  1. Under the premise that no team would trade for him, you think it makes more sense to give Corriea another 10 starts, then leave as a free agent? Over giving those starts to Meyer or May? Seems completely logical to me. One helps the team in the long term and one doesn't. You can't make decisions today based on sunk costs.
  2. And I really hope that these 34 year old FA's with limited upside are not signed next off-season. Could we not have gotten the same or better production from Tonkin or Achter over Matt G? While imporoving for the long term as well? Hopefully we do a little soul searching next off-season and realize that we were 0-3 this year, 0-4 if you count Pelfrey.
  3. No reason for Meyer to throw another pitch to AAA hitters.
  4. Unfortunately Meyer did start. 6 IP. 5 H. 0 Runs. 8 K. ERA is down to 3.11 and he has something like 115 K in 101 IP. This just ain't right.
  5. Meyer just pitched 6 IP, 5 H, 0 runs, and 8 k tonight. His ERA is now 3.11. He has 115K in 101 IP. The Twins seem infatuated with AAAA types and need to have at least one in the rotation at all times. So I would cut Correia right now if we can't get a prospect for him. Not 7/31, not 8/15 or 8/31. We don't need to waste Meyer inning at peak velocity, something tells me he is ready (see stats above)
  6. I guess if the Twins knew at the time they did the deal that Glen left money on the table because it was the Twins.....then shopping him 3 months later with a selling point being the contract....seems slimey because the contract was only $22M because it was with the Twins. Maybe he would have only signed 4 years and $32M with the Pirates? At the end of the day we don't know the context of the conversation between the two parties. But I suspect that Glen will NOT be traded and this is one of the reasons why. We will never know the context of the conversation or why they didn't trade him.
  7. Yeah...I get he was with the Twins and could only sign with the Twins. My point was I don't believe he would have signed that deal had he been drafted and in the same positon with any other team. From his comments and SI's take on the link below, it appears that A) This contract was viewed as team friendly and Glen signed that deal be with the Twins forever and that was what was important to him....which I read to mean it wasn't all about the money. I think we are overblowing the fact that he has 3 teams on a no trade. 3 teams? 10% of the league? Also, the team option switching to a player option, this is not a huge deal IMO given that he will be 36 at the time, his 6th or 7th year of free agency and at that point likely a 7 year closer track record as a top 10 closer, all for $6.5M. The guy signed that deal at the time it was plausable we were an 85-90 loss team the next year. So 3-4 months later trading the guy...it just doesn't smell right to me http://www.si.com/mlb/strike-zone/2014/03/17/glen-perkins-extension-minnesota-twins
  8. Touche. It was a dumb statement by Perkins and he should not have made it. But one bad comment in the media does not equal a guy that leaves $20M on the table to play for his hometown team. Immoral may have been a bad word on my end. But it seems slimey to me. Hey, commit here for the next 5 years and take a discount......then shop the guy around 4 months later with the primary selling point a team friendly contract. He would not have done that deal with anyone but the Twins, IMO.
  9. The best part of a KC trade is clearing a spot for May or Meyer. Although I suppose it is not a lock they come up because the Twins made odd decisions.
  10. Are saves factored into the fwar calculation? It appears to me Glen could have 20-30 more saves from 2012 to 2014 on a better team. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=rel&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2014&month=0&season1=2012&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0
  11. The fact that set up guys make more than Perkins, I think showcases his value more. I just think in a year or two if we need a closer we aren't going to pay the money required to get one. Last time that led to the Capps trade. But the broader point that several have made is that he did leave money on the table. So it seems wrong to me to move him and getting more than we otherwise would because he is due set up type money.
  12. The first $2M spread accross 6 years is simply a function of MLB rookie contracts. Some of the deal may reflect the fact that he was a few years from FA. I will give you that. But an elite closer that gives up 5 FA years for $27M (including the option) is leaving a ton of money on the table. All star players don't typically do that in their 3rd contract. He will make as much in 5 free agent years as Rafael Soriano made in two years (Glen actually has a better ERA as a reliever than Soriano's career ERA). I doubt he would have done that deal with any of the other teams in the league had they drafted him and he had been in the same position.
  13. I just wanted to highlight, even if he was 8th or 9th best....You can find 15 closers that make more money than him.
  14. Seems like quite the generalization. He does make millions, but he would earn closer to $8-$10M as a free agent. He didn't hire Scott Boras and hit free agency because he is from here (I think his wife is too), lives here, enjoys it here, has a family here. Most players don't care...but not all. And having a guy take a home-town discount, then shopping him around the league and getting a nice haul because he is under contract to such a great contract.....that seems immoral to me. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should.
  15. I purposefully blocked that one out! Thinking more about this, to have him take a home town discount, then trading him with a selling point of a team friendly contract is very low in my book. I had a neighbor who gave another neighbor clothes her son grew out of (for the other neighbors kid to wear). A few weeks later the neighbor was having a garage sale and was selling the clothes. This kind of feels like that.
  16. Here is a quick list of the last 8 closers to sign free agent deals. Glen's $5.5M deal is below market, big time. Benoit $7.75M a year Balfour $6M a year Nathan $10M a year Wilson $10M a year Broxton $7M a year League $7M a year Rivera $10M a year Soriano $14M a year (8th inning guy, but signed to a closer deal) The guy took less money to play here. We should not be trading him unless he approaches us and wants out.
  17. This list was really funny. I heard TC Bear is ahead as well.
  18. My hope was see what he will sign for and do it if it was reasonable. The Twins seem to think what he wants is not. Now step 2, trade him for the best package out there.
  19. Perkins may not be in the top 5 every year. But over the last 4 years he has to be a top 5 closer. Tons of turnover, people losing their job, getting hurt, etc. 2011 - 2.48 ERA, 9.5 K per 9. 1.23 WHIP. 2 saves (set up guy) 2012 - 2.56 ERA, 10 K per 9, 1.03 WHIP, 16 saves 2013 - 2.30 ERA, 11.1 K per 9, .92 WHIP. 36 saves 2014 - 2.83 ERA, 11.3 K per 9, 1.01 WHIP, 23 saves Regarding the other relievers, most teams end up promoting their best set up guys to closers in time. So if Betances is for real, he will be closing soon for the Yankees and he can establish a track record and enter into the conversation. Set up guys also have the benefit of favorable matchups, versus a closer coming into the 9th regardless of who is coming up, righties, lefties, etc.
  20. You also have the moral aspect. The guy signed a 4 year, $22M deal and gave the Twins a team option for $6.5M. An elite closer for $5.5M a year in a league that had guys making $14-15M at the position.
  21. I agree, KC and Josh need to be moved by 7/31. The price will only go down after that. To your point, you have the waiver process and the difference between getting a guy on 7/31 versus 8/31 is they can help your team for another 30 days if they go on 7/31.
  22. Perkins is a top 5 closer. Maybe not in any given year, but over the last few years his name is up there each year. I don't want to count on Burdi, the longevity of guys that throw 100+ and have a 90+ mph slider is not great.
  23. Great point Dave. He has taken two team friendly deals now. You could argue the last deal was a 30-50% discount. Just out of principal that would be a terrible way to conduct a business.
  24. Yeah, if you draft for floor on every pick....seems best case if all goes well you are a middle of the road team. Congrats.
