  1. It's a start. Particularly the part about taking infield.
  2. I agree defensive stats are pretty doubtful. However, that's completely unrelated to whether saving a run is more valuable, or less valuable than scoring a run. If either. It's just harder to measure defense. If we believe Bill James old pythagorean theorem for baseball, saving a run is worth slightly more. (Rs scored)² / (Rs scored)² + (Rs allowed)² Take a team that scores 800 runs and gives up 800 runs. That team should be .500, according to the theorem. Give them 900 runs scored and the same 800 runs allowed. They should win at a .558 pace. But give them the same 800 runs scored but 700 allowed, they should win at a .566 pace. So at least according to Bill James, saving runs is worth slightly more than scoring runs.
  3. ? Based on what? It's hard to measure defense, but I don't think the value of a run saved is less. The only research I've seen about the value of runs is intuitive....a run is more valuable in a low scoring environment than a high scoring one. That'd tend to make me think a run saved might actually be worth MORE than a run scored. I'd also posit the range of skill is narrower for defense than offense, so it's harder to actually BE a run better than another player on defense.
  4. "What happens if you dont follow the strategy?" seems like an important control, too. Lest you conclude it's safe to stick your tongue on the metal pole because you only looked at those who did so in July
  5. I concur that Bader will be fine as a 4th OFer this year, but he damn well better not get 100+ games and 400 ABs. That's Buxton numbers.
  6. I didn't read Baldelli's comments as referring to spring training. I read them as "this is our every day first baseman." I'd wager a tidy sum France starts the season as such.
  7. Yeah, preach it Rocco. Now a guy like Wallner...the guy with the .866 career OPS. .894 last year. Now THAT’S the kind of hitter you wanna get out of the lineup as often as you can, eh Roc? Sigh.
  8. France will likely not take many PAs from either. Maybe a few at DH. France is here to play 1B. And he's here to play 1B because this FO hasn't developed one. Despite going heavy for bats early in draft after draft. And doesn't have one coming either.
  9. At least if he's playing LF it's probably for Larnach instead of Wallner.
  10. All of this is not a Bader problem. It's a Rocco problem. Or perhaps, if I'm feeling generous, a Rocco/Front Office problem.
  11. The money spent on Bader, Coulombe and France is well short of Alonso, too. Well short. And that ignores the liklihood that Alonso wouldn't have signed with the Twins for similar money. The Tigers offered Bregman a six year deal. He turned it down. Your theory is a good one, and I wish the Twins pursued top end free agents. But they can't do it by just "not signing little guys." The money doesn't add up.
  12. That's $75k over about 37 months. I doubt there was any actual "debt." He lost about $25k per year. An MLB ump pay starts at $120k. I'm sure losing $25k/yr was a little painful, but not enough so he couldn't pay. And these bets were at established sports books anyway where you're wagering with cash on account. The book already had the cash before he lost it You don't call the MGM book and say "hey, front me $1000 on the Lakers." None of which is to excuse his behavior in any way. But he wasn't in a position to be financially "Leveraged."
  13. Keirsey isn't really "young." He'll turn 28 in May. I don't think he's been considered a "true CF" by many, either.
  14. "Anybody can play anywhere." They don't ask players to learn a position in the minors. They groom everyone to be glorified utility players. And that's what they get.
  15. You keep saying this, why aren't you demanding a new front office? One that develops.
  16. Don't forget to add playing time for the backup CFer for days when Buxton ISN'T injured, but Rocco gives him time off anyway. Add...25-30 games.
  17. Honestly, the lengths some people will travel to make excuses for Baldelli is nauseating. The front office isn't pinch hitting Manny Margot for the team's best hitter in the 6th inning. That's 100 percent the manager. One hundred percent. Not to mention Nelson's OP claims the front office has had to assemble a roster designed to PREVENT their manager from managing. Which, for the record doesn't seem likely. Rocco's gonna Rocco. I guarantee you'll see Bader PHing for Wallner and/or Larnach. Early.
  18. I'm reasonably confident these types of incentives aren't allowed. Durability, or awards, ok. Performance, not ok.
