  1. Well it's May 9th and he's had all of 49 at bats in 2016, but yeah it's probably a good idea to let him tear up AAA for 2 full seasons because of those 49 at bats
  2. Ok. That's an odd assumption to make, but sure
  3. I guess it depends what your expectations are. If his MLB ops is .870 he's a superstar. I think the best case scenario is a McCutcheon with better defense and slightly less power. McCutcheon had a minor league OPS almost .100 points less than Buxton fwiw. Also, McCutcheon hadn't even reached the majors by the age Buxton is today. FYI, his ops in low A was .990 so your numbers are a little off.
  4. I know you're point, and I strongly disagree. You think it is reasonable to lower expectations for Buxton because of his ML at bats thus far. We don't really need to go any further, I'm not going to change my mind that 180 PA at age 21/22 are fairly meaningless in the scheme of things.
  5. Sure, they might point back to that... but I think the only meaningful thing people will talk about in 5-10 years is how it was pretty clear Buxton wasn't ready in 2015.
  6. Would it make you feel better if say, the DBacks had immediately sent Paul Goldschmidt at 21 after signing him out of College to the Majors, and he struck out a bunch, instead of sending him to Rookie ball which they did? I think its safe to say at this point Buxton was rushed... Just a guess, but if he spent all of last season, and half of this season in the minors his "1st 180 plate appearances" might look a little different, as a 22 year old (still younger than many "elite hitters") debuting in the Majors. I'm not really seeing in anyway how giving a baseline 1st 180 Major league PA test to players is in anyway meaningful. Kris Bryant, Paul Goldschmidt, and many others were in college at 21... Byron Buxton came from rural GA where he faced poor competition, spent most of his Age 20 season not playing, had ~250 PA's above A ball, and struck out a bunch in the Majors
  7. Kris Bryant was swinging a metal bat at 21 and Byron Buxton's career was already over at that age, pretty sad!
  8. I'll reiterate - if he becomes one of the 5-10 best hitters in MLB will anyone care what his 1st 187 at bats looked like? He wasn't ready at 21 off an injury plagued, throw away season, oh well. To the 2nd question. No... again, many of the best hitters in MLB aren't even sniffing the majors at 21.
  9. You're listing 5 guys... a few of which are under 25 and practically locks for the Hall of Fame already. No, he did not start as well as them... throw in Ken Griffey Jr and A-Rod as well. That's as meaningful of sample size as posting his OPS+ (which someone else did above) in 50 plate appearances this year. The sample size of players making the Major leagues at ages 23 or 24 and becoming super stars is pretty damn big. He's been terrible in his ~180 major league plate appearances which have been spread out over 2 seasons (most at 21 yo), with a DL stint mixed in there as well. Josh Donaldson just won the American League MVP and was just getting his feet wet in low-A ball at 21. R-E-L-A-X
  10. It's a neat conclusion you have drawn, but fairly meaningless. How many "elite hitters" have even had ML at bats at 21, let alone productive ones? Recent history; Trout, Machado, Harper... and...? Buxton might not have the offensive upside of these once in a generation talents... oh well. Looking at some of last years Batting Leaders Donaldson? 26 his rookie year Goldschmidt? 23 Nelson Cruz? 25 AJ Pollock? 25 McCutcheon? 22 Kris Bryant? 23
  11. Correct. Some of the moves he makes if taken completely alone, make sense. When put in context with everything else he does... not so much. Kevin Jepsen was great last year, but he was never going to single handidly get that team to the playoffs. Why even try
  12. Ding ding ding C- Hitting like a back-up catcher that he should be, only slightly off from 2015 numbers. 32 years old with a lot of games caught likely catching up to someone who wasn't all that good in the 1st place 2B - Dozier struggled for 3 solid months to end last season, I for one am not surprised at all with his numbers thus far. I think they will improve, but I don't think this can be counted as a shock SS - Escobar has never been a full time starter, the lack of extra base hits is hurting... but maybe there was a reason he had never been a starter? 3B - I said multiple times they should trade Plouffe not just to fit Sano in at 3B, but because it could be a better lineup w/o Plouffe. Get whatever you can. Low obp, ok power LF - Rosario is a 4th OFer, why are people surprised that someone with his lack of plate discipline, who had a .290obp last season is worse this year? CF - Buxton is going to be fine, but who's really surprised he couldn't hit the 1st 3 weeks of April? Was given ~15 games to prove himself.
  13. Would anyone be surprised if Brunansky lost his job in the next week or two? I don't have a strong feeling on him one way or the other, but that seems like the easiest scapegoat for a team unwilling to change management.
  14. Good thing Sano is in RF so that 3b defense remains top notch
  15. http://www.1500espn.com/news/2016/05/zulgad-talk-about-a-total-system-failure-pohlads-message-is-latest-blunder-by-twins/ I don't particularly care for Zulgad, but I thought he hit the nail on the head here... in case anyone is looking for a non- these comments from Pohlad were great! angle
  16. Yeah I agree Buxton is on Molitor, and it bothered the hell out of me too. Meyer - who made the decision to call him up when he was on a roll in AAA? There were other options , I think both share equal blame there.
  17. Give which one a pass, Molitor or Ryan? Ryan is the one who sets that 40 man roster, so.... Also, they cut a catcher from the 40 man to try and promote a guy who would rather retire, so I don't buy into the fact they couldn't have found a way to keep Kepler in Rochester getting at bats.
  18. They've won a playoff game more recently than the Twins. They've also changed Management because they weren't satisfied with terrible results.
  19. I agree Molitor deserves a lot of blame there, but I'm not so sure about absolving Ryan for the Buxton, Meyer, Polanco, Kepler treatment.
  20. Does anyone know why they made such a point to announce he would be given another start? Nearly every beat writer on Twitter wrote "Molitor says it is likely he will get another opportunity next week". Gibson is on the DL, I assumed he would be in the rotation at least until he is back, hopefully longer. Why is the bar set so high for these young guys, where if they fail once they are done?
  21. They gave Milone $5 million just a few months ago and aren't willing to admit they were wrong. He will continue to be run out there through May. I don't agree with this btw. Start Meyer
  22. Yup I just edited my post - I read that on here earlier today but it was obviously incorrect, as it appears Polanco was called up
  23. Someone (Seth I think) mentioned if Santana/ Duffey goes to a DL, that doesn't mean Kepler/Buxton/Polanco are eligible to skip the 10 day window, only a pitcher would be, since its a pitcher going on the DL. So unless they plan on making another 40 man move, yeah a 2 man bench it is, which is just pure madness. EDIT: Lavelle is saying Polanco is on his way back up, so maybe Seth was mistaken when he said it would have to be Pitcher for Pitcher
  24. I would imagine its just pushing everyone back a day, and Milone gets bumped from rotation... don't think there's anything to read into it being Gibson's turn
