Over the course of a season this can work because the odds will even out with the desired outcome. The problem comes when you get to the playoffs or a short series, you need the best players to win and can't rely on a platoon advantage. This is where they keep getting themselves caught. Like you said develop these players fully, don't handcuff immediately when they come up.

You are correct, you play the schedule you are given and you take the results you produce. And they are competing in the AL something 3 teams have not been able to do. While I am enjoying this year, I am hoping the front office is taking a realistic view of what it takes to compete in the future. Will the American League continue to be this even or will more teams pull away. I want the front office to be thinking and acting on how to be one of the teams to pull away. But you have enjoy being in a pennant race at the end of August and having something to play for yet.

We don't know yet what impact Abel would have had on the season. He could have put up Sim type numbers or could have been closer to Bradley. We did need someone to give innings and he probably would have done that after looking good his last two starts. But unfortunately we still don't know what we have in Abel.

I needed to come back to you as well one more time on this subject. You were providing sound logical responses to my comments and others as well yesterday. I was frustrated and probably still am and that showed in my responses. But I do appreciate your thoughts and rationale on this subject and others as well. Hopefully we can disagree on the lineup on day 1 of the playoffs because that is what we all are rooting for.

I wanted to come back to this one more time. My responses to your comments yesterday were not probably the best or even fair. You have been giving a sound logical argument to all the comments being put forth here and I should have shown more respect than I feel I did. I was and am frustrated at the roster construction but you are providing another point of view that is sound and reasonable.

And while I am not familiar with their situation, it doesn't appear they have a clear opening for another starter. They traded Castillo at the trade deadline because of an excess of starting pitching and now they call up their top prospect and are finding room for him.

I am not as convinced as you are on Keaschall playing some at 2B. But Larnach has to start hitting, he is hitting .159 the last month, if you are in a pennant race, he has to continue to produce and right now he is not. I realize what he has done all year, but you still have to finish. As for Buxton, he is not going to play every day, they are going to manage his playing time. My guess either Saturday or Sunday this weekend he will either be out of the lineup or DH. Lewis shouldn't be playing 2B either in my opinion if the goal is to keep your top hitters happy, then he needs to play 1B only. They definitely blew it by not calling up Jenkins when Buxton went on the IL. We are not to going agree and I understand that, but this offense has been struggling since the all star break and to say there are no ways to try and improve, I don't agree with.

This talk about the locker room is great but it shouldn't be the only criteria. You are there to win games and if you can make a move to try and make your team better, you do it. There are no guarantees in life. There is a fine line between earning a spot and keeping your spot and that is where Larnach is right now. But no he shouldn't be benched but he can sit a couple of games a week. If Shelton is so good at managing the locker room he should be able to manage this. But to roster a player because he's not competition to beat anyone out and continues locker room harmony is just sheer baloney. Are we in Little League or the Major Leagues.

Is Buxton going to play every day for the rest of the season, I doubt it. My guess at a minimum he will DH at least once a week. Sitting Larnach who has been struggling two games a week and Keaschall can move to second two games a week. There are 5 games a week to try and give your offense a jolt. The offense is struggling right and needs some life, there are never guarantees in life. But this is someone you can find playing time for and I don't think it is going to totally disrupt the team. If nothing else tell them to perform better and they wouldn't have had to make this move.

Maybe not a fair comparison, you are correct but the point is still there, someone with Jenkins talent you can find at bats for.

The Twins must be reading TD, they found a solution to get us to stop asking for Jenkins, he is sitting out the second game today. Can't force his way up here if he doesn't play.

