  1. Concur. And the nice thing about signing Simmons is that that 11th man doesn't have to be able to play SS. With Donaldson's health, someone who features being a corner guy makes sense, which led me to Todd Frazier and would explain the Marwin rumors.
  2. In honesty, I'm not that bothered by the notion of Kirilloff starting with a few weeks in St. Paul. I mean, I'm annoyed by the notion employers taking advantage of employees, but I think there's legitimate baseball reasons to do it. This is written without knowing the rest of the roster, and it assumes health on the part of everyone, but: It is true that he hasn't had any AAA at bats. If he's going to stumble a bit in going up a level, I'd rather it be on the east side of the river. It gives a couple weeks to explore whether Arraez can play a passable left field. Or Cave, if he's shown anything in camp. It gives opportunity to pick an opportunity for success for Kirilloff. Rather than opening day against opening day pitchers, and if buys the time they want, they could use the mid-April trip to Los Angeles and Oakland, for example. That's about as low-profile as one could get.Not saying I'd go that route. Just saying that it's defensible. It also does fit the pattern of this FO not tending to assume that a rookie will be a rookie at season start. It's for that reason that I think we'll still at least one, and perhaps two additional starting bats signed, with the idea that opportunities will arise for Kirilloff, Rooker, Larnach, Lewis, etc., when there are injuries and they've demonstrated that they are on top of their game in AAA.
  3. Someone smarter than me will hopefully respond, but my understanding is that playoffs don't count toward service time. With a new collective bargaining agreement needed, there's a reasonable likelihood the rules will be changing as well, but I'll not be surprised if they go the "he still needs some seasoning" route for a few weeks.
  4. I'm meeting some guys for breakfast on Saturday, but hoping to get home in time to see “Yeah-Yeah” (Luis Arraez), Timmy and Tommy (Tyler Duffey), “Squints” (Randy Dobnak), “Ham” (Mitch Garver), Benny “The Jet” (LaTroy Hawkins), Smalls (Thad Levine), Bertram (Devin Smeltzer) and Kenny DeNunez (Tommy Watkins) do a reading from The Sandlot. For having to settle for virtual, the lineup actually looks pretty good: https://www.mlb.com/twins/community/twinsfest
  5. This isn't a takeaway, but more of a reminder that this is another example of why we shouldn't be getting our shorts in a wad when we don't see activity in November, December, and January. That's not the way this front office works. Perhaps I'm missing one of the larger transactions, but the average date on which Donaldson, Maeda, Cruz, Marwin, Lynn, Odo, and now Simmons were first acquired via trade or signing works out to Feb. 7. I'm guessing they aren't done.
  6. Now they can sign Cruz to play left. Surrounded by Donaldson, Simmons and Buxton, he’d only have to cover about 20 square feet.
  7. Jeff Passan: Twins sign Simmons for one year at $10.5M.
  8. With how contracts for relievers have gone, it's hard to imagine Rosenthal or Colome coming this low, but I'd love to see splurging on one of those two in the $5-$6M range and then two from among these in the $2-$3M range: Jeremy Jeffress. Tyler Clippard. Joakim Soria. Mark Melancon. Darren O'Day Brandon Kintzler Along with a flyer on David Robertson and Steve Cishek or Pedro Strop on a minor league contract. While I'm at it, I'd give any of them a $250-$500 buyout on a second year. In my mind, I'd rather get a fistful of those guys for $10M than spend that much on one Hand. Young guys will still get their opportunities in a bullpen like that, but I'd rather not start the season with too many young guys getting their feet wet.
  9. True. Though to be fair, Bauer did a lot more of his learning in the majors. Paxton pitched only three games in the majors before his age 25 season. Bauer's career stats are worsened quite a bit by having thrown more than 360 inning by that point. Compare the last five years and it's a different story, not even taking into account that Bauer was available for 827 innings during that time, while Paxton was only available for 588.
  10. Did anyone from Elizabethton get retained in another position? Just before Thanksgiving, on a road trip through the area, we took a slight detour to drive past the park. Still had the Twins signage, but the only folks present were a couple of city employees doing grounds work. I was hoping to get a bargain basement E-Twins hat on clearance.
  11. Odo, using the $2M saved for a Maeda-type deal with Mike Foltynewicz. If Folty gets the starts/innings to make for a bigger payday, that's a good problem to have.
