  1. In his chat yesterday, Klaw was asked about Twins approach and noted, "I've heard them on Zimmer, and I know they've at least considered Giolito, so yes, they're looking at high upside arms."
  2. Yeah, Rendon (injuries and all) would be nice but probably unlikely. I wonder if the Dodgers, flush with moola and stuck with Gordon leading off and Rivera in left would put together a package around Zach Lee (BA #62, currently in A+).
  3. I think I mostly agree with you. I guess if the Twins are confident that Buxton will turn into our Matt Kemp or are worried about the potential health issues (that we haven't been privy too) of a guy like Zimmer or Guasman, I'd rather they go with a starter. I haven't seen much to make me think that Buxton is without a doubt the BPA.
  4. Is there a "draft order" of some kind or can all teams bid on the same player? I would think, money being equal, the Twins might have a good reputation in Latin America.
  5. Cool. I forget, how does the new signing procedure of Latin American talent work under the new CBA?
  6. Twins are on pace for about 2,750,000 in attendance. It would be interesting to see how a 85m payroll would go over after that.
  7. I'm not concerned with going over budget, I'm concerned about going under budget. Could you imagine the fallout if they passed on Buxton, Zimmer, Zunino and took Wacha or Almora (both top 10 guys but probably not top 5), signed them for 1-2m less than the recommended slot and then didn't use that money elsewhere? As Roger pointed out, if the Twins don't spend all of that 12m+, everyone should be pretty pissed.
  8. Yeah, I think Lawrie should just get a small slap on the wrist. The ump missed two calls. I'll be charitable and say the ump wasn't purposefully wrong but those were two pretty bad misses. Lawrie was right to be upset and the helmet was unintentional, although still stupid. That said, I think MLB throws the book at him.
  9. Yeah, that was what I was getting at.
  10. Not too much, no FO is perfect but generally, Terry Ryan's been pretty good. Bill Smith was fired, Ryan's been on the job for six months. They added Wayne Krivski (sp) to the FO. Give them time. The Twins had a long successful run but it was due to end. Injuries obviously escalated it but I don't think there's anything wrong with, in general, the way the Twins have created their teams over the last decade. I've seen your complaints before and I don't think they are all that valid or fair but we've gone over that several times already.
  11. Buxton's the wildcard. I think the Twins would pass on Zunino but if the Astros don't take Buxton, I'm not sure the Twins FO would be able to pass on his upside, even for Zimmer.
  12. That's not completely fair. Ownership has, esp in the past, put spending limits on the draft that should be taken into account. We've also cut payroll several times when circumstances dictated it but really only had one year where they stretched payroll. I'm really curious how much of a draft budget the Twins have this year.
  13. Honestly, that's a great point. I have no idea why we couldn't have 2 hitting coaches - although maybe the Pohlads balk at paying an extra coaches salary.
  14. I wouldn't be happy trading Span for two guys outside of their own team's top 10 prospects. I don't know enough about MiLB stats to say Rosenbaum is a good player but I note that he hasn't been better in the EL than Liam Hendriks, despite being a year older when he was in it. (I don't know why the Giants Surkamp isn't a top 100 prospect based on his numbers, either). But people that know more than me rate Rosenbaum outside his teams top 10, which means, at best, he probably profiles as a #5 starter or long reliever, which I don't trade Span for. And I don't want the centerpiece of a Span trade to be a relief pitcher. So I'd pass on that deal unless the Twins thought Detwiler has a huge ceiling that I don't know about.
  15. It's mostly cyclical. The Twins were a model franchise for a decade and the only small market team that was able to switch its nucleus and remain competitive. It had to end. One of the nice things (I say as I desperately look for a silver lining) is that the Twins didn't go bad slowly. Usually a playoff team misses the playoffs, plays slightly under .500, gets a bit worse, crashes. We skipped all those intermediate steps and went straight to the crash!
  16. Souhan offers 4 ideas in todays column: 1) Cut Marquis and (essentially) let Hendriks, Swarzak, Duensing compete for rotation spots. 2) Trade span for starting pitching 3) Reassign Vavra and bring up Bruno as hitting coach. Also suggests adding new coaches to bench, naming Molitor and Gladden. 4) Fire Gardy. What do you think? I'm ok with cutting Marquis and letting Hendriks (or others) get more ML experience although I doubt it would improve the club much in the short run. I've been advocating trading Span for starting pitching for awhile and I think Ryan will eventually do that. I don't think Bruno or firing Vavra is going to make any difference but, at this point, I don't know if it'll do any harm, either. I do think the Twins need a Spanish speaking coach, it's ridiculous that we don't have one, and Bobby Cueller as been pretty good pitching coach in AAA. If you don't want to get rid of Anderson, make him the bullpen coach. I think Gardy is a net positive for the club and don't want him fired.
  17. In the economy of baseball, he probably would've gotten more if he held out for FA. He would have been a free agent in the same offseason that saw Jayson Werth and Carl Crawford get their insane deals. He was younger than both, played catcher and had more success than both. Plus the Tigers, Yanks and Red Sox were all looking for catching help that offseason.
  18. Glad to have the Canuck back.
  19. It's not a bad idea to trade Doumit but at the same time I suspect ownership doesn't want another 99 loss team for financial reasons.
  20. Willingham right now. Catcher in the AL is a little tougher - Weiters should be the starter but Napoli, Mauer and Santana are all in the hunt for probably only one spot.
  21. The list of people who would be elated to be mentioned in the same breath as Santana does not start nor stop with Buscher. :-)
  22. I suspect they're fairly good at it, actually. Obviously, you'd have to look at all 30 teams (and minor league teams if you really wanted to research it) but the Twins have gotten something out of rule iv and v picks, waiver wire picks ups and minor league free agents. Guys like Santana, Guerrier, Reyes, Buscher, Breslow, Diamond, Mohr, Burton, Kielty and Tyner all fall into those categories and helped the ML squad.
  23. Let's give him a bit more time. If he ends up posting a 135-140 OPS+ again, I think he'll be worth it. Mauer does things that annoy me (it would be great if he'd turn on a 3-0 pitch once in a while) but I don't think he or his salary are real problems. Even if you think he's overpaid some, he's not overpaid by 23m.