Lewis has earned the opportunity to lock 1B down next year. I am not sure what more you want from him since his call up. He has raised his average almost .100 points since he was demoted and it doesn't matter where you start from, that is tough to do this late in the season. He is showing signs that he could play a good 1B with time and more reps similar to Mauer. -
Using the word irreplaceable was not the right way to phrase it. I realize that Jenkins and ERod may not have the production of Bell next but quite honestly they could, we don't know. Even if it is a low probability. As I have tried to say some of Bell's RBI's are due to opportunity by hitting in the middle of the order, I would hope he would have 100 by the end of the year but I don't think he will make it. I would prefer to keep the DH spot open and not have a bat first guy in that position. It would be nice to have a rotating spot not just for the outfielders but for other players to have a half day off. If Clemens is going to be more of a utility guy, he could play in the field for Lee or Lewis and they could DH that day as an example. I like the name of Diaz but they haven't played him in the field at all this year and Arranda is not exactly a Gold Glove first baseman. I like Bell better than I sound, but that feels another stopgap. They have talked about using the DH as a rotating spot so commit to that.

They had an opening on the 40 man roster but deemed a third string catcher who doesn't play more worthy of that spot. You don't make the moves they made at the deadline and then stop and that is exactly what they have done. Are they contenders or not, back it up with action.

And where is Jenkins, he needs to be up here now but at the latest in the opening day lineup. This isn't about pecking order, he is there #1 prospect and shown he is ready. Everyone else takes a back seat.

Bell is league average in most stats and is very streaky. We weren't having this conversation in July when he was struggling. I find it interesting that Lee has 10 fewer RBI's and one more HR, his OPS is a littler lower but not by a considerable amount, but yet I keep hearing he needs to hit better to stay at third. Bell has the majority at bats hitting the 3-5 spots in the lineup, while Lee has been mostly in the bottom 4 spots of the lineup. Some of Bell's RBI's are because of where he is hitting. Bell has done better than I expected this year, but I don't think he is irreplaceable, quite the opposite he should be replaced and give those at bats to others.

Shelton is willing to move players around just to get Caratini time at 1B, but he wouldn't do it for Jenkins. That is totally baffling to me. Philadelphia moved a gold glove second baseman to 3B to get Arraez 's bat into the lineup.

Jackson is a good clubhouse guy and integral to their success. And you can pinch hit Jeffers now, going without a second catcher for two innings is just too big a gamble.

You are correct any player can be upgraded. But I don't want to see it with one of their fringe veteran signings. If ERod or Jenkins pass him up, that is understandable or bring in a player with a proven track record who is not at the end of his career. Then I can understand replacing him.

Larnach-2 games, Buxton-1, Keaschall-1, Bell-1. There is your 5 games a week and he is a better option for a late inning outfield defensive replacement than Clemens. This is your top prospect showing he is ready, there are not three or four if you include Bell All-Stars in front of him. And you can always play Keaschall at 2B once or twice a week if you want to keep his bat in the lineup every day. When you look at who is on this roster and you aren't calling Jenkins up, I am not sure how Zoll can continue to justify him not being here.

Cody, thank you for the article. Zoll's word are just a bunch of corporate speak for I am too afraid to take a chance. A talent like Jenkins you find at bats for him. Larnach is scuffling and you had people in yesterday's game thread calling of Roden, there are AB's right there. Buxton is not going to play every day as they manage his hip injury, more AB's. They just need the will and they don't have it. Other teams make this kind of move but Zoll is either too scared or incompetent to do it. He is carrying two players on the roster that Shelty won't use. And if what Dan Hayes says is true the only reason Jackson is on the roster is because he is a good clubhouse guy. So does he lose at cards and that the puts the players in a good mood to go out and slay their opponent on the field. Jenkins needs to be in San Diego tomorrow, there really is no excuse. This is the only time I will ever advocate for Tom P. to be involved in personnel decisions, but he needs to go into Zoll's office and say do it now.

I don't disagree, I just mentioned him and Adams as the only two with options that would be possibilities to be sent down. Probably didn't need to include him. I was more reacting to the Nance comment, we aren't getting rid of someone that we traded for to bolster the bullpen.

With what he has done for nearly 3 months, in my opinion he needs to be part of the lineup next year and any moves made should not to be replace unless it is a clear major league proven player with production. He may slump just like Clemens has and Bell has or any other player will in the course of a season. That won't outweigh the fact that he has been our best hitter for nearly three months.
