  1. I agree with that. .767 OPS, 17 HR so far. The biggest asset for him is his contract. Another year and a half at $8M per is pretty good for that production. I am sure Boston will give him a ton of money. On a side note, Lester has made it known that he will re-sign with Boston. It seems like his goal here was to get some more talent in Bean Town, then go back there. If all goes as planned and that happens he will be a hero in Boston. It does seem like a risky strategy for him. What if he gets hurt in his next start?
  2. We will never know what is being offered or demanded. But if Suzuki would be an upgrade for 5-6 clubs that are in first place or in the hunt...I have a tough time believing we can't get somebody's 8th-10th best prospect, maybe equivalent to our Burdi, Vargas, etc (10-12 with us). The Orioles have been really bad for a long time and had a taste last year. Suzuki is having a career year, but even his career OPS is 80-90 basis points higher than their production at catcher this year. If we are aiming our sights too high and end up getting nothing....than that is a failure to me. I would also give KC away just to clear room. That is worth more to this team this year and next year, IMO.
  3. I view this deadline as a failure if Kurt Suzuki is not traded or extended. The Orioles are 2.5 games in first place in the east and have catchers with a .599 and .573 OPS. Or another franchise in first place, the Dodgers with AJ Ellis really struggling this year (.594 OPS) and Drew Butera. Not that I should have to cite his OPS but I will (.560). I didn't even look at the 10+ other teams that think they are in contention. I find it really hard to believe we can't get anything for Kurt. If he didn't sign with us prior to the deadline, he is going to free agency.
  4. Hard to criticize having $250K left over and buying a lottery ticket with it vs. the Pohlad's buying a nice car or boat. My friends and I were joking that he had 31 K's in 37 outs in his town league. I was thinking that a lot of town leagues involve drinking....imagine trying to hit 100 mph after a few. I know I could not hit it sober...
  5. If Meyer is in AAA because of a super 2 deadline, then the "poor" starts are really a side show. The "poor" starts were mainly due to him not making it to the 4th inning. Here they are: 3.2 IP, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K 3 IP, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K 2 IP, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K If his pitch count was 100 instead of 75-80 and we add a full inning or an inning and a half to each of these three starts, nobody on this site is talking about the really awful stretch he had. 7 ER in 3 outings?
  6. Surely a shred of truth exists to the Twins not bringing up prospects right? I am guessing not every team in a clear rebuild position would have went out and filled their roster with veteran players with no upside and frankly, not certain to outperform the younger players they are taking reps from. I am thinking Pelfrey, Bartlett, Kubel, and Matt Guerrier to name a few. Then there is Pinto, who spent 60% of his time here DH'ing and a ton on the bench. That is great you think Meyer will be up in August, but if he is on a pitch count like many believe he may see no more than five starts. IMO, other franchises would have used this throw away year to get him at least 10-15 starts. They could have brought him up after the 6/15 super 2 deadline most teams use and still had 10-15 starts.
  7. I expect more K's from Gibson in time. His K's from the minors to the big leages fell off a cliff, more than usual. If he can get up to 6-7 K's per 9 with the great ground ball rate I think he is a #2 starter, a very nice piece. Gibson had 102 IP in AAA last year with a 2.92 ERA. May is at 84 right now and Meyer at 106 with similar ERA's. Hopefully they are up soon.
  8. I am guessing the Twins are done trading players to the Pirates, forever.
  9. Good point on how TR avoids the bidding process. I am guessing that is why he was so enamored with 2 year deals for Corriea and Pelfrey. By offering two year deals to these guys, we ensured we were the only ones bidding.
  10. The guy has been up and down too.....ERA in the 2's, 3.98 last year, mid 5's the year prior. If we can trade him at peak value and get an upside player....works for me.
  11. Going straight off ERA, he is a #2 starter or so. I expected him to be better given how quickly he came up, his success here. I think the knock that he didn't listen to coaches potentially hurt his development.
  12. Interesting between Garza and Meyer. Both have a very similar minor league ERA and Meyer has more K's (more BB's though). Garza was up at age 22 though. My money is on Meyer having a better career. Garza has a career 3.84 ERA with 7.5 K's per 9. He really hasn't gotten better than his first two years, 2006-2007 with 3.69 and 3.70 ERA.
  13. This was the funniest post I have read in awhile. I would add Valencia and jason Repko.
  14. I would like to see at least one bat added. Whether it be a corner OF or DH, we need some consistency. After four years of praying guys like Colabello or Parmelee step up, the fewer spots we set aside for guys like that the better. Nelson Cruz, Victor Martinez, or Pablo Sandoval. I get this will cost us $$$ but we should have some. Maybe Torii would sign as a DH. He would be a stable bat, good mentor to Buxton when he is up, and good in the clubhouse. We need a righty. The best catcher option would be Russell Martin, but unlikely. As far as a pitcher goes, I would rather see nothing than another filler guy like Pelfrey or Correia. I would love to see Jon Lester, but that is very unlikely. The best option may be a trade.
  15. I would be surprised if they brought up Buxton in September. They said he was over-matched in spring training and he hasn't played much at all this year. Seems like a high risk, low reward proposition to me.
  16. Very good article. It is nice to see that change up developing as an out pitch. That would likely give him 2 plus pitches, minimum.
  17. It has been more interesting to follow guys like Meyer and Berrios all year, IMO. One edit on the article, Gerrit Cole is a right hander.
  18. I also think a lot of these types end up in New York because they are owed a ton of money, most teams aren't willing to take on money for a below average player, even one with upside.
  19. I would think Buxton gets up to AA. That is where he was supposed to be all year, dominated the league he is in last year.
  20. When you look at the state of the Twins when Terry Ryan took over, it is hard for me to conclude that he needs to be replaced. When you lose 95 games and the MLB team and farm system is bare, priority #1 is rebuilding the farm system so you can get better for the future in a sustainable fashion. By any measure, Terry has done that very, very well. While a poor MLB team has helped with this via good draft picks. We have drafted very well, Buxton, Kohl, and Gordon (early on Gordon), Berrios. In time I think Gonslaves and Burdi will be good picks. Walker was a good value in round 3. And flipping Span and Revere for Meyer and May could end up being a coup. Theo Epstein gets all this credit for the Cubs and he has basically done the same thing Terry has done, while drafting in a better position in 2013 and 2014. I think it was inexcusable that we didn't spend more money to make this team watchable early on in his tenure and we can criticize Matt G, Kubel, Bartlett, etc. But the most important thing could not really have been done any better.
  21. Bingo. Hard to see the rush to move Plouffe, especially given that nobody expects a top prospect in return. Sano is not a lock to stick at 3B and Plouffe is the next best option by far. It is a pretty hard position to fill. Any mention of Escobar will get a response of his career .646 OPS, BTW.
  22. I am a little torn on the expectation. I think if a team in the AL has a need at DH he may have some value. It is kind of like Jake Peavy, his ERA was actually higher than KC's at the time of the trade and he snagged two prospects, one 75 overall. With Peavy and to a certain extent Willingham, we may get a premium because of what he has done. But when you look at the teams in contention, none have a glaring hole at DH and I can respect nobody rushing to have Josh play LF for them.
  23. I agree. The primary case, in addition to that he is better than everyone else is that he needs to face MLB hitters to further his development. He has nothing left to prove against minor league hitters. In fact, his K rate and ERA this year are right about where his career minor league numbers are, i.e. he has not tailed off like most pitchers do. We can get the adjustment period and nerves out of the way in meaningless games, versus next year when who knows....we may be .500 or better.
  24. My vote is either Kevin Suzuki or Josh Duensing.
