  1. btw....... The TR interview is one of my favorite parts of the book. Also, I wish I had suggested this question: Minor league players are one of your most important assets. Will the Twins become the first team to pay at least a minimum wage? Why don't teams invest in better food and diets for these players, and allow them to learn bad habits of eating fast food since most don't have / know better options?
  2. Isn't that what I said? I still rooted for him to do well on the Twins.....doesn't mean I have to like his opinions or him. I looked beyond them while he was on the field.
  3. I think we are missing Nick's point, which is the point I tried to make also...... Torii created conflicting feelings for some, Flip was just the kind of individual you could root for.
  4. Why do I NEED to get over it? Why can't I root for him to play well for the Twins, but not like him as a person (and, let's not pretend he didn't also make racist comments about people who "weren't really black"). Please don't tell me how to feel. and no, it wasn't only AFTER a question, he appeared in political ads supporting politicians who shared his belief.
  5. Javier better be a great prospect, they likely won't sign any more than him this year, or they'd suffer next year (which, you know, would be nice if they went all in with their money, but whatever). Frankly, if he's really not a top 10 guy, they probably wasted their money. Burdi vs Meyer, dang, that's a tough one for me. Frankly, as bad as Meyer was last year, I'd probably rate him higher. He has succeeded at a higher level.
  6. He is a great example of why I root for teams, not individuals, any more in sports. Flip, otoh, is why you keep rooting for individuals in life.
  7. Ha, as I said on another thread, that's not me.....I'm 51 and don't really like fighting all that much. As for using money to get a catcher, have people looked at the catching FA list? That's one reason the Jays were so smart to pounce when they did, good catchers don't usually make FA.
  8. Ya, I don't get the AJ love for next year, frankly.
  9. Ha, that made me laugh....clearly it was meant that way, and not in a mean way. I still have the same wants and desires*, I just decided to be open with my name. *
  10. It's always next year. When does that year come?
  11. He holds zero value to the MLB roster, if he's never on the MLB roster or traded for someone that is. What are the odds he pitches on the MLB roster next year, as a SP vs a RP? Duensing has not been good, he costs actual money, I'd try Rogers. They know RP is a huge need, they have a guy sitting in AAA that could fill one of the roles.....
  12. Not sure why Rogers wasn't a LOOGY this year, they needed one. I don't get it at all, frankly. The others in this part? No idea, but probably not long term MLB assets, which makes sense this far down the list.
  13. the playoffs are about entertainment even more than the season is, they aren't about determining the "best" team at all.
  14. D'oh. Not sure where my brain was on Reed, must have been sort of working when typing that.
  15. It was funny the first time I saw that someone with the same name as me was an MMA fighter. We must be related somehow......but no, that is definitely not me.
  16. Didn't love the Diaz signing much either. Destined to be a 1B/DH. I would bet he does not start in CR. Without seeing them, and going only off what we read, Reed seems like an ideal candidate to move the bullpen. Obviously, Polacios is an intriguing name/guy.
  17. Kohl Stewart could be better than Gray, Berrios could, heck, Hu could......the question is, what are the odds any of them are that effective compared to his odds of remaining that effective.
  18. I don't think anyone ever said having an Ace was sufficient to winning, it takes more than 1 player. Nor did anyone say it was a guarantee of post season success. I think, though I may be wrong, that people think it would help the odds. I'd rather hope against all evidence the Twins can draft and develop great pitchers, but there seems to be decades of evidence they can't. Hope isn't really a very effective strategy. I don't know the best, most right, even better answer......but keeping doing what they did for the first 40 years of their existence wasn't working all that well. Maybe things changed for the better a few years ago, we'll find out over the next 4-5 or so.
  19. That is true, I think his point was there was not enough data for him to know if it would work or not.....but I am sort of working right now, so I can't look effectively.
  20. All of this is a bit off topic......but I found it interesting.
  21. I remember someone on FG wondering if short pitchers with stuff were a market inefficiency, but I thought that article said there was not enough data. I'll see if I can find it (which the author of this study believes is likely true).
  22. What I found interesting about the study was that he studied the effectiveness of those that qualified for the ERA title.....I'd think that excludes a pretty big group of players that didn't, and were not effective (but I have no idea if there were any notable height differences). He does address the self fulfilling nature of the data, and also the social pressure of smaller players to play other positions (both selection bias and self fulfilling issues). that was an interesting read, thanks for finding it.
  23. Anecdotes really don't do much for me, when we are talking about if a belief is right or wrong. I appreciate you feel otherwise, though.
