  1. Sorry so late on the response Chief. A couple of reasons. I think that Werth is a really big downgrade in defense. We are spoiled now defensively, but for what we would have to pay JW to give us Willinghammer type of defense on a fill in basis, I'd just as soon spend on pitching. I've never bought into the whole lefty on lefty thing. If you give a guy enough reps, I think they will adapt which is why I'd like to see them get their reps, take their hacks, and I think it pays off down the line.
  2. As far as getting Lackey for a veteran leader, I think Erv is probably a better example that I want my young guys to emulate. As far as getting Werth in the dugout to hit lefties, I'd rather let our young guys take their hacks and learn how to hit lefties rather than taking up a roster spot for that. I see Werth as wanting to stay in the NL.
  3. So,what your saying is that I am not only a "crazy old coot"...I am a crazy old mudhen! Who knew?!
  4. Good for him...who doesn't love a Mudhen? What even is a mudhen? I gotta look that up.
  5. Dunno. Here's the tough part for me regarding any of our pitching prospects that have been around for any amount of time. I haven't seen any of them in person. So, like most, I'm forced to look at the numbers...but numbers often depend on the guys behind you. Let's face it, having Buxton behind you roaming CF should make the numbers better. Taking away an extra base hit now and then tends to lower the ERA, get you off the mound and back into the dugout while throwing fewer pitches....all good for the numbers, confidence, etc. So, I don't know what any of our prospects are truly worth.
  6. Hellickson on a 1 year deal. Ross to a minor league. Hard pass on Ubaldo. The only reason I would consider Hellickson is that I don't think Philly had a very good defense. And by that, I mean balls that could be caught by our outfield that didn't get caught in Philly. They fall as hits and affect the ERA of a pitcher, but if they are caught, the ERA plummets.
  7. You are 100 percent correct. So, the question isn't when will we sign a big time free agent? The question is when will we try a different approach? We can't do it the way that those big market teams do it...but we can do it the way that KC did it. Put together a solid lineup - check, put together decent starting pitching - not quite there yet, put together a lights out bullpen - not there yet. Rely on your starting pitching to get thru 5-6 innings and then bring in a bullpen that effectively makes it a 5 inning game for the opposition while our lineup gets to feast off other bullpens. The Yankees have actually put together that type of lineup and they were a game away from the World Series. The Yankees also spent a pile on that bullpen, but the point is that rather than focusing on getting in a big name starting pitcher, focus on putting in a lights out bullpen. Give the opposition 5 innings to beat us.
  8. In my perfect world, I want 8 relievers with the following roles: Closer A Closer B (left handed) 8th inning guy A 8th inning guy B 7th inning guy A 7th inning guy B Long reliever/6th inning guy A (left handed) Long reliever B/6th inning guy B (left handed) If my starter gets gets shelled early, too bad. Suck it up and get me 100 pitches/5 innings. I'll write off the game. I want my bullpen A and B to alternate days, recognizing that they may have to go back to back at times (extra innings, LOOGY situations, injuries, etc.). If a starter pitches into or beyond the 7th, those guys get an extra day off. Now for the most important part. Do your job well. Our goal is to shorten the game for the opposition. They get 5 innings to score. We get 8-9 innings to score. There's my formula for winning 60 percent of our games. Realistic? Probably not.
  9. It's interesting. I think of Darvish as a young gun...he's 31. I really do agree that the Erv Santana's of the world are rare and I've been vocal in the past about signing pitchers north of the magic 30 because the numbers don't lie. The dropoff is quick and seems to be irreversible. Relievers seem to be right around 32 when they hit the wall (Glen Perkins is a shining example). A mistake of offering a long term contract to a 31 year old is a mistake that has long term consequences to a smaller market team than to a larger market team. What are the thoughts of just focusing on bull pen arms? Keep 13 pitchers (5 starters) and 8 guys for 1-2 innings that can dominate. In the event that a starter gets hit around early, write off the game and have him go 5 innings or hits the pitch count. If a starter goes 6-7, you get to give a bullpen guy or two an extra days rest now and then. Otherwise, you have a platoon of 4 guys that work every other game from the pen. Yeah, I know it's a perfect world scenario, but it's at least a plan.
  10. Based on that, do you think Rosario is the guy to try to lock up now?
  11. Lock them all up at reasonable salaries with bonus $ for # of at bats. That way, they have incentive to stay healthy and the odds are if they are all healthy, the Twins have success. Look, Buxton is great, but Rosario has incredibly quick hands at the plate and a great arm to go with good speed. Rosario was good this year, but he has a chance to be elite. If we can lock up the outfield for many years, the pitching gets easier to come by. No pitcher wants to play with bad defense behind him and every pitcher wants to pitch with good defense behind him. Lock them up and then work on pitching.
  12. Good questions, but I'm not sure the team bought in last year...and then when things went off the rails soooo early and we were basically out of it in May. I think he has evolved as a manager and I an think the team has matured as well. I don't want to see them start over with a new guy when I think this team is on the verge of taking another step up. Buxton and Sano with an entire year of doing what they can do. Kepler has upside, Polanco has upside, and so does Berrios.
  13. I disagree and here's why. If you look at the season that just wrapped up, the Twins defense improved a lot and it's been documented that Molitor emphasized it early and often in spring training. When management traded away pitching before the deadline, Molitor united the clubhouse - "No retreat. No surrender". They played hard for him. It was the clubhouse, including Molitor, against management trying to prove them wrong and they did. If you replace Molitor with one of their guys, that guy would have already lost the clubhouse before they started. These guys have a bond with Molitor now. They will play for him.
  14. Agreed...not sure the NY fans would agree as they seem to expect every close pitch to go their way. Made me laugh though.
  15. I'm really curious where Grossman fits in the scheme of things. Granite has to be better defensively than Grossman and I would think that there are better bats around than Grossman (maybe not). It seems that we are kind of trying to put a square peg in a round hole because he's not good in the outfield and doesn't have the kind of pop you would want in a DH. He did not look good last night at the plate.
  16. I think the Twins success this year had to do with Falvey and Levine, but not the way that some might think. That was a determined, pissed off, group of guys in that clubhouse....and rightfully so. It was us against them and Molitor was part of us. It didn't take statistics to look at our August schedule and see that it was a cupcake schedule. We all saw it! Why didn't they? Going forward, if they don't rehire Molly and bring in "one of their guys", that guy has already lost the clubhouse just by being "one of their guys". The Twins were determined to prove management wrong and they did. Now management can either acknowledge that or reject it by replacing Molly. Look, Molitor might not be the perfect manager, but if Falvey and Levine are as smart as people seem to think they are, they'll give him another year. If they don't, we won't see the postseason next year.
  17. May have felt bad for Sanchez, but it felt great for me.
  18. Better stay away from the East coast SPorts Network tomorrow.
  19. This is the inning of the year right here. shut them down and restore order.
