    Friend in my fantasy league was a big Ventura fan. I send him the clip every year on the anniversary. Also, a picture of this is displayed prominently at the Rangers’ new stadium.

    Hrbek's homer against the Yankees brought me back to baseball. I was a junkie as a younger kid, collecting cards and listening to as many games as possible. After Oliva retired, it was Butch Wynegar and Larry Hisle. In junior high and early high school, I thought I would move on to more nobler things (the future Mrs. IT being one of them, but that's a different story). I would still sorta follow along, however, including reading the newspaper (for the informed, that was a printed thing that would show up in our mailbox each day). One day in the fall of my sophomore year, I read about this guy with a funny name who hit a game winning homer in his first game. As noted, two other rookies hit homers in their first game later that month, and I started to think this could be a fun team to follow again. The next year, Hrbek should have been rookie of the year and became my new favorite. They were contenders in 1984 as I headed off to college and my senior year they gloriously won the series. I've been hopelessly hooked ever since.

    Against righties, Larnach has a .769 OPS. Margot is at .543. There’s plenty to question elsewhere, but that seems like a no-brainer.

    It’s about 97-win pace for a full season, so yeah, I’ll take that record over a 100+ game stretch.

    Going in to tonight, if Cleveland goes .500 the rest of the way, the Twins have to go 22-15, because Cleveland has the tiebreaker. That’s a .595 percentage, which is above their current .560 on the year. However, .560 would have them going 21-16, so they only need to go one game better than their year-to-date pace. Additionally, I put more stake in their recent play. Take out the debacle of the first three weeks and they have played .598 pace over the past 103 games, so 22-15 isn’t at all unrealistic. Similarly, Cleveland built up their cushion in the first half and have been playing .500 for the past two months, so that’s not unrealistic either. That’s why they play it, right? But a couple game lead at this point is anywhere but insurmountable.

    I wasn't able to watch/listen, but from the sounds of things, giving up five runs in nine innings is about what they might have expected with the overall pitching performance from the team. It's just unfortunate (and much more noticeable) when it happens in the way it did.

    Concur. Yesterday's Alcala performance generally goes in the category of, "Stuff happens." If it requires a longer explanation, I'd suggest, "In spite of Alcala having a generally solid year, stuff sometimes happens."

    If Santana and Miranda are on the same team next year and playing every day at 1B and DH, Santana is the 1B.

    Add me to those thinking they won't trade either. As others have noted, there's nothing in the mix in terms of backups and anything they trade for/sign is going to be a wash financially with trading one of these. Though it would be unpopular, I think it's much more likely they trade Castro than either catcher.

    Can someone find the White Sox broadcast version of the Thome home run? It's some of the best commentary in the history of television, but I can't find it anywhere. Thome hits the homer and it's followed by 52 seconds of silence, ending with Hawk Harrelson mournfully saying, "And we'lllllll be back," as they head to commercial. Ah, 52 seconds of glorious, glorious silence.

    To build on this, the most recent starters in St. Paul were Plutko (shelled), Henriquez (bullpen game), Boushley, Matthews, MacLeod and Morris (first start in AAA, after only 10 in AA), For the Twins, we have Lopez and Ober as "established" guys, followed by SWR and some combination of Festa/Varland/Matthews in the last two spots, plus Paddack on the IL. I've no problem with letting the young guys roll (and would like to see it), but we have more than 40 games remaining. The odds of any major league team making it through a 40-game stretch using only six starters are pretty slim. Add that it's the end of the season, amidst innings counts and a season's worth of fatigue, and they're even slimmer. Paddack has not returned to throwing yet, so the likelihood of him starting many games (and lasting long) is pretty small. If (when) it comes to that, I'd rather start Hill than one of the guys in the first paragraph.

    After being there, I also realized I should have posted something to see if others were in attendance. I appreciated the sessions with the front office guys as well. Their comments would add some great nuance to conversations that often happen on TD -- being "data-informed, but not data-driven," for example. And the sessions with both the hitters and pitchers were wonderful, hearing their stories and perspectives of today's game. I'll never think of Jack Brohamer in the same way. I was there with IT Junior, who is a member. As he said, there was some great geeky research, but geeky researchers often aren't great presenters.

    He could easily sign a minor league deal with opt out after a two weeks. That's what they did with Keuchel last year. He wouldn't need the 40-man spot until (if) he gets called up. I'm guessing that's how most teams would address it with him. I don't see a contender starting him without at least a couple tune-ups. If he's willing to go that route, I'm all on board. A minor league deal doesn't guarantee you use him. If he pitches well, but they don't need him, let him walk. If he pitches poorly, let him walk. But if he pitches well and Varland/Festa don't give what you want, he's an available body. Meanwhile, St. Paul gets an extra pitching coach. But I agree with Chief in thinking that if it was going to happen, it would have been done by now.
