  1. I'm encouraged by this Nunez trade.
  2. "highly unlikely" Why? I mean for a team looking to gamble on a low risk left handed starter whose arbitration eligible the next two years and not locked into a big contract.
  3. Yes you can. It's not like the rotation will not have veterans if Santana is traded. Gibson has reached veteran status along with Milone.
  4. To be perfectly honest he's nothing special. High 80's fastball most of the time, not good control. Meh best case scenario.
  5. And Santana will make that much of a difference? I like him as a mid level starter or #2 on a veteran team competing in the playoffs but the Twins are nowhere near that stage. If he gets injured or experiences any decline at all and we are in the same place again. Sorry, I hate to be debbie downer but Hughes is likely finished (I hope I'm wrong but labrum tears are very difficult to come back from) and Gibson has not developed into the starter we all hoped he would be. Duffey is a two pitch pitcher and should be a reliever unless he develops a change. So yeah I'd rather go with youth, see what we have and move on. If the right trade is not in the cards, fine keep Santana. But i'm not going to build a rotation around him because he's gone in two years. However, if you do decide to keep him you absolutely dump Nolasco after the trade deadline and go with Berrios, no questions asked. Guy has 300+ innings of horrible pitching for the Twins enough is enough.
  6. I don't want to give away Santana for nothing. But at the same time I realize he's 34 this December has had issues with his UCL in addition to the PED usage. He's not a long term fixture in the rotation anyway you look at it. In my opinion if he's at maximum value now why not trade him before he deteriorates and we are stuck with yet another Phil Hughes albatross contract? To be perfectly honest I would be excited about a rotation of youngsters even if they lose a lot of games. There are PLENTY of options available and the beauty is it would be true open tryouts. Gibson, Duffey, Berrios, May, Wheeler, Meyer (next season), Jay (coming soon), etc. Do I think it will happen? Not a chance.
  7. They already have. With the exception of last year it's been 4 out of 5 years of losing. The root cause of a losing culture comes from the front office not the players. Sure you can have bad apples and guys who don't perform, but there's no doubt that a team with bad ownership, poor player development, inept scouting & drafting, lack of moves at the trade deadline, etc., IS the culture of losing. There also NO DOUBT that Antony is the prodigy of Terry Ryan. Making statements that they are not dealing Santana unless it's a "wow" offer. It's like the Twilight zone or attack of the clones from star wars. TR redux 2.0. I mean what other GM in baseball says stuff like that after you've lost ? Are you serious about turning this thing around or not. Either way I think it's unavoidable. If nothing changes with the rotation heading into next year, this WILL BE a losing team in 2017.
  8. I'd feel good about it. The current rotation aside from Santana has been awful top to bottom. Gibson, Duffey, Nolasco and Milone have all been bad this season.
  9. Uffda don't say that. What does that mean for Meyer and May both of whom are already 26? Then it's even more imperative that the Twins move these overpriced veterans unless they have already written them off and are waiting on Stewart, Gonsalves, and Jay. There doesn't appear to be much else to be excited about. Burdi, Reed, Chargois and Cederoth are all relievers. Neither Stewart or Gonsalves is particularly overpowering. The two exceptions appear to be Berrios and Jay a converted reliever.
  10. I'm not super excited about Gibson anymore either. Guy is quickly approaching his prime years and has established a troublesome reoccurring pattern of starting every season VERY slowly. I'd listen too offers for him as well. Note he is arbitration eligible this off season and is likely to get expensive very quickly.
  11. EXACTLY! The Twins just don't get the rebuilding concept. It could be a feeble attempt at posturing for a better deal, but reality is reality with this organization. This team IMO has no hope of contending next year without revamping the rotation. If Santana were 2 or 3 years younger i'd say hang onto him as a building block for the rotation, but the truth of the matter is that he's 34 this December. His UCL could blow at anytime and the PED issues in his recent past are of grave concern. It is very likely he starts to decline soon. I think you have to seriously consider dealing him for anything decent. Remember too that we are also burdened with the Hughes contract . More importantly the Twins apparently feel obligated to start Nolasco, Hughes (when healthy) and Santana because of their contracts no matter how poorly they pitch. The time to wheel and deal Santana is now. If you have to dump Nolasco, fine. That will clear space in the rotation for Berrios, May and whomever you wish to try out from AAA. Sometimes it's addition by subtraction.
  12. I don't understand the FO. Why is Ricky given start after start after start when we have Berrios waiting for a second chance in AAA? It just doesn't make any sense whatsoever UNLESS......they are hoping to keep him in the rotation through the trade deadline in order showcase his awesome skills before dealing him to some AL team where he will instantly become ACE and win the CY young award in 2017.
  13. My thoughts exactly. A top 2 pick is do great an opportunity to throw away for a bunch of meaningless wins at this point. I'd also like to see Berrios up here.
  14. Three types of people, those who can count, those who can't and those who nitpick everything you say just to make a point
  15. My gut feeling is that with Terry Ryan gone Berrios will be up soon. However insiders have noted that Molitor and his staff are trying to change the approach of many of the younger batters (including Buxton) as well as the pitchers instead of letting them play to their strengths. Perhaps Molitor isn't the right guy for a rebuilding team when it comes to these young pitchers and hitters. Who knows how many of the yoyo rosters moves back and forth to AAA were on TR or Molly.
  16. ron gardenhire, Ron Gardenhire, RON GARDENHIRE!!!! Who wants to put money down that it's good ole Gardy as the replacement GM?
  17. HOLY BLEEP, BLEEP, BLEEP, BLEEP! Didn't see this coming at all. Wow. This is not the typical Twins way. Pohlads must be fuming over how this season is going. Now it's time for a Fire Sale. DUMP everything over 30. I fully expect to be rid of Nolasco, Plouffe, Milone, Santana, Suzuki possibly more in the next two weeks. WOW!
  18. No problem and your right. I was a bit frustrated at the time when i posted that reply and i shouldn't have been.
  19. Sigh, Yes Connor Byrne posted a source link in his reference to the Boston Globe crediting Nick Cafardo in the original article. My mistake for not fulfilling my moral obligations to TD posters in crediting a source of a source.
  20. Interesting. The Twins are looking to "jettison" Ervin Santana and the remaining $28 million left in his deal according to mlbtraderumors.com. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/07/cafardos-latest-encarnacion-jays-bosox-moore-os-royals.html One would hope they would be ridding themselves of Nolasco and Milone as well. Let's get Berrios and May into starting roles as soon as possible.
  21. Which makes it even more baffling that the Twins aren't grooming May and Meyer to be starters now.
  22. That's a good point. I don't know how many options he has left. If they are trying to conserve those options they probably won't send him down now for the rest of the season. I don't buy the closer argument either. If that was the case they would have started working him into that role by now. Simply isn't the case.
  23. Stay tuned. This isn't over yet. I know this isn't Ryan's forte but I have a sneaking suspicion that several starters might be moved, DFA'd or released before the trade deadline (Nolasco, Milone and or Santana). If that happens Berrios is back in the rotation first thing. Then May is the next in line depending on how many guys get moved.
  24. WRONG. Mad Max 2 was the road warrior. There were even theatrical posters released. See below. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f7/Mad_max_two_the_road_warrior.jpg
