  1. Yup, and he can't stand defensive mistakes, which happen with young players. Danny Santana at SS. Sano at 3B. And god help us when Buxton misses the cut off man.
  2. I would argue that what is being said about Nola and Gordon here is similar to what scouts say. Most scouts have the ceiling of Aiken, Rodon, Jackson, and Kolek higher. The pitchers all have front line starter ceilings and Jackson 30+ HR ceiling. The most consistent reports about Nola is that he has very good control and a plus fastball and his other pitches need work. He is 21. Gordon looks like, athletic, hit tool may develop, will stay at short. Very strong arm. But nobody is saying perennial all star, gold glove, silver slugger, etc. The other pitchers, Newcomb and Touki...if you look at their stuff alone look like potential #1 or #2 starters. Albeit less of a chance to be in the big's as Nola. I completely agree we won't know for 5 years.
  3. He should, but I think Gardy gets his way. Still Terry's fault
  4. Agreed on Gardy. I am of the belief that in game, a manager in baseball is not all that important. The in game moves that one does are very similar to others. When to pinch hit, put a right handed reliever against a righty, etc.. The things that are important, like platooning, ensuring your moves make long term sense, batting order is constructed in a way that makes sense, etc. Gardy seems behind the curve big time. I am more than worried that the long term development of guys I really care about will be hurt. Will we move Sano to DH after like 10 games because we want to win now? You can't rule it out at this point.
  5. I think Ryan and Gardy are just on different pages. I think Terry does a good job stock piling talent, but he doesn't care to battle it out with Gardy. Gardy is playing for his job and wants to win now, so you see ridiculous things that don't benefit the team long term. So in that sense I don't think Terry is the right guy for the job. Ideally he would be your chief scout, run the drafts, and negotiate trades. But someone should tell Gardy how things will be run. Santana in CF - No. Hicks on the bench - No. Pinto on the bench - No. Guerrier blocking Tonkin, Guerra, etc. - No. Kubel playing every day - No. Still having Bartlett's phone number - No. Any mention of losing your DH - No
  6. Saying you think the guy has less upside than 5-6 others does not translate to hate. Barry Larkin has a career .295 BA and .815 OPS (9 silver sluggers) and won 3 gold gloves. I don't see anyone saying he is a gold glove SS. They say good instincts, strong arm, some even say above average. And nobody is saying .815 OPS or 400 career SB. If I thought this was attainable for Gordon I would be thrilled at #5.
  7. Agreed. The problem with developing a fastball and change in the low minors (when you have a plus slider) is you rely on the slider when you get in trouble. His ERA is in the 2.50 range, so I have no concerns and think we will have a better MLB pitcher in 2-3 years as a result.
  8. How did I miss Guerrier! Add him to the list of ridiculous roster blockage. We have 5-6 young AAA relievers with a sub 3.00 ERA.
  9. I would rather bring back Shane Mack to block Buxton and Gaetti to block Sano. Or we could trade Buxton and Sano for a really good set up guy. Lock down the 7th or 8th inning and help push towards 80 wins this year.
  10. Let's take a step back and remember which club we are talking about. In a season where success is 78 wins, the following things are happening: -A top prospect, CF is sitting on the bench while another potential future starting SS is playing in CF instead of getting reps at SS (where he needs work defensively) -A future catching prospect is playing about twice a week -Kevin C. is blocking Meyer and May -We have a 34 year old, washed up OF with a .622 OPS getting reps daily
  11. This article and this thought process is really discouraging. You should not play a future SS in CF and bench a top CF prospect because you want to win 77 games instead of 75 or 76. The manager and development folks need to get on the same page. http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/06/03/twinsights-why-a-healthy-aaron-hicks-is-sitting-for-a-second-straight-day/
  12. I guess the question is, did Machado's defense provide so much value, or was he getting a ton of attention because he was A) 20 years old and a piece of a resurgence for a franchise that had been down a long time? I think at minimum it was a combination. I don't put much value n DWAR, he had a 4.3 in 2013, in the other 80 games he has compiled .8, it is a measure that tends to be volatile. Utlimately, I agree a 3B can provide value without hitting 25-30 HR's. I guess for me when I look at the top 6-7 guys (Nola excluded as I am not a huge fan): Aiken, Rodon, Jackson, Kolek, Gordon, Touki, and Newcomb, it just looks to me like the ceiling is the lowest for Gordon and that is why I would rather have someone else at #5.
  13. OK, we are parsing words. Polanco was supposed to be a lock to stick at SS. We have moved several guys off SS, some were more of a surprise than others. Another example would be Levi, I am guessing we thought he had a good chance to stick at SS or we would not have taken him in the first round. It does happen elsewhere too, it just seems like this organization moves them off more conistently.
  14. I think Hicks should play CF and Santana should play SS. Whether the big club or AAA.
  15. I agree it looks like it is happening. Dozier looks like an elite 2B. Plouffe a decent role player. Arcia shows flashes where it looks like this kid is going to hit up here for a long time. Mauer will be here a long time. SS looks more promising with both Escobar and Santana getting reps and Pinto can sure hit. Pair Meyer and May with Nolasco and Hughes and the rotation looks like it has potential, especially if Gibson can raise his K rate. Perkins, Duensing, and a ton of young talent makes the future look good for the pen. My understanding is we have two decent position player prospects that look like they will be here next year.
  16. I think (a) was a little misleading. Machado got the attention for that line because he was 20 years old, and a .739 OPS at 19 the year before in 51 games.
  17. One exception to that rule is Polanco. He was only 16 when he signed, but he was supposed to be a "defensive wizard" who will not hit.
  18. It would be nice if he fell. Rodon and Aiken are locks in the top 2-3 picks. After that who knows. Slight correction to the article, Appel fell to #8 in the 2012 draft.
  19. While true, I have read from knowledgeable people that we don't view any of these guys as the answer at SS due to defensive questions. To the other question, I have not seen anyone suggest Gordons bat will profile at 3B. I have heard he "may" develop 10-15 HR power and nobody thinks he will be a .300 hitter.
  20. I think this is a risk worth noting for a franchise that has moved Polanco, Goodrum, Levi, Plouffe, etc.
  21. I would not be surprised if someone has said gold glove or all star SS defensively. I just haven't seen one. They all say great arm and good instincts, very athletic.
  22. I was just pointing out that they didn't get a discount on those arbitration years, or neccesarily in free agency. The last two years he will make $35M and $38M. Cabrera is the highest paid player in the league at $31M a year and it took over 7 years to increase that from $27M to $31M (A Rod in 2007 to now). The other team friendly, longer term deals you saw some cheap buyouts. Chris Sale for example will make $13M a year for the first two years of free agency when pitchers like Felix and Verlander are making $27M a year.
  23. The Trout deal made no sense for the Angels. They got no discount at all and gave him $24M a year.
  24. Here is the entire response and quote: You did not specify that your comment only pertained to 30% of what Mike said and what part. I did read your quote but I am not a mind reader. 25. The five or so I have read said average and above average defense. None said all star or gold glove defense. I think he gets into the top 5 on boards primarily because he plays and most think should stick at SS. Look at the SS contracts over the last 2 years. Guys like Andrus getting $120M
