's figuring that out a bit. If so, I think the BA comes back around.
  8. he will likely be gone by the time we pick.
  9. Letting Ortiz go was a mistake, I don't think anyone disagrees with that. But people often forget the context of such decisions. Ryan attempted to trade Ortiz that offseason and got nothing for him. When Ortiz was released, no one picked up his contract. It wasn't until he was a FA signing at half of what he would have made in arb. Like it or not, money talks, and it did to the Twins just as much as it did to the other 29 teams. The difference is that the Twins couldn't have signed him for the deal Boston got (CBA rules) and no one was even willing to trade org filler for the guy to take on said contract. yeah, it was a mistake, but we tend to forget that given his paycheck and production, no one was willing to roll the dice with him, not until he was off the 40 man. Now in hindsight, Ryan would have collected something nice for him, or someone picks up his contract instead.... but that never happened.
  10. I don't think it's quite that simple (nor should it be). There's only 15 spots on the 40 man reserved for minor leaguers. I think if a prospect is doing fine and on the 40 man, that cup of coffee is going to be good for him. A rotating DFA list on a 40 man roster will eventually bite you in the rear. I do think it's reasonable to say that if you call up a prospect on said list, that you play them with some consistency. A day or two on the bench isn't going to hurt a kid's development. Weeks on the bench certainly will.
  11. Trolling linked in for potential GM resumes.... got to say that takes fandom to a new level.
  12. Dominos has been doing it for years... even going as far as to claim they improved said crummy product.
  13. Honestly with Boshers, I hope he gets more than a 2015 Tonkin chance before he's sent down/DFAd. He was doing well enough in AAA to warrant a shot.
  14. He was all around rushed. He needed more time in the high minors, but least we forget, his first full season he played in 2 levels of A ball (and did quite well). He started his second full season in high A and promptly got hurt and missed pretty much the whole year.
  15. I've got to think this would hurt more than help to be honest. You want a draft to bring out 3 major leaguers in some capacity or not. If that one pick is a bust, that whole class is a bust with it. Even if that one pick is a star, it's more difficult if they get no one else with it. Granted, NYY or LAD can go out and get that FA... assuming of course there's one out there that fits the need, and those big FA contracts are rarely benefical to the team throughout the entire deal...
  16. He's playing CF. At the very least, that tells me he'd be above average in the corners. Not the best metric, but the fact he's getting PT out in CF says they like his defense.
  17. The Twins have just under 6M with their first four picks. They could quite feasibly walk away with four pretty good prep players if they played it smart. Yeah, that means no Manning at 3M (and he's probably there b/c he already has a deal in place). Given the needs of the farm system, I think higher ceiling HS guys makes a lot of sense. Then again, I'm not in charge of the draft I think they have to punt on a higher round pick to make it work, and I'm not sure everyone will need 3M though. I'm guessing a 1.5-2M range could get quite a few prep guys interested in going pro, especially if they agree to pay for college should a major league career not work out. They could cut a pre-draft deal with one or two of Whitley, Wentz, or Garrett under slot in round one and over slot in 2 and then used the savings at one/punting in later rounds to pick up Rortvedt and Cooper Johnson in round 2 or 3. Bottom line is that I'd be pretty ecstatic if they walked away with 4 HS guys and an easy college sign through round 3. If they could get them for a total of just under 7M, they could do it with another easy college sign later on in the draft. It fits the needs of their current system and you still walk away with more talent than what you would if you just grabbed your BPA at every slot (and who knows, perhaps a few of them are their BPAs anyway).
  18. Yes, there is still brokering going on. I think my point though is the teams who are doing the worst are the ones walking away with more talent (on average). The Twins have 4 spots in the two rounds this year. They can walk away with three (or four if they get lucky) higher ceiling HS tough signs if they play their cards right, and that is more than what they would get if this wasn't going on. Lots of those kids end up in college instead. I'm fine going on ceiling if it means taking an easy college sign with a higher pick to free up some cash for some higher ceiling guys that need developing. Given the state of the Twins system currently, that makes a ton of sense... Now what they will do on the other hand is a different story.
  19. I won't argue with you on the front office track record here, they should have never went north with him to begin with. I don't have too much of an issue with a 2 week cup of coffee though, if that's all it is. But then again, I think he needs more than 2 more weeks in AAA. I do hope though that we see an improved Buxton. I'd call it a win if he came up and just took good at bats, even if the results didn't show.
  20. agreed... glad this was the move. When Nolasco finally gets the DFA, you might actually see May in the rotation for a bit.
  21. That actually does make more sense to start with St. Peter if there's a culling to be had. That could probably happen sooner than later while giving the new guy a chance to observe what is and is not working well in the org and then make changes as needed at an appropriate time.
  22. Like it or not, the starting CF is hurt and I think there would be a lot more consternation of Maestro spent every day of those 2 weeks manning CF. I'll believe it's more of the same if Buxton is doing poorly and not immediately sent down when Santana comes off the DL. There is no harm in a 2 week cup of coffee, especially if he's playing every day.
  23. I think he should have spent the remainder of the season in Rochester (or close to it), but if this is just the 15 day type callup, I'm not seeing the issue. That's what the 40 man is for and Buxton is on it. No harm in assessing him for 2 weeks to see what improvements have been made and where he still needs work.
  24. In this case, teams with more picks in the top 10 or with higher picks are the ones with more money. So isn't like the Yankees are just buying everyone. I don't mind the system. As for Ben's comments. College players have less leverage, especially seniors. Usually those deals are worked out in advance, so the guy taking the underslot deal is agreeing to a number knowing what position he's going to be taken.
