  1. I think the Twins can do a few things that'll help. In season, I think we can add some payroll. It might not get us a great starter but maybe we could add a good bullpen arm (Houston Street type guy who's owed 9m next year?) If the team is out of it at the trade deadline, I think they should move Span if they can get a Pence-like deal for him (if he's healthy). They have the #2 pick in the draft, so they could grab a guy like Appel, Zimmer or Gausman. Finally, they'll have 24m coming off the books next year in starters salary and Morneau is gone the following year. They do have the resources to make a significant free agent signing (Grienke, Marcum) if they wanted to. As to your question. Sano has great trade value but I don't think we'd trade him. Benson might have the best trade value of someone we might actually get rid of. He's a top 100 prospect in AAA with great tools. We could probably get a decent pitcher or prospect in return for him.
  2. I mostly agree but a guy like Zimmer or Gausman could turn into a #1.
  3. I gotta say, I'm intrigued about Zunino at #2. If Buxton goes to Houston (a big if) an eventual Mauer/Zunino C/DH platoon could be pretty impressive.
  4. I'm a bit surprised, too. I'd rather have him on the roster than Plouffe.
  5. I think either Perkins or Blackburn goes to DL.
  6. Still waiting to get into the HOF but at least he's in the Supreme Court http://www.murraychass.com/?p=4579
  7. He didn't. Gardy said he thought Morneau pressed more when he sat on the bench and thought about his previous ABs.
  8. I've given up on Plouffe but since he's out of options, the Twins won't send him down yet. I wouldn't mind Parmelee getting some ABs as a RF/1B/DH type behind Mauer, Morneau and Doumit but I'm not sure if that'll happen with Clete's signing.
  9. Say what you will, Smith moved the team away from the piranha motiff. Gardy and Ryan want/like? it this way and with a big Target Field, maybe that is the way to go. Who knows. But get used to it.
  10. I don't think the Twins would pick up Baker's option. I could see them having him come back on a one year deal at, say, 4.5m.
  11. I'm not sure how much of that is his fault. The 07 draft we took Revere, which was panned at the time but now looks like a decent enough pick considering how weak that draft class was. There were 64 picks in the first round and supplemental round, we had one, and only a handful of players have really busted out. The big shock was Mike Stanton lasting until pick # 76. 06 we took Parmelee, Benson, Manship, Valencia and Tyler Robertson who might make it as a LOOGY. That's not a horrible draft, really. Benson's been a top 100 prospect two years in a row. It was another not so awesome first round. Parmelee, taken 20th, is already the 12th highest WAR player among those taken in the first round. In 05 we got Garza, Slowey, Duensing, Burnett, Tosoni (round 36!). Certainly some picks didn't work out and Garza was traded but all in all, I think the Ryan drafts were solid enough. Some picks were clearly financially driven, which shouldn't be a problem now, and with the second pick we should have a difference maker brought in.
  12. That's interesting. I wonder what Johnson's standing is with Ryan. Smith promoted Johnson to draft guy when he became GM. His drafts have been well received when they happened but the results haven't been great so far.
  13. Never heard that rumor before.
  14. Shane - do you think they all want to win the same amount? Marty Cordova admitted that he wanted the team to lose rather than o to extra innings. Is it possible a guy like Plouffe might just be ecstatic about bringing in 450k, win or lose?
  15. Marquis has been a better pitcher than Slowey. And the Twins are only paying him 250K more than Slowey's making this year.
  16. And yet Mauer became one of the top players in baseball. Projection is a big part of scouting/development. It is what it is and the Twins don't seem concerned about taking high school kids. In the last 15 drafts, they've used their first pick on a high school position player 9 times - six made the majors (Cuddy, Mauer, Span, Revere, Parmelee and Plouffe), two washed out (Moses and Garbe) and one is still in the system (Hicks).
  17. HS home run numbers probably aren't a good judge of future talent. Nearly every baseball scouting cite - Klaw, BA, Prospectus, Minorleagueball etc all have Buxton as one of the top possible picks, many thinking he should go 1-1.
  18. Exactly. Since 2008 (Slowey's best year) - Slowey - 90 ERA+, 466 ip, 3.4 WAR Liriano - 90 ERA+, 542ip, 4.4 WAR Blackburn - 93 ERA+, 713ip, 4.8 WAR Duensing - 104 ERA+, 378ip, 4.6 WAR
  19. I was going to post that Gardy should pinch hit for Parmelee since he can't hit lefties. Good thing I'm not the manager.
  20. I don't remember hearing/reading anything like that.
  21. I don't see how Twins can take Giolito. Assume Gio needs 4m (that's what BA.com cited) and Twins have just over 12m to spend. They also have 13 picks in the first 10 rounds. IIRC, the cap on the #2 pick is 6.2m. The Twins can't realistically get to 4m unless they draft someone at #2 that'll take several million less than that and then hope that no one else takes Giolito before pick #32.
  22. Crap. So why wasn't this injury diagnosed last year, when he was hurt?
  23. Well, it is the Twins. How about a scenario where the Twins take SS Merrero (probably slotted to go somewhere around 6th or later) and pay him 1m less than the cap for a #2 pick and use (pocket) that extra million somewhere else?
