Front Page: Miguel Sano and His Future in Minnesota
Platoon replied to Patrick Wozniak's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We also took a road trip to Beloit that year on the bike and saw him during a late regular season game. Hit a line drive off the base of the CF fence, one of the hardest baseballs I ever saw hit, also had another single. Also kicked a garden variety GB, and dropped a pop up just behind third base. I texted my son, and said he can hit with enormous power, but that the kid who played third base on his old high school team would eat him alive with a glove. So far, I think those observations continue to hold true. -
This is a question that really can't be answered because in my opinion it all evolves around Buxtons health, since it seems Sano has turned the corner on the health issue. Unless of course he shows up next spring at 325. IF both are healthy it's Buxton. Not only is he a elite CF, he is so good he makes his side mates look even better than they really are. A game changer on defense, and on the bases. His hitting was on the upswing, which followed his history in MiLB. Sano can flat out hit with power. But a good slider gets him out too often, and his defense anywhere on the field is easily replaced. So the question really is, will Buxton ever stay healthy? Sadly, I doubt that he will.

Playoff games are tighter, you may need a lefty specialist more. And you need length with the shortage of not only starters but starters who can drag you into the 6th. Add in the fact that both the opponents will be pretty offensively laden, and you need both arms and flexibility. Perez the LOOGY may work in that case, as could Thorpe. I would think twice about Brusdar. He was impressive in Mpls. against KC. But we aren't going to Kansas Dorothy. (or MO) As for Willians, a lot of that depends on Garvers health. The Turtle isn't hitting well right now, but Andrainza hasn't payed in quite awhile either.

Well there are some positives here. One is that Duffy has become the Twins best bullpen choice, passing Rogers. Plus Duffy seems immune to extra usage. The other good news is that that there are no amounts of weaknesses that a dozen runs a game won't cover!

Rosario should get some "quality rest time" for one of two reasons. If he is hurt and scuffling, then he needs to get better before Oct. if he isn't hurt, his recent attitude and lack of effort are signs of some sort of problem. The jogging on the bases, the flip throws into the infield, not cutting the ball off in the corner the other night, and the hustle "double" on the ground ball last night are not acceptable for one of these two reasons.

I stuck up for Esdie when Molitor had a fit over him stealing an open third base with two outs, and later had him sent down. But the one last night wasn't excusable. First off it's an unwritten rule, do not make the first or third out at third base. Secondly he did not hustle, posed, sloughed off, or dogged it. Take your pick. The problem isn't simply this play. His attitude in the last 6? weeks has seemed somewhat poor. Lacksidasical efforts catching fly balls, not exactly hustling chasing gap shots. Something is amiss. Basically he doesn't seem happy right now. I know that's a view from a distance, but frankly he gives the impression of someone who doesn't give a bleep!

The amount of baseballs that make it to the backstop for this team is starting to get beyond acceptable. Whether passed, WP, or whoever the catcher is.

The Garver thing looked weird. Unless Garver simply got up on his own and was getting ready, it was a bad non move by Rocco. If Garver did get up on his own to get ready, it was still a bad non move by Rocco. Garver could have PH and not even caught. He was the most obvious choice to get back in the game. Maybe Chief was right? This resting thing is getting out of hand.

I 'liked' some of the posts because they were in tune with my thoughts on this. I think the most interesting thing about the HR record could be its permanence of MLB decides to go back to a real baseball next year and in the future. To me this is sort of like moving the mound in to 54' and being impressed by the amount of strike outs pitchers are accruing! .

