  1. Red Sox: 1.587 billion in payroll last 10 years Twins: 845 million in payroll last 10 years. Almost seems like a significant resource advantage should be considered, no? I mean, that extra 700m+ had to be worth at least one win.
  2. Good to see. Hopefully he gets to AAA sometime and learns to hit. His BB and K rates in the majors weren't horrible.
  3. Sure, people don't always like what's new. But that doesn't mean that everything that is new is good. ESPN changed their forums a few years ago and it was such a disaster no one came back and they eventually closed them down.
  4. Been about a week since SI.com changed their layout. Presumably for tablets or iphones or something. Anyway, I think its pretty bad but I usually check it from a laptop or desktop. What do others think?
  5. A few questions: 1) Were those signings the top signings of those years or the list made by BA? Maybe BA isn't as good at scouting international signees so their list might not be accurate enough to make a determination. 2) How many players, not on that list, made it? You pointed out that the Twins made a few nice signings in that period. How about other teams (yes, that's a lot of work). 3) Another way to review international signees may be to review BA top 100 prospect lists and find out, in whatever year, how many became top 100 guys.
  6. Good point.
  7. 1) Billy Beane commented in an article that (and I'm paraphrasing) teams would move away from valuing a player in isolation and rather start focusing on how a player A makes player B better. Is that something you and/or the Twins have been working on? I've always thought the Twins did something like that b/c, as bad as his 2010 season was, Nick Blackburn still managed to have a quality start in well over half his starts. (You can absolutely win a beer on that bit of trivia) And that had to dependent on his teammates. 2) How many in your department are into LARP? Gotta be at least half, right?
  8. I have a friend who is an international scout for the Royals who lives in Taiwan. He posted the original video from a Taiwanese source on facebook. I had no idea what was happening.
  9. May is on the DL so he can't come up. The Twins have been extremely aggressive with promotions when they warrant. They currently have the two youngest pitchers in A ball and the youngest in AA. Last year, Sano, Buxton, Rosario (among others) were promoted midseason.
  10. This was posted at minorleague ball as well. Sickel's two word response: "he'll adjust." Good to hear the scouting view of him was solid. Still like him as a prospect and it's good completely agree with Leviathan that he's learning this year.
  11. 5 innings, 5 er, 3bb, 3hits, 2 homers, 4ks. The concern with him has been that his stuff is too flat and good hitters will hit it over the wall.
  12. I wonder if they'd hire me if I had none of the qualifications but really wanted the job.
  13. Nice to see Hicks heating up. I hope he gets to AAA sometime this season.
  14. May: This month Meyer: I thought he'd be up this year but sounds like he won't. Super 2 deadline 2015 Berrios: Super 2 deadline 2016 Stewart: July 2018 Burdi: Opening day 2015 Sano: July 2015 Buxton: July 2015 Rosario: Sept 2015 Polanco: Opening day 2015 (we trade Dozier) Vargas: Sept 2014
  15. Bummer. I hadn't realized that Meyer wasn't on the 40 man roster. I guess it doesn't make sense to burn an option year if he's on an innings limit but I'd also like to see him in the majors ASAP. I agree that if he isn't getting a cup of coffee this year he probably starts next year in AAA until the super 2 deadline. I guess if I was in charge, he'd come up this year (along with May) but it's probably a good thing I'm not in charge.
  16. 6-0? http://screamer.deadspin.com/here-is-j-r-jim-ross-calling-the-brazil-germany-firs-1601968953/+bubbaprog I actually feel really bad for Brazil.
  17. Maybe, but it doesn't it mean it's correct. My guess is that a bunch of people on these boards think Gardy didn't like Slowey b/c he "hates smart people". A look at most of his rosters show that he has often played younger players - in key roles - than is believed. The fact that the team might give a spot to a vet out of ST instead of a young guy with options isn't surprising or that unusual. It happens all around baseball. If you end up needing 10 starters, you aren't going to be able to stash a vet in the minors.
  18. I find it hard to go from Ramon Ortiz got 10 starts = Gardy loves veteran pitchers. The reality of baseball rotations means that every season you're probably going to have 10 or more guys make a start. They had 8 players last year and 9 the year before that make at least 10 starts each season. So to get that depth there is always going to be some old vet to be got for a million or two. But when 70% of your starts are coming from 27 and younger home grown pitchers, it's tough to say that Gardy is giving starts to old vets.
  19. Keep in mind that Twins daily was also created by merging several Twins blogs, several of which dealt with the minor leagues exclusively. A lot of the people that came here (at least me) came because Seth's minor league blog was assimilated here. I think a lot of the visitors to this site also want to discuss the minor leagues more than the average fan and a lot of initial fan created articles probably cover minor league stuff. There's lots of places to go to get coverage of the Twins but only a handful of places where you can discuss Berrios and Stewart, for example.
  20. I agree that, in many ways, Shields seems like a Twins-type pitcher. Sorta like Pavano did. Durable, lots of innings, no BS type. But I don't think the Twins will win any bidding on him. And I was mistaken, he'll be 33 next year so someone will give him a few too many years.
  21. This meme is really getting ridiculous. Gardy has had a bunch of young rotations and plays lots of young players in key situations. Cripes, down the stretch in 06, he was relying on Boof and Mijares probably more than he was on anyone else. He gave Baker 48 starts thru his age 25 season, Slowey got 54. Lohse 114. In 08, 139 starts were by players 26 and under. In 09, 150 by players 27 and under. And, except for the 32 starts he gave Panano in 10, every start was by someone 28 and under. He plays the guys the FO gives him.
  22. Well, he'll be 34 so he won't get that many years but he'll get too many. Not a great class of FA pitchers next year. Billingsly, Lester, Masterson, Scherzer ... meh. Brett Anderson would be interesting depending on his health, which is always a problem.
  23. Same reason every one wants the back up quarter back promoted.
