  1. Why exactly did they need to bring his monetary value closer to his market value? I'm not trying to be a smartass, but where exactly would you draw the line? Hughes is making around $8million a year, if he wins Cy Young this year would you propose ripping up the final 2 years of deal and giving him 5 years for $110 million? If Perkins would have lost the closer job last year due to performance, it would only be fair that he reduce the remaining years of his deal? Signing a player to a longer term deal involves risk from both sides, the player is risking that they could out perform the deal and undervalue themselves, the team is risking guaranteed money for a player that could get hurt or underperform. Perkins and the Twins knew of these risks in 2012 when they agreed to contract. That extension looked pretty good in hindsight for the Twins, sometimes the extensions don't work out as well (Blackburn).
  2. Exactly. You seem to be the only person here who has grasped that this was completely unnecessary. Explore it after 2014 or 2015 if both parties want too. It's not going to be a killer contract even if he does fall off a cliff, but so so unnecessary
  3. Yes, they just paid him 22m for 4 years. They already had him signed for 3 years and 12 million! What they really did was pay him 10 million for 2017 with not knowing at all what will happen with him over the next 3 years
  4. Team option for 2016 = under team control for 2016. They control what they do with him in 2016. Perkins has been durable, he also will be 34 years old in 2017. "It makes it easier for them to turn down his option in 2018 as opposed to 2016?" Huh?? The 2016 option was for a very reasonable price, the 2018 he will be 35, unknown if he will still be healthy and/or effective, and it has a buyout attached to it. Again, why would the team pay for his 2017 season pre-2014, not to mention give him raises the next 3 years
  5. Does everyone here realize that Perkins was already under team control through 2016? Am I missing something? Why in the world would the team do this? Closers have short shelf life's, Perkins will be what, 35 in 2017? Why not wait 2 or 3 years and see if he is worth an extension. This is a head scratcher to say the least
  6. I understand that ads are a necessity to keep a site like this running, but put me in the camp that is far less likely to visit in the current format (sliding ads, distracting ads, ads in the middle, etc)
  7. Great idea, let's lower the return on a possible Morneau or Span trade NBA teams do this ALL the time. When you give up the best player in a trade or in this case a quality MLB player for the "potential" of an unproven minor leaguerthrow in your worst contract. A Span trade may be able to fetch the Twins two prospects, an A and a B prospect (what the Twins wanted from the Reds at the deadline). So to respond to getting a lower return on the trade...YES, it would absolutely lower the return, but to me getting Blackburn's $5.75 million off the books next year is worth only getting the A prospect. I would at least consider it in the trade talks, because his contract is a waste of valuable payroll and it eliminates the need to put him in the rotation just because he is paid so handsomely. Umm, wrong sport. There is a salary cap in the NBA, not in MLB last time I checked
  8. Do you think the Star Trib will write a new article about how he "found/fixed the mechanical problem", or will they just re-run the previous versions?
  9. Great idea, let's lower the return on a possible Morneau or Span trade
  10. Thanks for posting. Its good to see that note on Berrios; in the Klaw chat yesterday he made a couple comments about Berrios not having a real high ceiling, and his stats so far this year being due to the fact that he's advanced for his age... but without the high ceiling.
  11. Do you think part of him "not liking" the Twins may have had a little to do with the fact that for the last 5+ years their farm system has been atrocious? He is very high on Sano, Buxton, Rosario and never gave up on Hicks
  12. Kevin Goldstein was in Beloiit earlier this week to watch Soler and Sano, he was going to write a Baseball Prospectus article on Kennys Vargas, did anyone happen to read that? I'm an insider but don't have B.P.
  13. Is he playing only OF? Or is he splitting time there and at 1B?
  14. I'm only 28 so I don't remember watching all of the names on the list, but wouldn't an appropriate question be is he the worst Major League Baseball player ever? Factoring out guys who just played 1 or 2 major league games, and limiting it to position players, I find it hard to believe there has ever been someone as bad as him. He is literally the worst infielder I have ever seen, and rivals Butera as the worst offensive player to come through here in 20 years.
  15. I agree with those that say Dunn will win comeback player of the year, but in my opinion the award should go to someone who came back from something like injury. What is Dunn coming back from? Having one of the worst offensive seasons in recent history?
  16. 0 chance the Phils give him away. 4 years around 20 million per, pretty manageable contract and a good bet to be traded this offseason
  17. New to August baseball? 90% of MLB players will go on waivers
  18. Obviously it doesn't matter, since the Twins would pull him back... but I don't think Mauer would get claimed. Who do you think would claim him? Yankees and Red Sox have both been firm about not adding payroll. Mauer has had a very good season, but I dont think anyone would jump at the chance to pay a singles hitting 1B $150 million over the next 7 years.
  19. Kieth Law gave Buxton an 80 as a runner and 70 for arm (currently). He projects him as a future 70 fielder, 70 hitter, and 60 power
  20. This list is tools based, because that is what prospects are ranked/ drafted/ traded based off.
  21. It sounds like Victorino is going to the Dodgers
  22. Signing Lincecum is definitely a pipedream, seeing as he isn't a free agent
  23. In 2 days you've got the Twins landing Justin Upton for Span and Dylan Bundy for Morneau-Willingham. Just please stop already troll
  24. This is laughable. I think he's serious too