Front Page: Silver Linings Amid September Storms
Platoon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As you noted the Twins haven't competed well with winning teams for quite some time, long before the injury bug bit them. Most teams have that bug. Cleveland and the Yankees got the early version. While I doubt it was intentional, I look at this team as one built to win during the season. Offense and depth sustain you during a long season. Quality sustains you in the playoffs. And some luck. The strength of the team was there OF defense, which due to injuries is in jeopardy. To me the next best thing they have going for them is the bullpen. It's been very good of late, although Rogers struggles with repeated use is concerning. The just don't think the offense will be as impactful as one might think. Recent games against some decent arms show the Bombas somewhat less frequent. But of all your points, I like #9 the best. The Twins are building an operation to legitimately compete in the context of their market situation. That's where the success and the fun will come from eventually.- 23 replies

There is virtually no doubt the Twins will be in the playoffs. No stress level there. But simply out of abject curiousity, why would Sano not hit in an attempt to prolong the game? Was he hurt?

Should We Be Upset With Yasiel Puig?
Platoon commented on Patrick Wozniak's blog entry in Patrick Wozniak's Blog
............ And as for Rosario? -
"If there was no ill intentions in taking the drug, Pineda could have quickly reached out to team doctors or trainers for an opinion. He made a choice to forego that route because of the assumed answer. Whether Pineda believed there would be substantial helpful effects for whatever he was trying to mask or not, he chose to turn............."This seems to insinuate that Pineda was using a substance beyond a diuretic? Yet in your attached column you laud "performance reigns supreme"? While you did add a semi qualifier that you were discussing HOF ballots the gist of it seemed to be that high performance levels are all that count when evaluating talent. Not how, or when, or whatever else occasioned it. I don't deny that trying to evaluate comparitive MLB production over the years is an almost impossible task. But if Big Mike was using the diuretic to mask some form of PED then the Pineda we saw was not the real Pineda. He was just another version of Bonds, Aaron, and Clemens in your article. A lot of what they did was also wrong, but testing and insinuations were winked at. Pineda simply got caught trying to enhance his performance. MLB players are mercenaries. They go wherever the money and the opportunity exist. They get that money, and those opportunities by performance. How they acheive that performance can or cannot be a moot point. But it can't be both. As an aside, juicing the baseball does not level the playing field, it simply puts a bump in it. IF they return to a sane version of a baseball next year, all of the HR records set this year are an abberation. For the sake of the game, I hope they do that. But oddly, for the sake of future record keeping, to do so would make all the numbers accumulated this year have the asterisk debate rear its head again.

Sano has 6 hits, 7 BB, and 18 SO's in the last ten games. When he hits something, he hits it. I didn't see PA listed but at approx. 4 per game he is approaching a SO clip of 50% again. Takes lots of mashing to cover that number. Was a fun game for about 7 innings, but the last few innings featured the worst of the Twins. Poor baserunning, another 1B blunder, another futile dive at a hopeless fly ball, non blocked wild pitches, and a less than excellent play on Lindors ball. While there wasn't a good look from replay on the single to that scored a couple, I was surprised Rosario did not take a shot at the plate?

When you don't score 8 runs a game, little things get noticed. 1B defense which had been claimed as unimportant becomes important. Diving at fly balls that land 4' away, and wild pitches turned into a base. Three wild pitches went past Castro/Garver. The first two there were men on third and normally would have scored two, and extra inning would not have been necessary. The third one finally caught up to the Twins. The whole catching down on one knee, especially with men on base seems silly. You can't shift, not only side ways, but up and down. Neither Castro or Garver could be consider extremely athletic as it is, and this simply immobilizes them further! Not all wild pitches are created equal, some are so easily blocked the scoring should be allowed as a passed ball.

I wondered sort of the same. Not many missed bats for that velocity. Lots of time yet, he must have something going on to be up here at this age. But if it's straight, it's still meat regardless of the velo.

Hildy is a lovable gimmick pitcher. And generally (statistically) gimmick pitchers have a short shelf life. Sooner or late that flat floater has to cross the plate. All pitchers need to hit spots, but his style allows for a very small margin of error.

Quadruple like this! It makes no difference whether Baldy should play match ups, or whether he should rely on his only dominant LHRP. What matters is what he actually does. And so far, in far less significant games he has leaned on Rogers far more than any other pitcher.
