  1. Even if we accept the figures in the handbook, why shouldn't they spend the money in 2018 that they didn't spend in 2017, and 2016? They just get to bank that, without anyone questioning it? They can spend whatever they chose to spend. And they could certainly add $30m in 18 and not lose money, particularly if you average over the past several years.
  2. They would view themSELVES as having failed. The point isn't to be the win per dollar spent champ, he third wins champ, the TeamWithTheMostWAR. The WeAlmostWonTeam. The point is to win the WS.
  3. Actually, plenty of people say exactly that. They just couch it in terms like "can't afford to sign the best free agents," "don't trade away prospects," and "our deep minor league system will supply what we need." "That's what Falvine where hired for, to turn magic beans onto ace starters, like Cleveland!" If those are your positions, you're saying "just find the next Arrieta." For proof, I offer the "hunt for an ace" thread.
  4. I would probably try to lock up Berrios, but there's compelling reasons not to, as well. Tough call, IMO.
  5. Or even Chatwood in addition to a legitimate top of the rotation starter. But as the centerpiece of a rotation fix? Fail.
  6. Concur. I do not agree with the OP's position that A-list FA pitchers are "a pipe dream" for the Twins. And to me, the risk associated with signing mid tier FAs is greater than the risk associated with signing top-of-the-line FAs. A Darvish might get hurt, but he will help the team win if he doesn't. A Chatwood might get hurt, and he also might not help the team win if he doesn't.
  7. The clock is ticking on signing Buxton. Get it done, this winter. Like Jim, I suspect it'll be for a higher AAV than this proposal.
  8. They also now get all advertising and suite revenue, which they didn't get in the dome. Seems like, at worse, a wash. The Florida facilities upgrade cost the Twins $13.8m (part of which is increased rent payments). http://m.mlb.com/news/article/40185098// The Dominican upgrade cost them $9m. https://puckettspond.com/2017/01/20/minnesota-twins-open-baseball-academy-dominican-republic/ Try again. With that, I'm going to suggest we take this elsewhere.
  9. As to the topic, I still don't think it's wise to extend a Dozier. Regardless my position on salary.
  10. Do you believe the Twins, over history, have been aggressive with payroll? Or cautious to the point of favoring money over success? It's not a dumb complaint depending on your answer to the above. It's hard to know exact figures, but I know this...the team was purchased for $44M and is now worth something approaching 20 times that amount. SOMEbody thinks the Twins are printing money. I'd also like to know why the Twins needed ~$70M to pay for everything over and above major league payroll in the dome, but immediately needed ~$110M the day they moved into TF. Nobody has ever offered an explanation that doesn't include "they're not actually putting a penny of their own money into TF."
  11. Available replacements play a role.
  12. I like me some Doz, but I think you gotta let him walk after '18.
  13. Among other things, both Buxton and Mauer had significantly less playing time than Dozier.
  14. And fWAR for pitchers is...even worse than for hitters.
  15. I fear it might already be too late to get a decent discount. The incentives for Buxton to sign such a deal are melting away. His chances of not having an MLB career at this point are down to injury risk.
  16. Right, but we shouldn't hold his youth against him.
  17. Buxton for sure. For as many years as he'll agree to. Sano is a tougher call, but I probably make an offer. I am leery about what security might do to motivation. Rosario, I just let it ride at least another year. Sign Berrios too.
  18. Play hard. As hard as you can. To do less doesn't make you immune from injury, and is an insult to the game.
  19. We get your point, but that's not MLB. As for Molitor, I hope he's better than I think he is. Which is entirely possible.
  20. Sung to the tune of George Of The Jungle, I presume
  21. I still think PJ is a good hire and will be the best Gopher coach since Warmath. He inherited a team that didn't recruit well enough the last couple years. Particularly at skill positions. Let's give him more than two B10 games.
