  1. They were both ridiculous ideas.
  2. If I have to care who ends up with the money - owners or players - I'll always side with the players. Owners are given everything. **** em.
  3. The Twins should also sign Machado next year on a one year make good deal.
  4. Keep in mind, next season will include Harper, Machado, Kershaw, Blackmon, Donaldson, Andrew Miller, David Price has an opt out, Gio Gonzalez ... It's an insane class and one of the reasons owners are trying to keep prices low this offseason. There's a pretty good argument that Dozier won't be a top 10 free agent next year. So he could take the Twins one year offer and wait another year.
  5. I think with the collusion by owners this offseason that Dozier is more likely to accept a qualifying offer next offseason than go through free agency.
  6. It's good for North Korea. They get to argue that their weapons brought a US President to the negotiating table. They've been trying to talk to US Presidents for decades but all of them - dem and GOP - had refused. Until now.
  7. In case you were wondering what it looks like when immigration takes a family
  8. Fangraphs has an article on Buxton's base running - https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/byron-buxton-just-missed-a-perfect-season/
  9. Teams are already getting insane front end deals on those guys. The answer you seem to want is to have all players have free agency much earlier. There shouldn't be a draft cap. Why should the #1 pick get paid so much less than his value? I don't think complaints about fairness and salaries like Mauer are all that useful/realistic when we ignore the system made Mauer incredibly underpaid while he was racking up MVPs and batting titles.
  10. Yeah, this tanking trend to maximize profits like the Marlins and Astros have done in recent years is not good for the sport. It hurts basketball, it'll hurt baseball. Not sure what MLB should do about it but they should do something.
  11. I'm surprised Grossman was that fast. And Granite's pretty fast, too.
  12. Barring a few injuries, I don't think he can. Berrios, Ordoizzi (man, I'm gonna have to learn to spell that name), Gibson, Mejia, Sanchez, Hughes, Gonsalves and Slegers are probably in front of him on the current depth chart.
  13. First of all, these guys didn't win the lottery. They worked incredibly hard to get where they are. Their future success isn't contingent on luck but their own hard work. They should bet on themselves. Yes, some players have signed extensions that buy out a few free agency years. But those aren't usually guys who would hit FA in their prime, like Buxton will. Plenty of players have turned down team friendly deals or refused to give away free agency years. Buxton has already made over 7m, counting his bonus. He'll make more than 500k this year regardless. He probably has some endorsements of modest amount. Hopefully, he's smart about his money. He doesn't need to give up those free agency years. The Twins should be very aggressive and try and lock him up for a decade or more. Tell him now that he's the face of the franchise for the foreseeable future. I think offers that only try to buy out 2-3 free agency years won't get it done for a number of reasons.
  14. I think he's more or less a lost cause. I don't think he can be away from pitching for years and just get it. He's 23 this year and he's thrown less than 30 innings in A ball. And he wasn't exactly dominating A ball in that short sample.
  15. I'm not sure Harper won't get 400m from the Yankees or the Red Sox. Trout's contract has him making about 34m/year so that's the minimum right there. Harper will be 26 next year. He wouldn't be nuts for asking for a 10 year deal. Stanton got a 13yr/325m deal that included some arb years. Machado won't be far behind.
  16. Depends on what we're trying to do. Are we only locking him up through his arb years? Or are we trying to buy out some FA years? Machado and Harper are going to blow up payrolls after this season. Machedo made 16m in his last arb year. Josh Donaldson made 23m. Kevin Keirmeyer (sp) signed a longterm deal with the Rays that paid him 5, 8m and 10m for his final three arb years and then three FA years at roughly 12m each year (Buxton would be insane to take that offer). I don't think Buxton or his agent are going to give the Twins several cheap FA years. Maybe one. So if both sides just want to protect his next four years, sorta like Dozier, they could come to some sort of agreement that pays Buxton 30m or so and let him walk as a FA at 28. But I don't know how Buxton or his agent pass up free agency at 28 unless the Twins give him an incredible longterm deal and not just through his age 30 season.
  17. I think if the Twins ever want to lock him up cheap, they have to do it now. If he has the year I think he'll have (all-star, GG winner, top 10 MVP votes) his extension is going to be huge.
  18. I'm not too worried about Sano's bat. It looks like the FO is willing to let him play third base for the majority of the season so they signed Morrison.
  19. Yep, the Giant's also had some solid pitchers but never one worth more than 4.5 WAR in their WS seasons. If Ervin wasn't an ace last year (top 10 in ERA+, IP, WHIP, WAR, era) than those guys weren't aces either. Jon Lester has had some up and down years where he sometimes pitches like an ace and sometimes not. His 2013 season was a down year as well.
  20. Depends on what an ace is but they have a strong offense. They can win without one.
  21. Yep. My guess is they give him a few April starts and, if that doesn't work, he goes to the DL. I think he should go to the pen but I don't think he will.
  22. A team can win the World Series without a true ace. Many have.
  23. I don't think that adding ten or so is that unusual. You'll lose a few guys on a top 30 to graduations, trades, rule v, DFAs etc and you'll also add a bunch with your draft picks and international signings every year. I don't know what are top 30 looked like last year before the draft (mlbpipeline's 2017 includes all our drafted guys) but a net change of a third or so doesn't strike me as too unusual. In any event, I think there's been a lot of discussion about the system and a lot of reasons for optimism from the experts.
  24. Pipeline compares him to Torii Hunter. Good power, strong arm. Raw. He's pretty young, will turn 18 in a few days.
