  1. Nitpic: If Josh Donaldson is "entering his age 34 season (and he is,) and signs for 4 years, he'll be 37 "when his contract is up," not 38.
  2. Please explain. Donaldson, 2015: 158 games, .939 OPS 2016: 155 games, .953 OPS 2017: 113 games, .944 OPS 2018: 52 games, .801 OPS 2019: 155 games. .900 OPS He got hurt, and it tanked 2018. It happened, sure, but he's been an extremely durable player outside of that. There's zero reason--based on his history--to think you'd get only 2 of 4 productive seasons, "if that." Also, let us know what "impactful" move you'd rather they make with that $110. Take on David Price's contract, which Boston will give you for nothing in return?
  3. Worst case scenario is this is Falvine's plan for adding "impact pitching." Which appears to be the case.
  4. I think at this point, you make a final push to get Donaldson under contract. He fits pretty well. Improves the infield defense, adds a middle of the order bat. I'd try really hard to get it done. The money is there. If it takes 4/$110, do it. If, on the other hand, he says no, then I try to add a LH bullpen piece, and call it an offseason. I hope I survive the first half with 40 percent of a rotation, and see what's available at the deadline. It will still be expensive, but there may be more options. They blew the offseason, just tuck your tail between your legs, admit it, and hope for the best.
  5. so why were you scolding those of us who were so disappointed when all the FA starter possibilities went elsewhere? It's like we could anticipate the predicament the Twins now find themselves in. Trying to complete a difficult trade, if you can even find one, and giving the other team all the leverage. Or taking on similar salary to signing a free agent, only for a worse pitcher who the other team wants to dump. One more time: there is no path to recovery this offseason. Its blown.
  6. 100 OPS+. Not really all that "improved."
  7. I know. I spoke Korean for a living in the Air Force. Lived 60 miles south of Seoul for two years. I can guarantee you he doesn't identify with other "Asians." Ask a Korean how he feels about the Japanese occupation of Korea, for example. And per this report, there were 21000 Koreans in MN as of 2014: https://www.tcdailyplanet.net/community-health-overview-korean-americans/ You're just rationalizing. Finding excuses for why the Twin can't sign any free agents of note. That's your right, of course, but I'm going to point out the holes in your excuses. That's my right. And in this case, I'm willing to wager I know a great deal more about Korea, and Koreans, than you.
  8. Food for Thought... Over the last decade, the top 10 spenders in free agency handed out 8.347 billion dollars and have a total of 3 World Series titles to show for it. That's one title for every 2.782 billion dollars spent. Houston won once and only spent 329 million over the entire decade. Big spending (IMHO) does not appear to be the roadmap to World Series titles. How many WS have the Twins produced? For that matter, how many post-season wins have the Twins produced?
  9. what does "a lot of Asians in Toronto" have to do with anything? And for the record, Ryu is Korean. Not "Asian." But I doubt that had much if anything to do with him signing with Toronto.
  10. the pizza won't taste as good in 4 years, so you were right to stick to your guns and refuse to pay for good pizza, when a frozen cardboard box with a little cheese scattered across the top is all that Minnesotans deserve anyway. Besides, that real pizza probably wouldn't have went home with you anyway...it has free will, y'know.
  11. "...Gray would cost a bit more..." You're miles short on both trades.
  12. I dont think moving Arraez to 3rd fixes anything. In fact, given his arm, I'm pretty sure Arraez would be a worse third baseman than Sano. So you've made SS possibly better, but 1st and 3rd worse.
  13. Chapman isnt even arb eligible yet. Oakland isnt trading him.
  14. the STrib article SAYS they didn't "appear willing to move off their original offer," which the article also says was "in excess of $20m per year" for 4 years. So they werent actually serious bidders, if the reporting is true.
  15. the Twins just recently went through a 6 yr period with 99, 96, 96, 92, 79, and 103 losses WITHOUT a WS run. The back to back WS appearances by KC are not because they "sold the farm" or traded away their future. Nor is their current situation a result of that. This "look at KC" rationale is groundless.
  16. way more than half of TD predictors had the Twins in contention last March. I'm pretty confident the FO wasnt surprised to contend either. Nobody saw 101, but plenty had them as 90-ish.
  17. The offseason was a failure when Ryu went off the board. There is no path to recovery.
  18. Y'know, now that I think about it, they never said the pitching they were looking for would have a POSITIVE impact.
  19. so how do they acquire on "that side of the ball"? And how do they justify using trade assets instead of money, if they can find a trade partner? The team has clear needs. They haven't addressed them, IMO, and I doubt they can.
  20. by their own parameters, they failed. They need impact pitching, they stated they would pursue it, impact pitching was available, and they didn't get any for nothing but money. Money that was available. They can perhaps trade for pitching, but impact pitching will be difficult to get, and extremely costly to their other stated goal of "sustained contention." So yes. They needed to get one or more of the larger than normal group of FA impact pitchers. It's a failed offseason, by definition. Adding Donaldson would be a great move, and I hope they do, but it won't mean the offseason wasnt a failure. Just less so.
  21. Concur on paragraphs 1 and 2. But IMO even signing Donaldson, or trading for a starter cant rescue this off season. Better, for sure, but they've already failed.
