  1. I was lazy. And just wanted to throw an idea out there. I, for one, am just not going to pay attention to claims made about OF positioning, in general, in December. I am not that bothered by Hunter-Hicks-Arcia right now. I do worry about the potential effect on Vargas and Pinto as DH options in the lineup though. I get worried about Schafer starting a bunch of games in LF.
  2. Note: I really don't expect Santana or Vargas to suffer a sophomore regression by all that much. Clearly, if they do . . . this lineup is totally . . . . (insert any bad word you may want).
  3. 1. Santana, SS 2. Mauer, 1B 3. Hunter, LEFT FIELD please 4. Vargas, DH 5. Dozier, 2B 6. Arcia, RF 7. Plouffe, 3B 8. Suzuki, C 9. Hicks, CF The Hunter addition, if he can maintain his bat even from last year, makes the lineup interestingly balanced with the movement of a slugging Dozier down behind Vargas. Any talk of Arcia starting in AAA makes me queasy. There is zero need for that. And the same goes for Pinto. Now I don't want to derail this, but wouldn't it be interesting to consider an honest move of Joe Mauer to LF (for now) some of the time, with Vargas getting more 1B time, and Hunter DHing?
  4. Not really too bothered by this. Certainly this should end the Parmelee era and the Nunez era. And Torii might be having his cake and eating it too. He likes coming "home" and doesn't have to immediately join a mere potential contender. Instead he can enjoy his time back and wait for a real contender who might need his bat for the playoffs.
  5. Nunez is basically only a backup 3B. There is so little value there. Duensing making 2+ million bucks more than his replacement does actually matter to the Twins. A few million dollars a year means a different tier of free agent signing! I don't understand any defense for keeping Duensing around. He isn't even very good in the first place. Starting Darnell in Rochester is almost completely useless. First, they have plenty of starting pitchers between AA and AAA. Also, he isn't going to be a starter. His role is to try to survive as a LOOGY or long relief guy. That said, the potential upside is higher than whatever Duensing is right now. And it's for 1/5 or 1/6 the cost!
  6. Uh, trading away Span and Revere in the same offseason was pretty bold. The Twins don't need to do *anything* bold . . . except for finally roll out the youth movement. Rosario-Hicks-Arcia OF, Vargas DH, Pinto C/PH/DH, May in the rotation, Meyer initially in the bullpen, etc. Sano soonish. Even Buxton and Berrios eventually. Zach Jones and Nick Burdi for sure with a taste this year.
  7. The Twins should be interested in *trading* Plouffe, not signing him to some silly long-term contract! I wouldn't trade until deadline.
  8. Nick is right about all of this. I don't understand why anyone argues for keeping Duensing around. It's 6 times the money for perhaps a worse outcome! Darnell deserves the tryout. Maybe Milone if that starter thing fails. Duensing isn't even a strong LOOGY candidate at this point! Nunez is easily replaced, as he doesn't really belong in the field at all and his bat is very weak. He just runs well.
  9. Maddon is, without any doubt, the guy for the Twins job. There should be no disputing that. They should have at least contacted him about the possibility. The Twins are in a better spot than the Cubs.
  10. No, no, no, no. Can you imagine a serious decline in Buehrle coupled with something similar from Nolasco 2015 as Nolasco 2014? They would then have a ridiculous expensive mess.
  11. No Twins OF should ever dive for a ball in the AFL . . . I really like the performances, especially from the 5/6 the 7 who matter: Buxton, Rosario, Kepler, Reed, and Jones (with Rogers already progressing nicely overall . . . should be a 175 innings guy next year anyway).
  12. 5 years, 25+ million bucks. Just make it happen. He might want the job, actually.
  13. I have come around to Molitor over Dougie, and I think the Twins are headed that way. Promoting Dougie to AA might be enough for him to accept staying in the org for a couple years as a backup plan if Molitor doesn't work out for 2 years. I really like the idea that Molitor is really an outsider on the inside.
  14. I basically totally agree with this. Meyer to the bullpen initially as Milone gets a shot to start would be my only change.
  15. Fantastic article! Wow. This was a good summary of everything. Steinbach was my guy . . . but now somehow the Twins are super dubious about Pinto catching and super super dubious about Herrmann catching. That is just atrocious. When Suzuki reverts to a .630ish OPS guy and his defense doesn't improve . . . ? Anyway, I would like a major shakeup. Dougie to the Twins (with Molitor, Bruno, Cuellar, X, Y, and Z), Glynn stays, Mauer to AA, someone to Fort Myers (firing Smith, clearly).
  16. Haven't read through the thread at all. The Twins should really go after a second-tier FA pitcher, preferably throwing more money per year to lessen the years total. I mean try a 2-36 for Ervin or a 3-45 for him. No four-year deals for anybody. The payroll issue really stems from this past season as well. You can't expect them to actually go back to 100 million bucks this coming year. You CAN expect them to try, though, clearly. Adding Ervin and maybe somebody else in the OF are the only real additions . . . I mean, I am a stickler about this organization, but I just don't know what they should do beyond getting serious about their prospects and *then* figuring it out. Put it this way: Let's say that you eventually in 2015, the potential OF situation is Rosario-Buxton-Arcia-Hicks, and the DH situation is Vargas-Arcia-Pinto. You add in 1B as the Mauer-Vargas spot and the catcher spot at Suzuki-Pinto (all this time with Fryer is a complete waste) and you now have some actual legitimate depth for the first time since 2010. That's 8 players for 6 starting spots (3 OF, DH, 1B, C). This is a very manageable situation.