  12. Are you equating "significant" with "splashy"? Because the Maeda and Odo moves qualify as pretty significant to me. I think the strength of this FO is their ability to make under-the-radar moves. Pineda, Cruz, building up solid bullpens out of nothing, etc.
  13. Yeah, it's hard to believe that even with vaccinations, there won't be some sort of limits on attendance for the first month or two. Adding, from rotoworld.com: According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, the Rays are planning to open the 2021 season with a limited number of fans attending games at Tropicana Field. The defending American League champions could be one of the few teams allowing fans in attendance when they host the division-rival Yankees for their 2021 regular season home opener on April 9. Per Topkin, seating will be limited to around 7,000 per game, with fans required to wear masks and sit in small pods distanced from other groups. According to a league memo distributed last week, teams are not required to have negative COVID-19 tests, proof of vaccines or temperature checks for fans attending games, but are requiring masks be worn, except when eating or drinking, or if they have a medical condition. Fan attendance will be subject to permission from Major League Baseball and local authorities this spring and could change if there is a significant uptick in cases amidst the ongoing global pandemic. Further adding, from IT Snark Dept.: So 7,000 fans in Tampa. In other words, about normal.
  14. First post? Great job -- you've captured the movie well.
  15. My understanding is that teams have been told to plan for their regular mid-February report dates, with ST games starting later in the month. Opening day in Milwaukee is still set for April 1. https://www.mlb.com/twins/schedule/2021-04 An earlier report said that teams at AA and below wouldn't report until MLB and AAA have left the training facilities for the beginning of the season, but I've not seen confirmation of that. Though major league schedules are posted, it doesn't like minor league schedules are listed.
  16. As a northern Indianaer, it’s MLB Audio for the radio and the occasional TV game when they play the Sox. (Or all the East coast teams get rained out and one of the networks stoops to having to show one of the Midwestern teams besides the Cubs/Cardinals series.)
  17. Robbie Grossman to the Tigers. And... Phil Hughes announces his retirement.
  18. Another idea for AA and A, given that players lost a year of development, teams were cut, and they essentially have to work two years' worth of draftees into the system is to allow expanded rosters at that level and play more doubleheaders to ensure they get their full slate of games.
  19. Your link isn't working for me. Beyond that, it does seem to make some overall sense to wait to start AA and A after MLB and AAA are gone. Perhaps this is in the article, but it seems like there will need to be a way to keep teams from saying that they've got a bazillion guys with a shot at making the team. Assuming even 28 on an MLB team and another 25 in AAA, I'm guessing there will be a limit of perhaps 70 players, give or take, in camp?
  20. From Rotoworld.com. According to Robert Murray of FanSided, the Astros, Red Sox, Nationals and Twins are among the teams interested in free agent right-hander Alex Colome. Murray also notes that each franchise has individual ties to Colome, thanks to the presence of former Rays employees within each organization. The 32-year-old right-hander, who was with the Rays from 2013-2018, recorded a microscopic 0.84 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 16/8 K/BB ratio over 21 1/3 innings while also converting 12 saves during the shortened 2020 campaign. There's still a chance that he could reunite with the White Sox, but he would be a logical fit as a high-leverage bullpen arm and potential short-term closing option with any of those potential suitors. The market for free agent relievers has been moving at a glacial pace, with very few notable signings, but there appears to be plenty of interest in Colome this offseason. The MLBTR guess is 1 year at $6M. I'm in. He's another guy that I'm more interested in than a 3-year deal on Hendricks, particularly if it comes with an option year.
  21. Even Mrs. IT wanted to give this one a “like.”
  22. Concur. I see this and will up it one. A forgotten guy is David Robertson. After being shut down from his TJS recovery in August, the hope was for him to still be ready by spring training. If he's still on target, I'd use a million or so of your savings to sign him, with similar bonuses (on games/innings pitched, rather than games finished) to what they used on Robles, along with an option for 2022.
  23. With two young adult sons, our household already had enough flatulence wisecracks, even without the addition of the Wind Surge to the Twins system. But the older son came through with a sporty Wichita cap for me under the Christmas tree, so I’ll be repping it come spring. Go Wind Surge.
  24. Who were only 1/31st as good as the Baskin-Robbins.
