  1. Well, if we are going for an outfielder with lousy luck that isn't too busy, look no further than Mallex Smith. The Braves promoted Smith to the major leagues on April 11, 2016. He debuted that night against the Washington Nationals, starting in center field. Smith went 1-for-3 in his first game, with a strikeout and a single against Max Scherzer. Smith's helmet lacerated his forehead on a stolen base attempt in the fourth inning, and he left the game. On June 20, Smith fractured his thumb after Mets pitcher Antonio Bastardo hit him with a fastball. The next day, Smith was placed on the disabled list and expected to miss eight to ten weeks of the season. After a July reevaluation, his return date was moved to September. Braves interim manager Brian Snitker later stated that Smith would likely miss the remainder of the season.
  2. When we closed the Metrodome, didn't we reenact Hrbek lifting Ron Gant's foot off the bag at first?...maybe I just made that up.
  3. ....and that also answered the question about your ability to withstand pain and suffering.
  4. I don't see Grossman in the Twin's future. If you were putting together a defensive outfield, you have Kepler, Buxton, and Rosario. So, the question is if you want Grossman off the bench as a 4th OF. Well, he isn't a defensive improvement. Offensively, you could bat him for Buxton, but if you are going to bat someone for Buxton, why not bat a guy who has more power? So, I would prefer ABW or Palka coming off the bench over Grossman. I think Buxton will be brought up to stay. What's the point of watching him clobber AAA pitching? We know he can do that. So, I see him on the roster and playing CF where he is a game changer.
  5. I think we have a shot at not being the worst team in the AL Central. Went to the game yesterday in TB and one thing that I noticed was how little some of the outfielders in TB seemed to care. At this point in the season, there are a lot of teams just going thru the motions. As long as the Twins don't take that approach, they will continue to climb. Another thing I noticed was that the TB outfielders have scouting cards in their back pockets that they check before the hitters to position themselves whereas the Twins outfielders rely on the coaches to position them.
  6. Ask the moon for Santana. He knows how to pitch and get guys out. The 3 k's tonight with guys on 2nd and 3rd showed that. If the offer isn't right...we can revoke. I don't see Detroit having enough left in their farm system to get us to trade Santana in division.
  7. Spot on. I'm down in FL and the Rays announcers commented on is first AB how long his swing is. Big league pitchers have multiple options on getting out guys with long swings.
  8. Oh, don't get me wrong. I like their moves and we all know that they are willing to spend to get talent where it isn't home grown. The problem is that the players still have to execute and stay healthy and all that. It takes talent, but it also takes some luck to win a World Series.
  9. Plenty of "experts" on MLB network, ESPN, and even right here.
  10. A couple of things. First, Meyer is a risk. He's got mechanical issues and shoulder problems. Along with that, he had a tendancy to become derailed mentally if he disagreed with an umps call or when something went awry. Don't discount the mental aspect of baseball. Second, I can't help but chuckle at the people ready to usher the Yankees into the World Series in a couple of years for a dominant run. Whoa! Prospects do not equal pennants. Use Meyer, Buxton, Sano, or whoever you want as an example, but things can go sideways with prospects in a hurry. Did I think they made wise moves? Yup. Do I think that guarantees them anything? Nope. Injuries, the NY spotlight, and a hundred other things can derail all that. I do think that they have the resources to recover if those prospects don't pan out, but let's not hand them any trophies just yet.
