  1. Solution: Mauer to C, Plouffe/Sano 1B/3B, Arcia/Vargas/Pinto DH, Rosario/Hicks/Kepler/Buxton OF. Suzuki can play against LHP to let Mauer rest. Arcia can potentially play a few games in the OF on a day that you want more than 1 of the 3 options listed under DH in the lineup. Vargas can also play 1B on days that Sano or Plouffe have off. I would focus on helping Sano improve his defense at 3B. I'd think that team defense would be better with Sano at 3B and Plouffe in the OF versus Sano in the OF & Plouffe at 3B.
  2. This shows why Ryan should be fired. He appears to have no understanding of math or statistics. It's so frustrating to see the way he runs the team. The Twins need a forward thinking GM, not someone who is stuck in the past... Signing AJ would be more of being stuck in the past...
  3. I like this idea, but I think the Twins are too old-fashioned to consider doing something like this. But, I agree with you that they should.
  4. Mauer is so bad now that protecting his health shouldn't be a concern. If he gets hurt then the Twins can play someone better. When he's healthy he's taking up space in the lineup & not producing. At least Mauer showed some defensive skills when he played catcher.
  5. Why won't the Twins do this?!? They had sent him to the bullpen at the start of the year, until injuries caused him to end up back in the rotation. Cueto has been awful of late & the Twins have figured out Chris Sale. I don't see any reason why the Twins wouldn't have loved the chance to jump all over the struggling Cueto. Also, why should they be upset about facing lefties? The Twins are 4 games over .500 on the season against LHP & exactly at .500 against RHP. They should be glad to face 2 lefties in the White Sox series.
  6. Brings me back to the days of the Soul Patrol outfield... It's so great to see good outfield defense!
  7. I'm guessing the Twins will go about 15-10 the rest of the year, maybe 17-8 at best. At 15-10 I'd guess they'll just miss qualifying for the 2nd Wild Card. At 17-8 they likely would make it in. The 4 games against the Angels will be key, since the Angels are near the Twins in the standings. The divisional games are less crucial.
  8. Wasn't the Berrios decision more about innings than service time?
  9. It appears that he has the right attitude toward the game. In the NFL, highly drafted WRs often seem to fail because they have the wrong attitude. They think that because they're highly drafted & very talented that the don't need to work hard. I was concerned about Sano after hearing about his attitude toward BP back in Spring Training & being more interested in hitting HRs in BP than actually working on his hitting skills. It appears that he shows maturity in his attitude & his desire to not just be a hitter who hits an HR or ends up walking back to the bench with a K in every plate appearance.
  10. Well written. Excellent article! I'm sure it will impact the casual fans, like myself, who read TD.
  11. Terry Ryan should be fired for all these bad contracts. Why couldn't the Twins have hired Dombrowski... These contracts are sunk costs now. If the players aren't performing, like Mauer, tell them you will either cut them outright or they can renegotiate their contract. The Hughes deal was terrible, as was the Suzuki contract.
  12. Why did his injury in 2010 end his time with the Giants?
  13. This is very good to hear. I hope he can continue to refine his pitch recognition & strike zone feel to reduce his K rate while continuing to have a high OBP due to walks.
  14. The Twins should not make desperation moves to try to reach the playoffs this year. Their focus should be on the development of their young players. Players like Sano, Buxton, Rosario, Vargas, Santana, Kepler, Berrios, etc should be kept at whatever level will best prepare them for success at the ML level. The coaching staff should focus on helping those players prepare for life as a potential everyday player on the Twins. And the FO should be figuring out what to do with Mauer, Plouffe & others who may not fit in the long-term picture.
  15. Sano might not be getting a lot of hits right now, but look at his OBP! I hope that he can continue to take walks at such a high pace. Imagine if he could hit .275 with a .400 OBP over 500+ ABs. That would provide a great upgrade offensively.
  16. Based on the energy & enthusiasm he brought to the team at the start of the season there was some indication that he would be a good influence for the younger players. Torii has been able to adapt over the years that he has played baseball & he should have some wisdom to impart to the young players. I wish the FO would think this way.
  17. On the Spanish broadcast yesterday Juan Berenguer was filling in for Tony Oliva. Juan & Alfonso Fernandez were talking about the Twins' slump since the ASG. Juan questioned the decisions of some of the players to go & party in Vegas or other places during the break or flying back to Latin America to visit family instead of staying home to rest. I don't recall if he named specific players or not, but he was pretty harsh in his criticism of some of the younger players not taking the days off to rest.
  18. And this would be a terrible decision. Torii should be hired as a coach after this season, not as a player. If he wants to play then he should go somewhere else. If he truly cares about the Twins then he should be humble enough to recognize that his value is as a mentor & coach, not as a terrible fielding RF.
  19. Perkins is playing with fire walking Santana...
  20. Duffey sure didn't pitch well tonight
  21. Can the Twins fire Terry Ryan & hire Dombrowski? http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/13377155/dave-dombrowski-detroit-tigers-general-manager
  22. Will the inherited runner score with O'Rourke pitching? I'd guess he will... He almost did on the hit by Goins...
  23. The blame is on Perkins for not intentionally walking Cruz when he was down 3-0. Then it's on Jepsen for not knowing where the strike zone is. And then on Duensing for his incompetence at stranding inherited runners. But most of all, the blame is on Terry Ryan for keeping guys like Fien & Duensing in MN instead of the guys in AAA that could be up here.
  24. The bullpen sucks!!!!!!!!! And so does Suzuki!!!!! At what point does Guardado start getting the blame for the terrible bullpen. The Twins seem to allow a lot of inherited runners to score. How does the Twins' bullpen compare to other teams in inherited runners?
