  1. The Webb comp was more style than anything. The more Gibson's GB/K rates come closer to Webb, the better off he will be. That was my point. Gibson will K more than 4.5 per 9, his stuff is too good to be in Carlos Silva territory. He was double that in the minors and had a decent 7.7 K per 9 in AAA just last year (post TJ). I think he could be a #2 starter and his recipe being a good GB rate, a low HR rate, and 6-7 K's per 9.
  2. If each of the 30 teams has 13 hitters, I think we are a few players shy of fielding them with guys that hit for both average and power. I looked at the 6 teams in 1st place (DET, OAK, TOR, ATL, MIL, and SF) and found a total of seven players that are hitting over .285 with 10 or more HR's. Miggy, Victor Martinez, Carlos Gomez, Mike Morse,, Evan Gattis, Jose Bautista, and Melky Cabrera. .285 is a pretty low bar for a great average and 10 HR almost half way through the year is also quite low.
  3. I know what happened. They were all ridiculed for not hitting HR's. Just one left in the league.
  4. I agree. A ban would be a good thing. These guys are role models. If they didn't ask for it, too bad. It comes with the territory.
  5. That is not the first picture of Buxton I have seen with a huge dip in. Very common even on high school teams. I have heard it is harder to quit chewing than smoking. It would be nice to see a discussion about this and a campaign or ban from MLB.
  6. I am not ready to write off any of these seven guys. I am very interested to know why Tonkin was written off? Tonkin has a 3.42 ERA in 22 MLB innings with 19 K's. May was one of the 7 guys I listed so I am guessing you missed that as you indicated he is being blocked. I agree with the sentiment of your other comment. The Fryer's, Hermann's, Kubel's of the world.
  7. Let's go up to 35 guys that can contribute right now so Gardy can have all the tools he needs. Which two from this list should we take off the 40 man and let leave open for other teams to poach: Tonkin, Hicks, Pinto, May, Polanco, Vargas, and Kepler?
  8. Very sad. He seemed like a very good guy. I wonder if this will jump-start a conversation about chewing and baseball.
  9. Gardy's job is to win games right now. We are on pace for 77 wins. That seems realistic. We have a few more wins than we should but our roster should get better in the second half of the year. I don't know anyone who thought we would win 77 games. So he gets a very good grade. I think the franchise as a whole gets a poor grade for not having a vision and not accepting where our franchise is. We are not contenders. So signing guys like Pelfrey, Kubel, Bartlett, Matt G., etc. are poor decisions. But that is not on Gardy. That is on Terry. They say the coach has to win now and the GM is trying to win 2-3 years down the road. If that is the case, Terry should never have given Gardy these veterans to play. So to see other managerial decisions like playing a potential future SS in CF, hard to also put that on Gardy. It seems like the discussion and balance between now and the future has not been discussed or agreed upon. That is also on Terry.
  10. I think he has the chance to be much better than Scott Erickson. Scotty had a career 4.59 ERA. Gibson's FIP over the last two years is 4.52. I think his absolute floor is 4.30 or so when he peaks. Another guy I think he can get closer to, but not as good as is Brandon Webb. I use the comp because Webb only had 7.3 K per 9, but ended his career with a 3.27 ERA (NL). If that adjusts to 3.40 or so in the AL, I don't think Kyle can get there. But the closer he can get to these three numbers Webb put up the better off he will be: -7.2 K per 9 (high K's in the minors, have left) -64% GB rate (Kyle is at 54% now) -HR Rate of .6 per 9 (.52 so far this year, very low in the minors) I think movement and keeping the ball down is Kyle's strengths
  11. He has spent too much time with Hughes though and needs to make the rounds with Pelfrey, Nolasco, and Gibson on the road games. I am with Dman on this, I think the coaches have very little role here. If I could put this on anything, I would say getting out of Yankee stadium did a ton for his confidence. That is on Terry more than anything. Also only 82 IP, so let's not start a parade yet.
  12. I get it, the BA and slugging are horrible. But he has talant and has shown a few things. Nobody should be giving up on him but some are. LEN3's blog sounds like we may as well cut the guy. Here are a few flashes I have seen: -A great eye at the plate -The slugging was pretty decent last year, he was on pace for something like 16 HR if he had 600 AB (including 3 in one game) -He has a great arm -He has been much better from the right side -He has robbed 3 HR's These things are a decent base for him, AAA will be a nice stop to build on these things.
