  1. Pirates now up 6-2 on Cleveland. Chicago cuts it to 6-1 against Chicago.
  2. 4:50 update: Yankees are trailing 3-0, but Baltimore has taken the lead back from Toronto, so we’re back to: No. 8 Toronto at No. 1 Tampa Bay No. 7 Cleveland at No. 2 Minnesota No. 6 Houston at No. 3 Oakland No. 5 New York at No. 4 Chicago
  3. I’m listening to Gladden, who has called it both a balk and strike three. What was it actually called on the field?
  4. Pittsburgh 3, Cleveland 2.
  5. A guy in my fantasy league is a Chicago fan and he was beside himself last night with their last week. On Renteria: “In the series where they got swept he was personally responsible for three of the losses. He’s an idiot. Worst managing I have seen on a Sox team in 50 years as a fan. And that’s saying something considering how bad they have been over the years.” On his suspension: “I wish he had gotten five games instead of one!” And now they’re down 6-0.
  6. 4:15 update. No change, though Cleveland is tied with Pittsburgh. If they would win and Chicago loses, Cleveland moves to 4 and Chicago falls to 7.
  7. They would have to get Houston or Oakland.
  8. If the scores hold up, as of 3:50 (Eastern, where I’m at), here’s what we’ve got: No. 8 New York at No. 1 Tampa Bay No. 7 Cleveland at No. 2 Minnesota No. 6 Houston at No. 3 Oakland No. 5 Toronto at No. 4 Chicago (With Toronto leading and New York trailing, those teams flip. All other seeds would stay the same.)
  9. Knowing just enough about probability to be dangerous, I'll offer these as "coin-flip" percentages... 1-8 series: Toronto at Tampa Bay = 75% New York at Tampa Bay = 25% 2-7 series: Chicago at Minnesota = 15.63% Cleveland at Minnesota = 46.88% Chicago at Oakland = 6.25% Cleveland at Oakland = 18.75% Cleveland at Chicago = 12.5% 3-6 series: Houston at Minnesota = 12.5% Houston at Oakland = 75% Houston at Chicago = 12.5 4-5 series Toronto at Chicago = 18.75% New York at Chicago = 56.25% Toronto at Minnesota = 6.25% New York at Minnesota = 18.75%
  10. Similarly, by coin flips, there are two chances in eight that the Minnesota/Chicago/Oakland games would result in Minnesota being the No. 4 seed. There are three chances in four that New York is in the No. 5 seed. So that makes 6 chances of 32 (18.75 percent) that the Twins host New York.
  11. Yes, Chicago has the tiebreaker on Minnesota, so if the Twins lose, Chicago also has lose for the Twins to win the division. Similarly, Oakland has the tiebreaker on Minnesota, so if the Twins lose, the A's also have to lose to keep Minnesota in the No. 2 seed. Similarly, Cleveland has the tiebreaker on Chicago, so if Chicago loses, Cleveland also needs to lose to stay behind Chicago and get the No. 7 seed. So if these were coin flips, it would be a 1 in 16 chance of all four teams losing.
  12. In a different thread, I've been tracking how the seeds look. I think this is accurate: Tampa Bay (39-20): Locked into the No. 1 seed.Minnesota (36-23) No. 2 seed with a win OR a loss and losses by Oakland and ChicagoNo. 3 seed with a loss, a win by Oakland, and a loss by ChicagoNo. 4 seed with a loss and a win by Chicago.Oakland (35-24) No. 2 seed with a win and a loss by MinnesotaNo. 3 seed with a loss or a win by Minnesota Chicago (35-24) No. 2 with a win and losses by Minnesota and Oakland.No. 3 with a win, a loss by Minnesota, and a win by Oakland.No. 4 with a loss or a win by Minnesota.No. 7 with a loss and a Cleveland winNew York (33-26) No. 5 seed with a win or a Toronto loss.No. 8 seed with a loss and a Toronto win.Houston (29-30) Locked into the No. 6 seed.Cleveland (34-25) No. 4 with a win and Chicago loss.No. 7 with a loss or a Chicago win.Toronto (32-27) No. 5 seed with a win and a New York lossNo. 8 seed with a loss or a New York win
  13. Things are much shorter after Saturday's games: Tampa Bay (39-20): Locked into the No. 7 with a loss and a Cleveland win.New York (33-26) No. 5 seed with a win or a Toronto loss.No. 8 seed with a loss and a Toronto win.Houston (29-30) Locked into the No. 6 seed.Cleveland (34-25) No. 4 with a win and a Chicago loss.No. 7 with a loss or a Chicago win.Toronto (32-27) No. 5 seed with a win and a New York lossNo. 8 seed with a loss or a New York win
  14. If things hold up, Cleveland is the No. 7. (Ninja'ed by LVT.)
  15. Oakland loses 12-3, so a Twins win would slide them up to the No. 2 seed heading into tomorrow.
  16. Can you believe that from Arraez? A wimpy single.
  17. And after reviewing, I note that they appear to be thawing/cooking chicken. An omen?
  18. Boston scored eight runs in the second tonight, but it illustrates a scoring rule that annoys me sometimes. The pitcher gives up flyout-walk-homer-reached on error-single-walk-force-single-walk-(pitching change)-homer. I get how the scoring works and that the error should have been the second out, making the force play the third out. But the pitcher still gave up six baserunners (three walks, two singles, and homer), not counting the error, all of which scored. And he's going to end up with a line that's 1.2 innings and only two earned runs. That doesn't speak to how ineffective he really was.
  19. So, what's the radar range in Minnesota with this rain? (Cue "Airplane" clip.)
  20. And Seattle just put an eight-spot on Oakland and is up 8-2 in the nightcap.
  21. No. The A's have 25 wins in the division (so far) and the Twins have 23.
