  1. These last few weeks of ST have made me think he might just be ok. I'm still not sure how he'll handle flying across the country but I'm hopeful. I don't think he'll play a game at first this year though. I agree with FireGladden, no middle of the road, if he's healthy I think he can put up all-star like numbers and be the best DH in the game - .300/.390/.510 like numbers. If he's not healthy, it's 2011 again.
  2. It might be a bit more common. In his age 26 season, Torii Hunter had a 5.5% walk rate for his career and a K rate of 19.4%. Since his age 27 season, he's increased his walk rate to over 8% and lowered his krate to about 17%. Morneau, after his MVP season, showed even more increased plate discipline. Admittedly, neither was over 30 when they had their breakthrough but both had about 2000 PA in the majors by that time, about what Doumit has now.
  3. Gardy gets too much crap about bunting. Guess which team had more sac bunts last year- Twins or Yanks? (Yanks). Gardner (OBP .345) and Casilla (OBP .322) led both teams w/8, which makes sense since both can bunt for a hit and if they fail it goes down as a sac bunt. After that, the best on-base guy Gardy used to bunt was Revere (.310 OBP and pretty fast). Then it was a bunch of sub-.300 OBP guys - Butera, Nishi, Tolbert, Plouffe etc. Basically, automatic outs. Granderson, who hit 41 homers, had as many sac bunts as Tolbert.
  4. Seems like a pretty versatile lineup. I like Hendriks and Parmelee and with our bench options, Parmelee shouldn't see too many LH pitchers.
  5. I don't know if this is actually a good strategy or not but it seems whenever we have guys on 1st and 3rd, and especially when the guy on first is Span or Casilla, he should have them steal second. But it seems we never do that. Maybe that's the smart thing to do, I don't know. But he talks about wanting speed, that seems like a time to use it and put pressure on the defense. (Figured this was more fun to complain about than his bunting strategies or a discussion of who should be batting second).
  6. Twins have promoted a lot of guys from AA to majors, esp bullpen arms. I'm not concerned about that at all.
  7. Man, Morneau has been hot recently. Praying that holds over.
  8. I think he's there more to push/spot Valencia at third than to pinch hit.
  9. Reading some Philly fans and they think this guy would be a worse defensive 1b than Thome.
  10. In fairness to Parker, bloggers don't have to held accountable for things like that. :-)
  11. Mauer and Morneau both stay off the DL the entire year. Twins take shortstop Merrero (sp) #2 overall and this site explodes
  12. I don't see how it doesn't get in at this point. Even if he retired today, I think the voters would put him in on the first ballot.
  13. I think one point that Mackey may have been trying to make and that John seems to have missed is the accountability factor. John seems to think that if a blogger didn't supply "reliable information," no one would read them. I think that is a fantasy. The internet is full of very successful websites that cater to viewpoints based on crazy opinions, with no accountability. If a blogger wanted to write that Valencia is in Gardy's doghouse, or Punto is starting at short b/c he has pictures of Gardy, he'd find a audience regardless of the truth of that statement. Generally, I think the Twins bloggers and professional writers are pretty good, I enjoy reading most of them. But simply b/c a number of people read a free blog doesn't mean that the blog is giving reliable information.
  14. I have no idea what happened to cause this and I don't particularly care. I like this site (and Twinkie Town) because I like reading about baseball and, specifically, the Twins. However, I don't really come here for "news," I come for opinions and forums. As fun as Parker, John and Nick are, I have no trust whatsoever into their front office insights. I hate reading bloggers who say that the Twins didn't play player X because Gardy hates him or some such nonsense based on their own dislike of Gardy. I'll trust the professional journalists for real Twins news. They might not always be right but they're right a lot more often.
  15. It's not a lock that any of those three will make the team yet. Cabral was taken twice in the rule v draft so he'll be a free agent if he doesn't stick as a LOOGY. Baseball America said of him "Cabral keeps getting picked because he could be a useful left-on-left reliever with some history of success in the minors. He's been effective in the Dominican Winter League (1-0, 0.87). Cabral sinks his average (88-91) mph fastball that touches 93 mph, he has a decent changeup and throws a fringy slider." Luetge "doesn't really have a plus pitch, but his tick below-average fastball and average secondary stuff allows him to compete because he throws strikes." Sounds like a Twins type pitcher to me. Castillo "is a long way from a polished pitcher, but he has touched 96 mph and he has shown the makings of a solid breaking ball." Castillo is like Twins pitcher Manuel Soliman, a converted infielder learning to pitch. The Twins have had remarkable success with the strike throwing, no walk type pitchers. Taking a chance on a guy like Doyle made sense.
  16. I think the Twins actually had a flame thrower available for other teams to pick (Solimon?) but they all passed. The Twins don't have a lot of starting pitcher depth right now. Doyle could have given them one more guy. It didn't work out but it made sense. I don't think anyone expects anyone taken in the Rule V draft to become a Santana anymore. The rule changed. If you can get a serviceable back end starter, like Diamond, that's probably about as good as you'll get nowadays.
  17. I enjoyed my brief Sano experience - he hit a triple off the end of his bat (right past the firstbaseman) and almost fell down. He certainly doesn't get cheated on his swing.
  18. Maybe it took a bad hop. But I suspect that many 3B have made plays on worse hops. And I can't remember the last time I saw a 3B take a ball directly off the face, bad hop or not.
  19. What's most amazing, to me, is where he thinks the ball is going (down to the left) and where it did go (up to the right). Tigers can't keep him there much longer. I think there's longer video link from si.com. http://espn.go.com/mlb/spring2012/story/_/id/7709712/miguel-cabrera-detroit-tigers-takes-hard-grounder-face
  20. Thanks for all the suggestions. Got in a day early and watched the B game on the practice fields (right next to Terry Ryan) and fielding drills before going to watch Liriano's start today (two seats behind Terry Ryan) and finished it by watching Sano hit a triple in a scrimmage (no Terry Ryan). A lot more fun than I thought it would be.
  21. Agree 100%. In a chat last year, Klaw said he thought the Twins were the most active team in the international markets, which is something former GM Bill Smith should be proud of . I think what Highabove was concerned about was whether those people who scouted Nishi prior to us signing him would have a great impact on this years draft.
  22. I think there was a split in the organization about Nishi but I don't remember enough to know who wanted what. As for the draft, my understanding is that scouts do write ups but the cross checkers and regional coordinators (whatever they're called) have more pull. And the draft itself is conducted by Deron Johnson with input from those regional guys and, of course, the other front office guys. So whether or not one or two scouts thought Nishi was good probably won't have much impact on the draft board.
