  1. Earlier today, Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz was suspended for 25 games in a violation of the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. In a phone interview, General Manager Ruben Amaro said that he doesn't think that the suspension will prevent future negotiations on a contract extension, according to Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Amaro also said that the club may look at other catching options, but it won't be a frontline piece. We learned earlier tonight that the Phillies signed Humberto Quintero to a minor league pact, but the deal was apparently reached before the news on Ruiz was known. Read more at http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/#uXv3gBMoFDAB3fWR.99 Shame on everyone of you (you know who you are, we do too!) who compared Mauer's numbers to Ruiz's this past summer. Cheaters never prosper in MLB (anymore anyway!)
  2. If there is such a logjam of OF talents in the minors, maybe the "brains" of the Twins operation should try to turn some of it into SP and MI as there seems to be not such logjam.
  3. I think that a 2 year, $16M contract would have been worth a flyer on him, except that the teams cup runneth over with OF's. Good move for both Toronto and Cabrera.
  4. Revere has barely two years cracked into the arb clock and won't be a FA till 2018. He's a pretty good bet to put up 2 wins+ for bottom dollar over the next 4 seasons. That is a little more than a toss in, esp. when you're weighing him against a guy with 50 million of guaranteed money coming his way. The Jays would snap that up in a heartbeat. Not a huge fan of Revere's skill set (he seems like a good kid), but NO to using him get Buehrle unless the Jays throw in a pile of $$$ also.
  5. Kudos to the Jays for the Deal of the Decade, if not Century. That being said, I don't think they are done. There are several free agents out there yet plus, it seems, they are very creative on the trade front. While Morneau would be a great publicity move, I don't think they look at him before next years trade deadline.
  6. Here is the news on MLB Trade Rumors
  7. I agree with going young. 15 years ago there were no prospects to fast track. 8-10 years ago there were major league players at most positions, so letting the kids develop one level at a time made sense. Now, the team needs major league talent at several positions, trade what they can to get this talent or to stock the minor leagues and start bringing up/advancing Arcia, Sano, Hicks, etc... to see what they are made of. Several teams have done this over the past few years and for every Harper, Machado, Garcia, etc... there have been failures and there is no promise that those who have had success will sustain it, but you don't know if you don't try. 6-8 year plans for every prospect just seems too generic, players mature at different rates and handle success/failure differently.
  8. Blame it on Big Papi....turning a power hitter into a singles and doubles hitter. Blame it on Torii Hunter....refusing to overpay for a CF who was about to be a corner OF...... Blame it on Johan Santana.....a small framed workhorse who's career was about to be decimated by forseeable injuries. Blame it on Nathan....a closer who can't close in the playoffs. Blame it on Cuddy and Kubel.......well, one took more money and one wasn't offered a contract. Top tier FA's won't sign with the Twins because the Twins won't go all in after them. And probably rightly so. Except for defense, Willingham, Cuddy, Kubel and Hunter are about the same player, but one earned $18M while the others earned $8M or less. Papi is an injury plagued 1B/DH, wait, we have one of those. Santana, oh my could you imagine the backlash on these boards if the team had kept Santana and gotten 46 wins for $100M over 5 years with 2 more years and $50M to go. The posters on here might even leave Mauer alone if the team still had that contract. The team paid Nathan and had a viable replacement already on the team, they just didn't know it (Perkins). The one thing I think the team shies away from is Boras clients, and he usually represents the big name guys. Just sayin'!
  9. The Twins picked Denard Span with the 20th pick that year, Cain was chosen 25th.
  10. Twins won't take on Lincecum's contract.
  11. Pitching may not slump, but it does have bad games (see Verlander, Jason; Sabathia, CC; Carpenter, Chris X2; Zimmerman, Jordan).
  12. The Rangers aren't going to dismantle their team for two players with injury history, I believe thats why they are hedging on Hamilton. But if they'll do Butera for Andrus, by all means jump on it!
  13. Cecil Fielder's last good season was his age 32 season, when he hit 39 HR's with the Yankees and Tigers. He was out of MLB after his age 34 season. Prince is already showing signs of not aging well - less range, power numbers down, inability to go 1B to 3B or score from 2B on a single. Detroit will not be happy with the last 2-4 seasons of this contract. And we will see how Leyland handles things when Martinez returns from injury next year. A good problem to be sure, but with Avila playing well and Cabrera and Fielder on the corners, will Martinez want to DH everyday?
  14. And, oh by the way, Liriano had a 5.40 ERA with Chicago and his WHIP was higher, BB/9 was higher, SO/9 was lower and SO/BB was lower. Yeah he really improved with the change of scenery. Leave him be, hell he might be out of baseball and playing slow pitch softball with Delmon Young in 2 or 3 years,
  15. If there is any team that could get the maximum out of Liriano I would say it would be the Rays. They get everybody else's best, why not his?
  16. Dreamers, dreamers, dreamers. If trades were that easy and GM's were that agreeable to get screwed, maybe these trades would happen. Span or Revere plus prospects might land one of Johnson, Shields or Hanson, not 2 or all 3. Plouffe, Parmalee, etc... lands minor league prospects at best. This year the team needs to go after FA's or risk another losing season or emptying the minors to land a frontline starter who will have no one to play behind him.
  17. I think that having Hardy in the line-up everyday would have been a good thing. Span, Revere, Mauer, Willingham, Morneau, Doumit, Plouffe, Hardy & Carroll would have been offensively and defensively superior to Florimon, Escobar, Casilla, Valencia, Burroughs, etc...
  18. Too much BS. Speculate all you want, the decision is Ryan's, with the Pohlad's approval, real or perceived. It will all be addressed and the fans will be given answers, hopefully sooner rather than later. And everyone involved will be better served if it is sooner.
  19. Why not extend him now? Yes the team has OF prospects up the a$$, but that is exactly what they are, PROSPECTS. They may or may not pan out. In a couple of years the team will be needing a veteran DH, why waste time looking through the scrap heap and piles of rejects when he might already be on the team. And if it doesn't pan out or he gets traded, its not a big expense.
  20. Gee, it took a national scribe to capture the real Joe Mauer, even if only during the course of one day. How about a round of applause for LEN III, Joe C., Reusse, Souhan et al for dropping the ball, rolling it in the gutter, clanking the rim, throwing it in the dirt, etc... on doing this beforehand. Apparently Mauer has a sense of humor, is respected in the clubhouse, and, surprisingly, has a baseball mean streak.
  21. Waldrop, Vasquez, Perdomo, Pugh, & Slama, to name a few, should at least be invited to compete, because competition leads to.....
  22. Shoulda been outta the inning on the strike 'em out, throw 'em out that wasn't.
  23. I didn't realize the strike zone was a living, moving, changing thing from batter to batter, pitch to pitch.
  24. I think TK stuck around until somebody from within the ranks was ready to manage at the major league level. I think the Twins have several (ok, 2) candidates who they deem as ready to manage, bench coach Scotty Ullger and AAA manager Gene Glynn. My vote would be for Glynn and his staff (Bruno & Cuellar). But, in the end, it is Gardy's call and not anyone elses.
  25. Agreed on Gene Glynn and staff, especially if the rave reviews of Cuellar and Brunansky coaching abilities are true and can lead to success at the major league level. As far as restocking the minor league coaching staffs, players are still retiring every year, many of whom are wanting to begin a coaching career.
