  1. Gosh, I love this stuff. Nolan Arenado charged the mound pretty hard after getting hit by the pitch. The pitcher wanted no part of him but there were some funny glove throws. https://deadspin.com/the-rockies-and-padres-had-themselves-a-scuffle-1825187522 Yankees Red Sox brawl was the more traditional type where not much actually happened but a lot of players milling about. https://deadspin.com/red-sox-yankees-put-on-a-brawl-1825196345 And here is Jason Turbow's excellent write up on why the Yankee/Red Sox brawl happened. https://thebaseballcodes.com/2018/04/12/fists-fly-in-boston-after-austin-powers-toward-the-mound/
  2. Well, it is still very hard. I doubt Morrison and most LH sluggers have practiced bunting in a game in years, if ever. Rosario bunted against the shift but he's a fast dude so I'm sure he's laid down a bunt or two in the minors to see if he could do it. Mauer would occasionally drop a bunt to keep the opponents honest. But holding the bat and trying to get the ball to roll toward third base (esp when the pitcher is probably throwing hard inside) isn't just something you do overnight. I wish some of these guys would work on it in the off-season but most probably don't. IIRC, I think Thome or Dunn once tried to bunt against the shift and ended up having the pitch hit their thumb and knocking him out of the game.
  3. As another side note, not sure if this is the right place for it but it seems like it goes with this. SI has an extra mustard thing that's fairly popular in part because it included a lovely lade of the day, often a cheerleader. The new guy said he's stopping that and has received lots of angry comments for it. He labeled that section "The Elephant in the Room". https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2018/04/11/wednesday-hot-clicks-tristan-thompson-khloe-kardashian-nhl-playoffs
  4. A decade or so ago when I lived in Philly there was an article about how much revenue the Eagles Cheerleaders brought in for the team. This was right around the time the cheerleaders started wearing really skimpy clothing and got national notice - ESPN talked about them non-stop all season. Their calendar outsold the Cowboy's calendars. I don't remember how much money they brought in but it was a lot. The team got money from the calendar, modeling gigs, you could hire them for parties, etc. And they didn't have to pay the cheerleaders much at all. And you saw other teams follow that trend in the early 2000s. If you're old enough to remember Gregg Easterbrook writing for ESPN, you'd remember how much he talked up the change in cheerleader attire (and he talked about the Vikings cheer squad as well). So my guess is that teams make a lot of money from cheerleaders with very little cost to them, that the skimpier outfits have been part of the gig for all teams for a decade plus and the teams probably think that has a lot to do with the revenue stream so are unlikely to change anything. But, as you said, the costumes aren't really the problem. My guess is that litigation on a variety of issues involving pay, work categorization, sexual harassment, age discrimination, etc will pop up even more in the next decade and probably significantly change cheer leading.
  5. It is too early to worry - he has a track record, after all. But I do wish some of our lefties would bunt against a shift. I know Rosario has done that at least once. But when they're giving you the entire left side of the infield ...
  6. https://www.thedailybeast.com/fbi-raid-on-michael-cohen-is-the-most-dangerous-day-of-donald-trumps-life?source=twitter&via=desktop And this article was written by a republican!
  7. I don't think they've ever even played in the WS
  8. Well, sure. Injuries can happen but the Twins have put a pretty big investment into Kepler so I think it's unlikely that they let him wash out this year, so he'll make arbitration. And realistically, it's probably not a great idea for a player to sign contracts on the basis that he might wash out. Kepler's got a lot of money. He's pretty much promised a lot more without committing longterm to the Twins. He has enough of a track record where it's not likely he'll wash out. Worst case, he's the better half of a platoon with good defense and base running. He'll be a free agent after his age 29 season. I wouldn't give those seasons up yet, at least not until I see how next years market is determined.
  9. Well, I agree that he probably can't help anymore the team should probably make sure. Letting him get some minor league starts to rehab his arm, maybe putting him in the pen are both reasonable options. 12m is a lot of money and I'm sure most owners don't want their GMs telling them to dump salary. It's pretty rare, even the Yankees have seldom done it.