  17. I would be happy with just signing Ervin Santana and letting it ride for the time being. When the Twins get to 80 wins with youth, THEN spend mightily. I know that Gleeman's point is pretty accurate though, so, well . . . I don't know. I like the idea of buying free agents to trade in the season.
  18. Burdi-Z. Jones-Reed equals a dominant back end of the bullpen by 2016. With or without Perk.
  19. Santana at short. End of story.
  20. Thanks for responding, everyone! Some issues: Yes, I like Chris Herrmann . . . I jumped on that train after 2011, when he was very good for his positional flexibility. And then 2012 was pretty good too, though the Twins didn't push him. 2013 was bad all around. He was great in AAA this year, though. The numbers are there and the defensively ability at catcher is really there too. He is likely just about average defensively there, but that makes his ability to play there and the corner OF positions more valuable. He struggled in the majors, but he is now making more contact, which matters. I like the value of him overall more than Eric Fryer. The potential for a .680+ OPS as a super utility guy is still there. Terry Steinbach is likely a failure . . . Pinto and Herrmann should be adequate catchers. They both were in the minors. Suzuki is going to regress significantly, offensively. It sucks. To counter that Mauer must return to form. It's vitally important that he does so, as I discussed a few months ago in another blog post. I believe in Aaron Hicks. I do think that he was always destined to be a corner OF after the addition of Buxton. He could be an elite corner OF. This would be important for his career. There are viable ways to produce a lineup of: Buxton Santana Mauer Sano Vargas Arcia Dozier Pinto Hicks With Plouffe, Suzuki, Escobar, and X on the bench (Herrmann, Romero, Beresford, etc.). Or you move around things to get Plouffe in and Hicks out.
  21. All this said, I think we will end up seeing some two of the following traded to make for *any* Sano addition: Plouffe, Vargas, Arcia, Pinto, Hicks (and Parmelee, Schafer etc. dealt with somehow). The roster doesn't work out so well for a rebuilding team to have all of them.
  22. Not by me! I think you are generally correct, though I just was cautious about Buxton for a tad bit . . . just to get him a little bit of AA ball. Anyway, I don't know how Sano does upon switching from a position he has now practiced and trained for after moving from another infield position. And then . . . the throwing is all different and it does make me a bit weary after TJ surgery. That said, it is clear that Sano is a better athlete than Plouffe and the latter has just become a good enough defensive third baseman. LF is the clear position for Sano if that is the way to go.
  23. This is not going to be significantly different than the earlier version mid-season, but here is my hopeful 25-man roster for 2015. This will obviously hint at my offseason blueprint. Position players: Kurt Suzuki, Josmil Pinto, Joe Mauer, Brian Dozier, Danny Santana, Miguel Sano, Eduardo Escobar, Trevor Plouffe, Aaron Hicks, Oswaldo Arcia, Kennys Vargas, Chris Herrmann, Jordan Schafer Pitchers: Phil Hughes, Ervin Santana, Kyle Gibson, Ricky Nolasco, Alex Meyer, Trevor May, Deolis Guerra/AJ Achter, Lester Oliveros, Cole Johnson, Caleb Thielbar, Casey Fien, Glen Perkins (probably keeping May as the sixth man, but also using in strikeout-is-needed 6th and 7th inning situations. The Santana signing is wishful, especially at either 2/36 or 3/42. I am clearly already trading Brian Duensing, Michael Tonkin, and Anthony Swarzak for anything I can get. I am cutting ties with Mike Pelfrey because I am not bothering with wasting a roster spot for him anymore. I would then look to trade Suzuki, Escobar, and Fien at some point in 2015. Nothing big, but just adding some talent to the farm system. Replacing them would be Byron Buxton (Pinto/Herrmann duo behind the plate), James Beresford, and Nick Burdi. This is just how I would do things right now. It might change, especially with injuries and other reports from the offseason.
  24. Or basically switch Dozier and Sano, whatever. Add Escobar, Suzuki, Herrmann, and Schafer/Parmelee/Nunez (while noting that Plouffe is also, in this situation a clear backup 3B as well).
  25. I think the decision should be made regardless of how they actually do in the fall/winter leagues. That they play substantially is what matters there. As such I would start Sano with the Twins in 2015, absolutely. I would then wait on Buxton for a couple months of AA-ball, just to get him going. And he would have to be terrible there for me to hold him back. So, I generally agree with Jim here. The Twins now need, absolutely, to let it ride. For those raising Hicks-kind of concerns . . . these two are way, way better than Aaron Hicks. And I would submit Danny Santana as being absolutely similar to Hicks in terms of non-domination of the minors, and yet . . . that has gone very differently! I would say that by mid-June the Twins should be rolling out a lineup of: Buxton, CF Mauer, 1B Dozier, 2B Vargas, DH Sano, 3B Arcia, RF Pinto, C (Suzuki isn't going to perform offensively, I guarantee you) Plouffe, LF (potentially) Santana, SS That's absurdly good, if given some time to develop.
