  1. I completely agree with point #1. Baseball is 95% batter versus pitcher. It doesn't really matter if you heard a Herb Brooks like speech before walking up there. To the second point, I think most that favor signing Morales are interested in a one or two year deal around $7M annually. Our interest is very conditional and likely not enough to sign the guy. $7M should not be anywhere near 8-10% of our payroll. If it is we have a bigger set of problems. I agree we should not be signing guys because they are comfy here. But a big difference exists between 2-14 for Morales and the idiotic Pelfrey deal. This guy has been an all-star level player, he received MVP votes in 2009 and has hit 70+ HR over 3.5 seasons prior to this one. His career OPS is .800 and in my opinion, is simlpy rusty right now. This guy has upside and could help us win. As far as blocking goes, the truth is he is not blocking anyone on our major league roster or in AAA. Vargas has been mentioned but he wasn't a top 10 prospect prior to this year, regardless of how good he has been. He likely won't be up before June of next year best case. And the block in this case assumes he is healthy and contribution, Mauer is healthy and playing every day, Morales is healthy and contributing, nobody can be moved or traded for value, etc. Very hypothetical IMO.
  2. I like 1 or 2, but if a two year deal at $15M total is not attainable, then he doesn't really want to play here. So be it. #2 it is.
  3. Agreed 100%. If you have Mauer and Morales at DH/1B and Vargas is killing it....it gives you options and is not a bad problem to have. Maybe Mauer can move to LF, maybe you trade one. I too would only be upset if Buxton, Sano, May, or Meyer are blocked.
  4. I am going Dozier. He has by my count 34 HR since June 1 of last year, in 194 games. Starting to believe this power. This is not a Plouffe-esque month or two.
  5. Maybe, but the last guy that "loved playing here" was Pelfrey. Hopefully we either trade him or give him a 1 or 2 year deal at $7M per.
  6. I view it as a way to see how their velocity changes between 20 and 100 pitch outings. Some guys react differently. I remember Glen Perkins as an 90 mph guy as a starter and he dials it up to 97 on occasion. While common to see velo go up from starter to closer, that is a ton of velocity improvement. Even if the grand plan is to move a guy like this back to the pen, I would think 100 pitches an outing would give him the chance at developing the 2nd and 3rd pitches, which would be beneficial to him in the future no matter where he is.
  7. MILB has him listed at 275. Keith Law mentioned on a chat he is close to 300. Even if he is 275, history shows that players gain weight from 22 years and on. http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=573627
  8. I think signing a 30 year old hitter with a career .800 OPS on a reasonable 1 or 2 year deal is a more viable strategy to win games than waiting and hoping that a guy in AA that is 300 pounds, comes up next year and puts up numbers better than that.
  9. Over 2,500 at bats, he has a career .277 average and .800 OPS. In 2009 he was an MVP candidate, 2nd in slugging, 34 HR, etc. I think we can be good next year with some good pitching out of the young guys (if they over come up). Mauer in LF, Sano at 3B, Buxton in CF, Morales/Vargas at 1B/DH, and Dozier at 2B.
  10. You always used to hear how if a young player didn't run out a grounder or showed up late to something, it was always Justin that told him how it was going to be. You have to wonder who is doing that now.
  11. I would go $7M a year on a 2 year deal. Max on both dollars and years. Now that I think about this, Boras is probably already playing the "Morales really likes it in MN card". So you are really going to have to overwhelm him in free agency. Some good points on the other side of this argument, i.e. Mauer is always hurt and if Mauer, Morales, and Vargas are hitting you can find room somehow. That is a good problem. Mauer has to be a better LF than Willingham or Arcia, for example.
  12. Boras's wiki site lists seven players as his key clients. If you constructed a list of the 10 or 15 worst long term contracts of the last 10 years, he would have five players among those seven listed. A-Rod, Zito, Prince Fielder, Jayson Werth, and Magglio (his last dealw as pretty bad). Please, lose his number Terry.
  13. As they say, Boras only signs when he really, really found the sucker. Look at Mike Pelfrey. Initially signed on a deal where he could rehab here for $6M and showcase himself for other teams. He pitched terrible last year and he found the only sucker that would give Pelfrey 2 years. Now Morales will sit out and not play, comes back and plays terrible and wants a long term deal because he "loves it here". Here we go again.
  14. I agree with this point (that we have guys like M and M we would rather see). A also agree that we signed him at the time we needed something better. That is not his fault. If the Twins want to pay me $5M a year to pitch I will. I am primarily a one pitch guy. The 75 mph heater, assuming I get a running start.
  15. Here is his line at AA-AAA: .333, 31 HR, 26 2B in 92 games. Pretty decent 55 HR, 46 2B clip. That bat may play OK at 1B as well.
  16. You would think 3 pitchers between 19 and 24 would mean you have one top of the rotation guy out of the three, at least.
  17. As usual, there is what should be done and what will be done in the context of a Ron Gardenhire team. I agree, we should have been giving Pinto reps all year at catcher, at least 2-3 times a week. The third catcher bit, Pedro Florimon, Drew Butera, etc. Sometimes you have to see things like this as a reality. I think the reality of it is, we won't trust Pinto any more next year than we did this year. Especially when guys like Perkins call him out and we have more on the line, i.e. the development of Meyer and May. I am not saying we absolutly can't trade him, trade him if you get a real nice piece back. But re-signing him should be an option as well given what we may end up having at catcher next year. It is too bad we have to live with this reality, but we do.
  18. That is a risk, but those two years were sandwiched by decent offensive numbers for the positions: 2008 - .716 OPS 2009 - .734 OPS 2010 - .669 OPS 2011 - .686 OPS 2014 - .759 OPS I think you trade him if he doesn't sign an extension, wants north of $8M a year, more than 2 years, or you get a great haul. But barring those I say 2 years and 14 to 16 is fine with me. I think the numbers he put up even in bad years may end up being better than the alternative. I don't think we trust Pinto, so you may end up with Fryer or Hermann, especially with young pitchers coming up. The FA market is scary.
  19. The other issue is our prospect rankings are skewed because we have a great system. Trevor May was the Phillies top prospect and he rated between 6-8 here initially, for example. I think we can get a top 10 prospect for Suzuki given the year he has had, the lack of depth at the position, injuries, importance of a catcher, etc.
  20. I like your list. I would say Corriea and Willingham absolutely need to be traded. Correia would be an upgrade in the rotation for a few contenders, especially since all of the injuries. At a minimum, someone would put Willingham on the bench. I would also say by July 31, I would like to see Suzuki traded or extended, one or the other.
  21. I would at least send people to scout him and see how his stuff now compares to 2012. The guy was the top prospect in baseball pre-TJ. He had 30 IP without a run and 40 k's that year in low A. 57 IP with a 2.84 ERA and 66 K the next in 2012. This year he only has 22 IP this year in low and high A. In the 15 IP in low A he has a .6 ERA with 22 K.
  22. I don't see it either, frankly. I think it is more likely we extend him.
  23. I completely agree. I wish they knew what they were then and are now. We need to take a real hard look at this roster and conclude this isn't a team that is going to go 52-19 to close out this year and end with the 94 win pace the Tigers are on. I am guessing it takes at least 89-90 wins for the second wild card, this just isn't happening. Let's move towards 2015. Trade KC, Josh, Morales, and Suzuki (if you get a nice haul for Suzuki and he doesn't want to sign a reasonable extension) and bring up Meyer and May. Time to get on with it.
  24. If we only had Bud Norris to dangle for Dylan Bundy.
