  1. I have similar thoughts. I am glad we got the all-star game, but I highly doubt I will watch. I can only watch about five minutes of the HR derby, just the same thing over and over. Going would be fun, but not $150 fun. I will probably tape the futures game and fast forward until I find the Twins guys. But you don't get a great read on a guy after one at bat. I am much more excited about the progress of key players that will help the big league club win in the future.
  2. Exactly. He is likely still throwing that 88-89 mph heater and guys are still hitting it hard, just at people. This won't last. He jumped the gun on trash talking, IMO.
  3. Probably, Gardy is probably using Nolasco as a model of toughness. If it was a rookie he would publicly berate them.
  4. Good call. 4-95 or 5-120. Seems unlikely to me.
  5. Big time. Pelfrey in the rotation next year makes absolutely no sense to me. He will have one year left. He has been horrible and hurt while here and the last time he was good was 2010, when luck played a role. He is not apart of the next contending team and he absolutely no shot at starting a playoff game. He actually makes less sense next year as Corriea does this year. But unfortunately I would not be surprised. A veteran, even a bad one helps Gardy sleep well at night.
  6. While I would love to see it, this guy is going to command huge money and I don't see us doing it. I think the Royals may give him a deal because they gave up Wil Myers for him. If Homer Bailey is worth 6/100, this looks like a 6-7 year deal in excess of $150M to me.
  7. Coordination is key. The FO needs to set a vision like Theo has set in Chicago. It was noted on this site that we have a similar farm system and record over the last few years as Chicago. While true, their manager knows and is managing towards 2015 and 2016. Our manager thinks Danny Santana (CF), Yohan Pino, Matt Guerrier, Escobar, Parmelee, and Colabello are leading us to the world series this year. If anything, an identical record with veterans playing over rookies is proof they are doing it better than we are.
  8. I totally agree here. We are behind the curve on Sabermetrics and platooning, to name a few. I don't think Gardy would ever be open-minded about these things. He goes off his feel, his love for veterans and guys that were good for him 6-7 years prior, and who things that can't be quantified like "busting his tail off" and "flipping it good". In order to close the gap, I would like to see some new thinking and some new blood plucked from organizations that are on the cutting edge.
  9. I completely agree. What Nolasco has given us is 103 IP at a 5.90 ERA. That is not helping us at all. In fact, his elbow will be worse, any surgery and recovery will be put off, and we could have used those 103 IP on a young guy like May or Meyer. Just imagine for a second if a young pitcher, not a veteran had done that. Gardy would be mad.
  10. S.M.A.R.T. Goals. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time Sensative. We have had none of the above.
  11. Here is my two cents. I am not a Rick Anderson fan. If we wanted to list players that were better elsewhere versus here, I think the better elsewhere list would be longer. In any event, let's wait to chalk up Worley as an Anderson failure and lets see how sustainable this is. He had a 4.30 ERA in AAA this year and has pitched a total of 27 innings with the Pirates. In those 27 IP, he has left 87.7% of his runners on base and has a .225 BABIP. His K's per 9 of 5.9 is better than his number in the mid 4's here, but this is not screaming nanny nanny boo boo.
  12. I missed the sarcasm, but I am not offended in the least bit. No worries.
  13. I am usually in the camp of lets make a run at this and Billy Beane is a smart guy. But if we had given up Buxton for Jeff S. and Hammel I can't say I would be cheering (Russell is the 3rd rated prospect in the game). Jeff S. is a free agent in 15 months and is demanding a $100M deal over 5-6 years. He has a career 3.95 ERA in the NL. He has definitely been good this year, but do you want to hand out that deal? The A's won't and his value for 3 months won't be as high as what they gave up for him (when they try and flip him). Hammel has a career 4.62 ERA, also having a good year. It just seems to me this is a huge buy high deal. The only other time I remember the A's doing something like this it was a Matt Holiday rental for Carlos Gonzalez. That turned out very badly for them, this has the chance to as well.
  14. I was suggesting he will get back to throwing near his career ERA from here on out. Not that he will end the year with his career ERA.
  15. I agree. But I think Terry is a better low budget GM than mid to high budget GM. I think he is either stubborn or finds bargain bin type deals as exciting or a fun game. I honestly believe the single best thing the Twins could do is keep TR as the GM but set a minimum payroll of say $110M to $120M. Force TR to spend that amount.
  16. With over 1,000 IP at a 4.37 under his belt prior to this year, I really hope this is an anomoly. I am guessing it is and he will normalize at some point to a slightly higher ERA than that.
  17. Certainly a lot of truth to this part. I can say I would not be proposing better rules if we were signing guys left and right.
  18. Maybe not 100% of the time. But having 30 choices and being able to sign at 16 versus being picked at 18 or 21 is an advantage. Sano and Ynoa (older) received bonuses similar to a top 5 pick and they did so when they were 16 year old. Tanaka was able to sign a $150M dollar deal at 24. He didn't have to play in the minors, come up with a team owning his rights and making rookie or arbitration dollars for 6-7 years. Jose Abreau received $70M.
  19. That would be more interesting. I think MLB will attempt to come up with a solution that does not hurt the player as much. The draft pick comp has killed guys like Lohse, Drew, etc. We can say Drew could have taken $15M, but the market probably had him at 3/30 or 4/40 or more without the pick attached.
  20. I am sure all the GM's and front office folks are pretty sad that Scott's image has taken a hit this year.
  21. In the 2014 case study, you have Drew, Morales, and Nelson Cruz. All turned down thinking 1/14 was not enough. Cruz bit the bullet and signed a 1 year $8M deal. He has played great this year, has 26 HR so far and will be handsomely rewarded next off-season. The two guys that sat out have seen their stock plummet.
  22. That is the key. Not working out or not having access to MLB facilities, trainers, or frankly maybe not having someone checking in on you has hurt these guys. It almost always happens. You see it in football when rookies or even veterans hold out and miss training camp. Whether it is guys taking the qualifying deal or taking less after they gauge the market is not what they thought, I think you see next to nobody sitting out for months on end. This has definitely been a what not to do lesson.
  23. I agree, if Willingham or Correia get a draft pick attached they are going nowhere fast.
  24. I agree with almost everything on the write up. The one issue is I don't think Willingham's value to us is medium high. If we are in contention then I agree, I don't think we are making a run here though. He isn't going to be here next year.... I agree with Doug, I would like to see Suzuki get extended 1-2 years, unless it is crazy money. I don't think we trust Pinto at all and what is behind him or on the market next year is scary.
  25. Throughout this discussion, I have developed a thought. I don't know if it is valid but I can logically see how it could be. I also don't think it is a good thing, just might be reality. Maybe MLB does not want an international draft? Today you have academies all over south and central america. This brings primarily poor 10-16 year old kids access to trainers, facilities, and 15 hour a day instruction. The chance at the next Miguel Sano, or Ynoa's older brother that signed for $4.5M is what makes these academies a reality. So if baseball put in place an international draft where the Astros get the #1 pick every year and they put in place hard bonus limits, it would suppress the value of these bonuses a great deal. The bonus would likely be much lower than are currently doled out because MLB is concerned about the escalating prices and you would remove the big players bidding (Yankees, Red Sox, etc.). It would seem that lower bonuses would create a situation where the academies are not rewarded as much and in turn, they could take in fewer kids, some could close, etc. Maybe in a twisted way they do make the MLB product better. Thoughts?