  13. I guess that is my point, after 450 at bats we should not be at the point of "last resort". Someone pointed out before, Hicks OBP is right were Span's was after 3 years and is tied with Mauer's. Are we really at this point now? Regarding your other comment, I agree we have not helped his progression and that Hicks was probably thrilled to make the team last year. But I am guessing he is at a point now where he probably knows AAA is a better place for him, especially since he dropped batting left. But he is still up here primarily due to a lack of options.
  14. Regarding Hicks arm. He has 3 assists this year. 13 total OF have more in the AL and I am guessing this list if filled with people that have many more reps than Hicks does. If he had just one more assist to make up for all the games he has been sitting on the bench, only six OF in the AL would be ahead of him (includes LF and RF)
  15. After skimming the thread, here are my thoughts: -Why it makes sense to call out a player publicly, especially a rookie with confidence problems is beyond me. Act like adults and keep it in-house. This is not going to help a player develop and will be more of an issue as we bring up 10-14 talented players in the next year or two. -Similar to this notion about frustration, maybe Hicks is also frustrated that he was left up here for too long because the organization let plan B, C, and D leave the organization? Or that they didn't have him drop batting left earlier, say in one of the six years in the minors that he struggled from the left side, which compounds the issue of leaving him here too long? It is interesting that the 24 year old player hasn't said anything about his frustration, but the manager has. It does make sense for Hicks to go down to AAA instead of twice a week up here. I would play him every day down there and I would have him stand in the batters box against every righty that does a bullpen session during the day -This teams biggest needs are CF and SS. It is a fact that we had in our system a CF that is one of the best 3 in the league and we had a player in our system that is a top 10 SS. We gave up on both of them. So to see so many fans and in the organization down on Hicks after 450 at bats makes me cringe.
  16. Glad to see someone is as high on Ryan Eades as I am.
  17. I think we need to give framing about five years. There is so much nuance to this, the pitcher for example. Here is an article showing why it was wise to move Carlos Santana from catching. I just don't buy the difference between a good catchers framing and a bad one is 45 runs, or 5 wins a year. Really? http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/2014/03/mlb-news-analysis-catcher-framing-carlos-santana-yan-gomes/
  18. It kind of comes back to where it always comes back to. Are we in, out, rebuilding, going for it? I would question whether or not Pinto is playing that bad, his OPS is .730 on the year. While Suzuki's OPS is 50 basis points higher this year, Pinto's is actually higher than Suzuki's career .690. He has not caught a single runner, but we are not going to find out if Pinto is a future catcher with him sitting on the bench or DH'ing. And one day Gardy will realize that your manager berating you in the press is probably not the best way to improve their confidence. This is the main reason why Gardenhire may not be the guy for this team. Too much talent coming up for old grumpy pants to beat down.
  19. The contract seemed excessive, especially since we had Deduno who is better making $500K. Pelfrey had two good years out of eight, both with a drop in BABIP and in the NL. Regarding the flier part, we could have used that $6M to improve our roster in a more effecient way in the off-season. I agree that his contract should be viewed as a sunk cost. He should be back up when he proves he is one of the best five starting pitchers we have (unlikely).
  20. I have a question about Kohl that would help me figure out where he should be ranked. How many sliders is he throwing? I have heard none, I have heard a few? If he is only throwing 5-10 sliders per outing or less, I think his numbers are phenomenal. He has never focused solely on baseball until this year and we have taken his best pitch away from him. And he has a 2.67 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 6.2 K per 9 and only one HR. If the slider is as good as advertised, he could probably mow batters down with it, but to put up these numbers primarily through two pitches is very encouraging to me. I would put him ahead of Gordon and Berrios if he is really throwing only a few sliders. I could be talked into Meyer over Sano too. I am high on Sano, but potential ace versus a great hitter that is not going to hit for average of provide much value defensively.....
  21. They paid Pelfrey what will amount to about $1M per start. Jason Marquis make $3.5M to make 8-10 starts one year. One day the Twins will realize it doesn't make sense to pay Felix Hernandez type money on a per start basis for the likes of Jason Marquis and Mike Pelfrey. One can hope anyway.
  22. It makes about as much sense to hold Meyer until July to pitch one inning in a meaningless game (for the second time) as it does to play me in the game.
  23. He was shut down last year and missed about 2 months (at least) due to shoulder soreness. I think he had just over 100 IP between the sumer and winter league.