  11. What? No mention of Butters? He's a free agent next year!
  12. I think he's listed as day to day...but aren't we all?
  13. I've never done a game thread before and I'm only starting this one because no one else has. Apologies for overstepping my bounds. I can only assume that we are all suffering from a trade deadline hangover which brings me to the topic of this thread - the hangover. From the Mayo Clinic website - Various factors may contribute to a hangover. For example: - Alcohol causes your body to produce more urine. In turn, urinating more than usual can lead to dehydration — often indicated by thirst, dizziness and lightheadedness. - Alcohol triggers an inflammatory response from your immune system. Your immune system may trigger certain agents that commonly produce physical symptoms, such as an inability to concentrate, memory problems, decreased appetite and loss of interest in usual activities. - Alcohol irritates the lining of your stomach. Alcohol increases the production of stomach acid and delays stomach emptying. Any of these factors can cause abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting. - Alcohol can cause your blood sugar to fall. If your blood sugar dips too low, you may experience fatigue, weakness, shakiness, mood disturbances and even seizures. - Alcohol causes your blood vessels to expand, which can lead to headaches. - Alcohol can make you sleepy, but your quality of sleep will decrease. This may leave you groggy and tired. - Alcoholic beverages contain ingredients called congeners, which give many types of alcoholic beverages their flavor and can contribute to hangovers. Congeners are found in larger amounts in dark liquors, such as brandy and whiskey, than in clear liquors, such as vodka and gin. Notice that the common factor in all of these symptoms is alcohol. Nowhere on the Mayo site is the baseball trade deadline even mentioned. Unbelievable! Hangovers for me these days last for days...let me rephrase that - hangovers for me these days last four days. The older I get, the longer it takes to bounce back. As far as today goes, I didn't imbibe too much in the trade deadline banter. Therefore, I can only assume that I have bounced back sooner than the rest of you. One last hangover reference...the movie. I was going to insert an image of the movie here, but, on second thought, all I need is to say is: You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack, it grew by one. So, there were two of us in the wolf pack. I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later. And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together, in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, I make a toast!...to the Minnesota Twins wolfpack! Starting lineups: Twins 1. Brian Dozier ® 2B 2. Joe Mauer (L) 1B 3. Max Kepler (L) RF 4. Miguel Sano ® DH 5. Kurt Suzuki ® C 6. Eduardo Escobar (S) SS 7. Eddie Rosario (L) CF 8. Jorge Polanco (S) 3B 9. Danny Santana (S) LF sp - Kyle Gibson Indians 1. Carlos Santana (S) DH 2. Jason Kipnis (L) 2B 3. Francisco Lindor (S) SS 4. Mike Napoli ® 1B 5. Jose Ramirez (S) 3B 6. Lonnie Chisenhall (L) RF 7. Tyler Naquin (L) CF 8. Abraham Almonte (S) LF 9. Roberto Perez ® C sp - Carlos Carrasco
  14. He can be (and has been) put on waivers. However, if the Twins and another team come to a trade agreement, the player would have the ability to exercise his no-trade clause or waive it at that time.
  15. I think trades can be assessed similar to a spring training assessment of a team...by the number of IF's involved. So, in this case, I think we know what we have in Santiago - a lefty #4 starter who's 28. Bunewhatever - a hard throwing kid who lacks control. They, on the other hand, are saying IF Nolasco can stay solid like he has for some of his recent outings and IF Meyer can get healthy and IF he can solve his control issues....more IF's = less likelyhood of success.
  16. Read them now...they are reading the reports that they got fleeced. They thought Meyer was better than what he is. They know Nolasco isn't as good as Santiago. They are not happy with the trade now.
  17. I think both teams have to agree to the trade which means that the team trading away the player is really in the drivers seat.
  18. Liked the Abad trade. Nolasco trade is a wash...he was owed 12 million next year. We are paying 4 million and if Santiago goes to arbitration, it is estimated he will get 8 million. So, even from the money standpoint. I think Santiago and Nolasco are pretty similar other than the arms they throw with. Meyer for the a AA flamethrower isn't bad. Disappointed in not moving Suzuki. Overall, a C+ for Antony.
  19. Saving 20 million? We are paying him this years salary PLUS 4 million next year AND Santiago will probably cost about 8 million next year if he goes to arbitration. I see this as a wash in terms of money. You can debate if Meyer is worth the prospect brought back. I see Santiago as a left handed Nolasco.
  20. Got it. OK, sounds like we are paying the rest of this year and 4 mil next year. Hmmm. Well, I guess we need a lefty in the rotation since I don't see Milone in the rotation next year.
  21. So, we gave up Meyer to get rid of Nolasco AND we sent money to the Angels to pay for his lousy contract AND we got a guy back who is a FA next year? I don't think this is a good deal for us.
  22. Feldman to the Blue Jays...so much for Santana.
  23. Is the fact that Suzuki isn't being talked about an indication of how bad our catching is? I mean, he's our starter and no one even wants him as a backup???
  24. They will build a base from these guys and then spend big for pitching.
  25. I'm trying to find which teams are listed most frequently in no trade clauses. Not finding anything. Anyone have any insight on this?
