  1. From what I have read, his curve has nice bite to it but is inconsistent. Very few high schoolers have a good change up, but an average change up is probably not the hardest thing to develop and average would be fine with that kind of fastball velocity.
  2. I agree. I am guessing nobody on our team prepares and watches tape on the opposing pitchers like Mauer. Watching that preparation on a daily basis does more to inspire teammates than breaking a bat over his knee, or taking out his frustration on another player or ump. How come nobody ever brings up the fact that every young baseball player in this state looks up to Joe and his lack of antics and off the field issues is a great example for them?
  3. My opinion, which is also worth nothing is that Nola is regarded as having 1 plus pitch (fastball). I have heard this based on movement and it still is not a swing and miss pitch. Wacha is an exception as far as I am concerned. Most kids that are 21 with 0-1 plus pitches don't end up as aces. If we are picking between say an 18 year old with a plus-plus fastball and secondary offerings that need work (Kolek) and a 21 year old with one plus pitch, give me the 18 year old seven days week. Kolek can develop his secondary offerings over the next 3 years when he will be Nola's age. Nola won't develop triple digit velocity. Barring injury, Nola's floor is probably a #4 starter and Kolek's a good closer. Those are fairly close and given Kolek's upside, this seems like a no brainer to me.
  4. As far as I am concerned, sign this kid up. Would it really be a tragedy if five years from now his velocity dipped from 100 to 97-98? Give me upside here and the chance at a front line starter. #3 starters can be purchased in free agency, front line starters can't. Heck, we signed two #3 starters last off-season without breaking the bank and we had an offer for Garza (2 or 3 starter) that was the highest AAV offer, reportedly.
  5. However, Appel didn't sign for slot. He signed for $1.45M less than slot ($6.35M versus $7.8M slot). The Pirates offered Appel above slot money at #8, which was $3.8M ($900K or so above slot value) and my guess is anyone at #4 or #5 would offer slot or as much over slot as they could without getting a penalty. So the difference between $6.35M and #4 slot plus extra ($4.6M plus) or #5 slot plus extra ($3.85 plus) is not that much money.
  6. It should not be as big of a risk if he goes #5. Appel slipped to #8 and his parents had a lot of money.
  7. I would love for Nola, or Gordon for that matter to go top 4.
  8. Sweet. Our line NEEDS Herrmann
  9. I would not be too worried about Kolek for a few reasons. First, he is 18 and throws 100. He is not the first guy with command issues or questions about his secondary offerings at that age. With improved command and an other pitch to emerge, you could have a front line starter. You just can't teach that kind of velocity. If he needs Tommy John eventually and loses some velocity, 96-97 is OK too.
  10. Pinto has 7 HR and an .806 OPS in 112 AB. Kubel has 1 HR, .651 OPS in 144 AB. This is costing us runs right now. Giving up runs for sure now is worse than potentially, if the stars and moons align, losing the DH for 1-2 AB.
  11. Whether Josh is traded or not, I don't see Gardy making Pinto the every day DH. And Pinto's OPS is higher than Kurt's.
  12. Yes, give Kubel a gold watch and thank him for his contributions. Maybe another watch for his assistance with us getting Tonkin. It would be short-sided to play Kubel on a sub .500 team if he was hitting better than Pinto. But he is not, so this is down-right idiotic.
  13. Overall his numbers this year, 52.2 IP, 3.31 ERA, 62 K. He is walking batters at a clip of 4.5 per 9. Only 7 H per 9. That deadline can't come quick enough.
  14. If Gardy is appeasing players, more evidence he doesn't get it. He is supposed to be the one calling the shots. I have also tried making the point that Gardy is not the manager for a team with a bunch of young talent coming up, he shows it every day.
  15. Between the two, I would rather have Gordon as well. I really hope one of Aiken-Rodon-Jackson-Kolek falls to us. The upside with those guys seems to be much, much higher than Gordon or Nola. I would prefer Touki or Newcomb over Gordon or Nola.
  16. I agree, Herrmann is not a MLB player and should not be back here. It makes no sense that Kubel has seen 144 AB's, with 1 HR and a .651 OPS, and you have Pinto with 112 AB, 7 HR, and an OPS of .806. Pinto is 25 and learning, Kubel is 32. Put Josh in LF, Parmelee/CC in right, and DH Pinto on the days he is not catching. If we need to cut Kubel and take away the option from Gardy, maybe that is what we have to do. Another article idea could be adding up the 3rd catcher, favoring Kubel/Bartlett over players that can help us, the Pinto thing, and determining if Gardy is an asset or a liability.
  17. The ball was crushed. An OF has a quarter of a second to turn and run. He did and tracked it with nearly a straight line to where the ball ended up, about a foot over. Anyone criticizing his route on that play is nit picking. That was Torii circa 2004. I read he has 3 over the wall catches since last year. Only Carlos Gomez has more and Hicks has only played in 120 games over that time period. It seems odd that he has that many given every night his routes are criticized on this site.
  18. Here is what I think you were referring to. Since most pitcheres have either a slider or curve, if you lumped those together you have a huge gap between breaking balls and fastballs and change ups. One other factor maybe sliders seem harder on elbows than curves. So if judging based on how many make it and WAR, that would provide some additional support for a guy with a good curve like Touki. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/how-the-best-pitching-tools-translate-to-the-majors/
  19. I just see a bit of a catch 22 with him. Listed at 6-1, some have him listed at 6-2. Everyone says he should get bigger so he may develop power. They all say he sticks at SS. It isn't a lock that he grows off the position or a lock that bigger = more power. But it would seem like the more power he has the less likely he stays at SS. And nobody is saying he has a corner OF bat, 1B bat, etc. Before everyone freaks out, I just wanted to point out a risk. I am not saying he moves off. I know this is an extreme argument, but look at Mauer and Sano at 18 versus now.
  20. I think you could make the case that about five pitchers in this draft could end up being a #1 pitcher. I think Aiken and Rodon profile as the first two picks because of their chances of hitting that projection are better, they each have 2-3 pitches that are plus now or are close to projecting as plus. But Kolek is 18 and can throw over 100, Touki is 18, touches mid 90's and has the best curve in the draft (have heard when on it breaks more than most good MLB curveballs), and Newcome is a 6-5 lefty that throws mid 90s with a future 70 slider.
  21. My preference should be qualified as well. I am as excited about Gordon right now as I was when I kept seeing us linked to Buxton (not very excited).
  22. I think batting average in a bubble is not the way to view hitting. You have power too, which is another tool altogether (one he doesn't have much of). It doesn't factor in walks at all. .270 with 5 HR and no walks is not a very good hitter for example
  23. Sano and Buxton are as close to locks as they come in the lineup. Between DH and Corner OF spots, you have a long list of guys. Arcia, Rosario, Vargas, Hicks, Harrison, Walker, and Kepler . I wouldn't be thinking about a backup catcher at #5 and we have Mauer at 1B. I just hope if we take Gordon it is because we think he is the best talent available, not becase of MLB need. The upside just seems relatively low here, I think Newcomb Touki, etc. offer more. When I read Touki's profile I see 92-95 fastball, runs up to 97 and the best curve in this draft. A future 70 pitch. When I read about Newcomb I see 6-5 lefty, mid 90's fastball with a very good slider, a future 70 pitch. It is easier to get excited about those two.
