  1. Buxton started 15 games this season before being sent to AAA. Berrios started 4, Meyer 1. No one is denying they were a bad 15, 4 or 1 games. The question is, why weren't they given more time, since the replacement options are just as bad or even worse Edit* He actually only started 12 games (1 of these I have listed as a start he came off the bench in the 1st inning, can't remember which game it was) Game Log Started 4 Games Sat 1 Started 3 Sat 3 Started 3 Sat 1 Started 2 Sat 1 Started 1 Yup - he SURE got plenty of chances this season to get in a rhythm and learn to hit ML pitching
  2. Francisco Lindor had a 67 wRC+ and a .246/.280/.331 line through his 1st month in the Bigs. Sure, Buxton struck out wayyy too often, but I would say its fair to ask, why were the Indians willing to let Lindor learn on the job, while the Twins don't have any interest in that (Buxton, Berrios, Meyer, etc.). Just a guess, but the Indians probably knew they didn't have better internal options (Pretty clear the Twins don't as well, for the 3 prospects listed above), and knew Lindor would figure it out because he's a super talented kid, who might learn from his ML manager, hitting coach, etc more than he would in AAA.
  3. You think the Twins are going to pay Mauer > $60 million to not play for them? Okkkkk You think they are going to release Hughes before the extension they signed him too even BEGINS? I would not hold your breath (nor should they do either of those moves)
  4. Byron Buxton (who was rushed to the majors and clearly looked not ready) has a higher Major League OPS than Danny Santana since the start of 2015. You think Danny Santana is better defensively in CF than Buxton? We must be watching different games...
  5. Arrieta had started something like 100 less games when the Cubs dealt for him than Hughes had at the point of this extension... What's the saying, "walks like a duck, quacks like a duck... it just might be a duck"... 160+ MLB starts, only one season of which were above avg...
  6. You don't see a difference in a player that has been mediocre to bad for 8 years vs one that has been mediocre to bad for 3? I'm sorry, I had to stop reading this reply when you compared him to Arrieta.
  7. He had just finished his 8th Major League season, and 1st above avg one as a starter. And had TWO years left on his deal. There's nothing hindsight about it, the context was clear at the time, and now. They paid for the 2014 season (EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS TWO YEARS LEFT), while ignoring 2007-2013
  8. His contract extension was $42 million and 3 years. It's a bit disingenuous to call it under $12 million / year. The 1st contract was good. The extension was potentially the worst decision (of many) that Terry Ryan has made in 5 years
  9. If he's going to pitch through it, it kind of has to be in the bullpen. I mean without those rockets being hit at people, or some great defensive plays, where does his 75 pitches take him? Maybe into the 5th? 5, 2, 4 the number of innings he's given them the previous 3 starts. I don't see how letting him continue to start games helps them in the short, or long term. And apparently the manager still has playoff aspirations, yet is starting someone who can't exceed 75 pitchers (and frankly hasn't been any bit effective with those 75 before last night)
  10. If the plan was to build the farm system up why didn't they actually try to do that, instead of just having the "good fortune" of picking in the top 6 numerous times. IE; trading Perkins, Willingham, Suzuki, etc. Top prospects they currently have; Sano / Kepler / Polanco all in the system before your 5 year window Buxton, Jay, Gordon, Stewart top 6 picks Berrios / Burdi - high 2nd round picks Frankly I don't see one shred of evidence to suggest this was their "plan". If it was, they would have traded veterans for prospects, not given up a draft pick to sign Ervin Santana, paid Ricky Nolasco, etc.
  11. I didn't say everyone has failed at their job, and I'm sure there would be some employees who stick around. There are a lot of people in Baseball Operations. But a new GM (and president) should come in, and have the ability to choose their own people to surround themselves with. I would guess the new GM would want to expand things like analytics department, have their own right hand man, etc. Pretty standard stuff for the top of the organization
  12. Keith Law called his slider "Plus" in his February prospect article. I'm not sure where that poster got that information, but maybe he just had a bad night with the slider or its an innacurate report... little more likely than all these scouting reports saying his slider was his best pitch were wrong?
  13. I think most people are...Why would they keep those guys around Post-Ryan?
  14. I appreciate your attempt to be positive amidst all the negativity surrounding this team, but its really hard to take your baseball opinions seriously when you write this kind of stuff.
  15. 1) I'm not going to give him credit for this, but it worked out fine. 2) I don't know about this. I remember being pretty confused by the extension at the time. The Twins were about to lose 90 games for the 4th year in a row, Perkins was like 31, and had 2 full years left on his contract. 3) I don't fault anyone for Mauer's extension, injuries happen. But wasn't it Bill Smith that signed it?
  16. I was big time pounding the table for Rasmus after the 2014 season, of course they preferred familiarity to someone who could play CF, was younger, had upside, etc. Austin Jackson got 1 year $5million, he hasn't hit much, but we all saw the defense over the weekend. If you had traded Plouffe, Jackson is a pretty damn nice RFer and backup plan at CF.
  17. The Manager doesn't seem to understand platoons any better than the previous manager either, so I will agree if Hicks was here he probably wouldn't be used the way he could be valuable. IE: Since Mid-April when Arcia started receiving steady playing time, 4 of the 6 games he hasn't started has been vs Righties. Kepler's 1 start in a week coming vs Rodon, etc.
  18. Right - or if you break it out by year... he had a .334/.424/.520 line in 125 games in low A/High A in 2013 (Pre-concussion I'll point out, since we all seem to agree that messed up Mauer for awhile)
  19. We're splitting hairs at this point... To go back to McCutchen, his career OPS in the bigs is .880... I would say with 5 All Star games and an MVP in 7 season firmly counts him as a superstar. It depends who you are comparing him too. He's a CFer with elite defense and speed, if you want to look at solely OPS, he has a much lower bar then Corner position players. If he was a 1B I would say .880 doesn't make him a "superstar"
  20. That's fair. I'd prefer him as a plan B than Danny Santana or Darin Mastroiani
  21. I went to one Saints game last summer to check out the new Field, who was playing RF for the opposing team? Jason Repko. That being said, Hicks is a good defender and can hit LH pitching pretty well. I think at worst he has a floor of very useful 4th OFer who starts a 2/3 times a week. Which is pretty useful, just maybe not what people here had hoped for
  22. I should have said "chance at stardom is over", that is what I meant
  23. That wasn't intended to be sarcastic or snarky, it's May 9 2016, you don't think it's a tad preposterous to say someone considered by most to be a high end prospect who has something like an .875 ops in AAA right now won't be ready to hit Major league pitching this year OR next year?
