    Fools Gold

    It's 4th and 10. Are you really going to go for it?
  2. Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in !
  3. I hope I'm wrong, because Bull Dozier is one of my my favorite players on the 25 man roster, but BD's recent surge has not only helped the Twins win games in July, but his surge has increased his chances of being traded soon. To quote what Falvey may be saying in response to teams inquiring about Dozier's availability: "Make me an offer I can't refuse".
  4. Agreed. Now please trade Rodney before July 31, 2018.
  5. Huh ?
  6. As Scarlet said: "Tomorrow's another day";
  7. I'm glad to see Dozier beginning his annual second half surge.
  8. Offer Sano and Gordon and Gonsalves. We need flamethrowers. I'm not too sure how successful Gonsalves will ultimately be. I'd much rather take a chance on keeping Romero and Brustar G. We have Polanco at SS for now, until Lewis can be ready. Pay Escobar whatever it takes to keep him in Minnesota. He is the heart of this team. Then in 2-3 years Polanco can move to 3B because Escobar will be slowing down in a couple of years. We have Javier who will be ready about the same time as Lewis. We have the hitting machine who was just promoted to the Lookouts and who has hit 348, .309, .347, .385, .320 in the minors and has struck out only 101 times in 1057 at bats and who has made only 19 errors in 1701 innings at 2B. Arraez can play on the Twins soon. As for 2019 at 2B, try to sign Dozier for a 1 year deal to allow our minor leage middle infielders to get ready. Dozier may want to build up his possible 2020 payday by playing for the Twins one more year and Dozier may want to see how the FA market levels out in 2019, rather than signing his "biggest payday ever" after a below average (for him) year. That's my offer to Miami for their sorry, slow, fumble fingered, player who plays at a position which unfortunately is very rough on the players' bodies and contains constant risk for great and serious, multiple, DL-resulting injuries.
  9. The Twins are a better team with Polanco at SS, Esco at 3B, and a good fielding catalyst in CF. I'm excited to have Polanco back at SS and I have enjoyed watching Cave start in CF.
  10. he can play all four infield spots and all four outfield spots. Maybe the Twins are on to something with that 4th outfield slot.
  11. The Twins need a young, healthy major league above average defensive, average offensive catcher. For a number of years, year after year, we searched for an above average SS...now we need an above average catcher.
  12. How is Arreaz's fielding ability ranked? How strong is his arm? Good hands? Is he a fast runner? Will he play 2B or 3B or move to the outfield? Thanks for these hope-filled monthly reports and rankings.
  13. Great quote. Thanks for saying what I also feel. Through the excellent articles here at TD, we get to follow the Twins' prospects, we root for them, we care about them...only to have them cast aside and instead we sign a pitcher who shoots imaginary arrows after "he" saves a game. Not my style.
  14. I am looking out the Twins' window and all I can see is the Cleveland Indians backsides as they run away from the rest of the Central Division.
  15. "Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in."
  16. It would be hilarious today for Fernando Rodney to be brought in from the bullpen in a Zamboni. Sweep the Sox. I want to see some brooms in the fans' hands today.
  17. I submit that the most important Twin to ignite the Twins' offense is the one in the batter's box. Now wait a moment before you dismiss my comment. Think of all the Twins' "swing for the fence" swings that have been fanning the air. Think of the grounders straight into the shift by Twins' hitters, resulting in easy ground outs or a line drive right into the shift. Think of all the runners stranded on 1B and 2B because the Twins' batter would not/could not "bunt them over" or hit behind the runner. We have mentioned lack of power (except the 2 Eds who lead the American League in extra base hits by a teammate duo). How about some more singles, some more walks, and some more hitting to the opposite field from all the Twins' batters. How about playing for 1 run, instead of everyone trying to hit homers. We have better pitching than in recent years so small-ball will produce better results, since our opponents are scoring less runs per game. With good pitching, low scoring games will be more frequent. Look at the Twins' record this year in one run games (3-13). I submit this pitiful record in one run games is a clue. The Twin in the batter's box needs to get on base by any means, advance the runner, knock the runner in by any means possible, and then score that one run that each batter represents...not by constantly swinging for home runs, but by playing as a team.
  18. I'm not so sure about this. Polanco is Latino. He seems to show absolutely no emotions. Sano also seems to hold it in in games. Remember both of them suffered the loss of close family members last year. It was an extremely tough year for them. If you looked at Pressley's face after the recent home run hit off him, you would have seen the face of agony. I believe some individuals, no matter where they may be from, are more demonstrative that others. Eddie is just being Eddie. Who would want to stifle that personality? I feel the Twins have many players, Latino, German, African American, "good ole southern" , and "upper-midwest stoic" who are not very demonstrative individuals. But as Gardy used to say, "It's a long season". I understood, but did not like that saying, because he always said it after a loss. I look at it this way: We live one moment at a time. Each moment is a gift. That is why it is called the present. Play today's hand (game) to the best of your ability and give it all you have. Be a leader by example first, then by words. If Paul Molitor, with his back ground told me something, I would be foolish not to listen. He wouldn't have to yell at me, nor cuss me, nor throw bats into the shower. He earned it, plus he is the manger and I am the player. The Twins may have had the perfect storm of injuries and suspensions the first 2 and a half months of this season, but that is in the past and the Twins have a game today. Go Twins! Beat the ever living ___ out of the Red Sox! (Sorry, I got carried away there.)
  19. Great article SD. I recently toured Dale Junior's race shop with some of my buddies who were in my home town for an army reunion. The shop was amazing...full of computers, laser measuring devices, robotic work stations, aerodynamically slick paint, and engineers with PhD's. NASCAR, baseball, and other sports are changing due to external changes in our human abilities to do things quicker, with more strength, and with more precision. In our society, our athlete's average physical sizes are increasing due to diet, environment, medicine, improved training techniques. The wealth and resulting time away from having to work sun-up to sundown to produce food and shelter, and the relatively peaceful existence that our society currently enjoys, allows our best and brightest to concentrate on sports, instead of storming a beach in the Pacific or setting ambushes in a jungle. One of my favorite movies is Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life". I'm glad I can enjoy a "wonderful life" by watching and discussing baseball, instead of worrying whether my son will come home from Vietnam or Korea or some foreign land. Today I want to say thank you to all who are in our military currently and to those who have served and especially to all those who died, to allow us to be discussing future changes in baseball instead of whether we are winning a war. SD, I have no idea how I got so far off topic...but it must have been due to your extremely thought provoking article. Thank you.
