Read Zulgad's article: http://www.1500espn.com/twins-2/2015/12/zulgad-twins-should-keep-plouffe-consider-park-a-prospect-until-he-proves-he-can-hit/ "That gets us to the primary point of this column. Unless the Twins can get a windfall for Plouffe, and that isn’t going to happen, Ryan needs to stick to his commitment that he doesn’t trade the third baseman."
-
Ah, The Hot Stove League. Gotta love it! I agree with Seth: Rosario should stay in LF. My belief is if Buxton does something miraculous in spring training, he maybe get's the MLB call. I would rather see him get a bit more development time on working the counts, pitch recognition, etc. On the current 40 man roster, is there anyone besides Rosario and D. Santana for CF? And I agree with Zulgad: unless the Twins are offered a real windfall for Plouffe, Plouffe stays at 3B. Here's hoping what we're hearing about Sano's winter is true. If Sano comes to ST in great shape, all this can be blessedly moot.

Article: Twins Winter Meetings Preview
HitInAPinch replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If I'm running the joint, I'd go all in at this point. Improving the offense without improving the pitching doesn't make sense to me. The bullpen seems the most wide open. How much could both Tony Sipp or Antonio Bastardo cost?- 32 replies

Article: Tendering Casey Fien: Pros And Cons

I wouldn't get myself in too much of a twist if Fien is back. I'd just like to see new faces in the pen next year. -

Article: The State Of The Lefty Reliever Market
HitInAPinch replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With the additions of Murphy and Park, I'm starting to take Terry Ryan seriously on his desire to improve the Twins for a run next year. I would like to see him make serious runs at both Sipp and Bastardo. I've never been all that high on the LOOGY thing. That's like a half a pitcher to me. Sipp's career stats vs. left and right hitters is pretty impressive. And how can you pass on a guy who's last name is Bastardo? The Twins have right-hand relief prospects [including Berrios and Meyer]. Time to take a hard look at them. -
Article: Twins Have Deal With Byung Ho Park
HitInAPinch replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
At first look, 4 years at $3mil per year looked like the Twins were getting Park pretty cheap. When you add in the $12.8mil posting fee, it's $6.2125 per year for Park. Assuming that the K's are not likely to go down, I'd be happy with a .265 BA and 25HR's. But, boy, the reality of Sano playing in RF just came a pretty big step closer. TR is still standing by his "we're adding, not subtracting" line. -
Park is now in town and the line I'm reading the most is both sides expect a contract to be signed, soon. Also read on MLB Rumors, a Boston Herald writer predicts numbers like the 2015 version of Mitch Moreland. I'd take that for a first season. Sounds like Ryan is still set on the same course. From this mornings Strib: "Ryan said the Twins prefer to keep current first baseman Joe Mauer and third baseman Trevor Plouffe in those spots, but that Miguel Sano, who launched 18 home runs in half a season as the Twins’ DH, will move to the outfield to accommodate the newcomer." There are some stories out there that Sano is hurt. There are others that say his recall to MN was just a standard health eval.

Aren't the Twins doing something similar to this right now [in a very small sense] ? Otherwise, running Perkins out there in the 9th as often as they did in the 1st half last year doesn't make much sense to me. Maximizing what they have for starters by minimizing their exposure makes a lot of sense to me.

I have been somewhat vocal about keeping May in the starting rotation. But, if Terry Ryan is dedicated to this path, May in the bullpen makes a lot of sense. I can't really see anything other than a dump of some of those middle of the road [and below] starters would really change my mind. And I just can't believe Terry would do that. Molitor, like Gardenhire before him, needs to stop running Perkins out at the end of games just to pickup cheap saves. I'm interested in hearing what Molitor thinks about a bullpen-by-committee idea. I think Perkins and Jepsen are a good start. Am REALLY hoping a couple of those high-powered MiLB arms step up.

Article: Get To Know: LHP Corey Williams
HitInAPinch replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Any thoughts on management's side of turning him into a starter? -
Sano has the ability to out hit his fielding issues where ever he plays. I whole heartily agree with the author on Plouffe: you don't trade away a proven veteran for a maybe at the position. Let it work out on the field. "Twins are hoping Byron Buxton claims center field right out of spring training." After leaving Buxton on the bench most of his time in the MLB late last year, I find that statement hard to believe. If both Arcia and Sano find they're way in to the OF, then the Twins will need a guy who can run like hell between them, offensive stats be damned. Pitching: we should all get over it: NO highly prized pitcher will end up with the Twins. Not unless Terry gets them REALLY drunk during negotiations and hogties their agents. Starting Pitching: at some point, Terry will need to subtract to add. Don't know if I see that happening. Intrigued by the Fister idea. If Nolasco can't do something for the bullpen, what's the point in trying to trade him? Fish or cut bait. Trevor May, Alex Meyer, Tommy Milone and Jose Berrios in the bullpen? IDK. Some, maybe. Certainly not all. You need people with some experience in the bullpen before any of these guys would be ready for some wear and tear.

Great article! Nice to read positive again! I love watching Rosario play. Just a little better control of the strikezone.... If not for the self-manufactured rotation mess, there would be no doubt May would be a starter. Sano seems as cool as they come. This off-season he's working on getting in better shape [from a reported 270lbs], which is key for next year. It's a very short sample size, but which pitcher was key down the stretch? Duffey. See my May comment. Escobar was a revelation last year. He is a proven SS. Berrios: it's time. See comments on May and Duffey.

Agree. I fined it weird how people criticize some players after they've had successful season and give players like Arcia a pass after being demoted to the minors and generally stinking up the joint.

"Hicks trade opens up center field for Buxton". I keep reading this everywhere. Utter twaddle says I. He's got a lot to learn at the plate. Bring him up now? Pray for Gary Pettis-type numbers. Hicks was traded for a need at catcher. Or maybe to open up CF for D. Santana? LOL! Arcia, Vargas and Pinto on the bench: Altogether or separately, those aren't good bench players. Solid defense and good-eye, contact hitters they ain't. Plouffe won't be traded, Sano will be in RF, Rosario will be in LF and will hit even better than last year, Mauer will be the starter at 1st.

Article: Did The Twins Give Up On Hicks Too Soon?
HitInAPinch replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Amen...... -
I'm with Terry Ryan, who [basically] said "Good hitters hit righties and lefties." I can't stand even the thought of rotating players. In my book, that's a half a player. The thing that intrigues me about JR Murphy is his bat. In 172 PA's, he hit .277, which followed a .284 in 85 PA's. Pretty good stuff for a part time player. Combined, Chris Herrmann and Eric Fryer over .100 points less than that. I get that defense is prized at catcher, but there's no reason to be satisfied with a black hole offensively. I like Hicks a lot, I think we could have seen a lot more from him this year. I think Murphy was a need trade and the Twins did pretty good.

Relief Pitchers are a tough call. More of a gamble, really. One really good year and they cash in. I'd be interested in Darren O'Day. 33 yrs. old, yes. But after 4 amazing years. The Baltimore Sun speculates O'Day could get a contract like Luke Gregerson got: three years and $18.5 million. As a side-armer, could he perform at a high level for those 3 years? More than anything, I'd like to see a bunch of those hard-throwing MiLBers breakthrough and take the job.