  10. Well, he's made about a million after this year and he's super two so he'll get four years of arbitration awards. So, conservatively, without committing to the Twins, he'll make 2, 5, 8, 10 in those four years. So he'll have 25m or so regardless and be a free agent for his age 30 season. If he's a solid starter at that point in his career, he could certainly hope to make another 75m in the next six years without committing now. Taking that deal now would mean he'd take 12.5m/yr for the last six years of his contract. I think he'd pass. But honestly, maybe they aren't that far away at that point. It's a big gamble for the team too.
  11. I do hope that Bechtold gets moved fairly quickly. He's 22 and has some college experience. I'd be thrilled if he could make it to AA this year, even for a cup of coffee.
  12. Fangraphs' guy on some college players who will go in the first two rounds. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/far-too-many-scouting-notes-on-college-draft-prospects/ Florida 3B India looks like a guy who could get nabbed at 20.
  13. We'll see. The stupidity of a trade war is mind boggling to me. That and I hold a lot of Wells Fargo (already in trouble) has meant my portfolio has been in free fall. Ugh. Fortunately, I don't need the money right now but ...
  14. Great to see minor league baseball back! Only one game so not a lot to note but it's good to see Baddoo and Bechtold taking a lot of pitches/walks again. I really hope they both become on-base machines for us.
  15. Out of curiosity, why should we change the word? Are we going to say that racism has to equal skinhead behavior? That's certainly what some people want. Christ, I've heard/read hundreds of comments like "the Nazis are the real racists" or "I'm not racist, I voted for Obama." If society has trained you to act one way when three black teenagers walk toward you on a sidewalk as opposed to how you'd react to three white teenagers walked toward you, shouldn't we label that behavior racist? (The "you" being the universal "you" and not ThejacKmp). It seems like you're suggesting that we don't use that term because it makes some people uncomfortable. And those people are probably white people. I don't think we should change the language of racism to make white people feel better, regardless of whether it makes them more likely to listen now. If we're doing that, we're already telling them that certain racist behavior isn't racist. That doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
  16. Well, Buxton has already made something like 6.6m and that's not counting his endorsement deals with Under Armor and Rawlings. Now obviously taxes and agent fees took out a good chunk of that but hopefully he and his family are safe with money. So Buxton will make just under 600k this year and next year he'll see his first arb raise which will give him seven figures. So he doesn't really have a reason to sign away free agent years unless the Twins are giving him a really solid deal. Same with the others.
  17. Sorry. I try to keep the positive around here.
  18. Maybe I should use a different example. On TwinkieTown a couple months ago, some idiot said something about Sano's weight because he was eating too much fried chicken. Horrendously bad thing to say. People called the guy out on it. Now, from there is seems there are two possible options. One, you could look at what you said and read the concerns that others had and say, "holy crap, that's on me. I messed up." Or you could get defensive and attack everyone else, pretend you didn't know fried chicken had any connotation, etc. Guess which one this idiot picked. The point is, we're at a place where people are openly offended at the mere suggestion that they reexamine why they say certain things. This thread questioned why we are ragging on Rosario for not hustling on a pop up. I wondered if we'd have used the same thread title if it wasn't Rosario. (I'm fairly confident we wouldn't have). At that point, maybe someone should say "let's see why did I do that?" And, as Tom answered, he explained why he did that. Tom doesn't seem upset and no one has called him a racist. Tom thought about the issue, considered why he did it and explained it. That should be good for this. What Tom didn't do was attack the people who brought up the questions or showed fake outrage that someone dare question him. That, to me, seems like a good way to move on this.
  19. Barring a major injury, they all have lifetime security already. Kepler will be a super two so he'll get to arbitration a year early. So even without a contract and even if he's just a 95 OPS+ guy going forward, he'll make several million. And as we saw last year, guys in arbitration can win over 20m in their last year. So I don't think it's wrong for any of these guys to see how Harper and Machado reset the market before making longterm plans.
