  1. They could have done what they have done the last 2 years, and signed legit FA pitchers? They could have not cut budget every year until this year, and tried to win. I'm not arguing that they necessarily should have, but there were lots of options other than rely on terrible prospects, and bad FAs. And, no, they are not just looking at it as a cost of the stadium. He is their starting 1B and number 3 hitter, not some ambassador.
  2. Not even a little, it's why teams are signing guys so much earlier now.
  3. This, 100% this. This is driven by their either inability or unwillingness to sign him earlier, when they could have. Then, they were unable to put enough other good players around him for several years. The question is, what to do now. Clearly you give him a couple months to prove he is good again. But if he's not, and Kepler is raking and Buxton, Hicks, Arcia, Rosario are in the OF, well, you need to consider doing something differently.
  4. In one of the thru the fences posts in the minor league area, Bob quotes scouts from other teams commenting on the Twins costing their minor league pitchers velocity.
  5. Parker's chart seems to indicate a correlation between velocity and effectiveness....... As for the Twins, we can only judge their philosophy based on their actions. Those seem to have changed some time in the last few years. We'll see if it works or not. One interesting study on FG a couple years ago tried to draw a correlation between "best tools lists" of prospects and MLB success. For pitchers, the most important tool was curve ball, not FB. I agree with the above, it is about strikeouts more than FB speed, but Parker's graph says you can't ignore speed.
  6. I'm happy they won. Nebraska might be the most heart breaking team ever this year, let's hope the Gophers can continue that (I was born in Nebraska, my whole family is Nebraska fans, but not this year, if I have to choose, I want MN).
  7. I thought we read that we changed it because he thought it would help him improve. I found it odd that he'd do that, given his success the previous year. But, I may be remembering that incorrectly. And yes, multiple things were in play. I just want him to be between the two years in terms of effectiveness (well, I want him to be like Kershaw, but I'm trying to be realistic here).
  8. Was it tinkering with his FB type mix? Two vs four seamer, for example?
  9. This part: “If there is a catcher available that can help this club,” says Ryan, “we’ll look at it.” This is an interesting sentence. Research shows that people that say will try, or think about, something, are less likely to succeed at that thing. Ryan talks that way a lot. Now, maybe that's just how he talks in public, and in private he's much more of a take control guy, but I don't know. This isn't just fluff, the research is clear. There is a reason the scene with Yoda and Luke is so iconic.....it's true.
  10. Very entertaining stuff. Thanks,
  11. Gibson was clearly the best pitcher this year, imo. This thread is about this year, so I'll just leave it at that.
  12. Dozier all the way for me. Look at the XBH and the solid defense at 2B. Not sure who on the roster is even close last year in terms of value.
  13. A very nice list. I think a legit argument can be made for all 4, if you only look at what they contributed this year. Frankly, if May stays in the rotation and his luck evens out, I think he wins this......but he didn't.
  14. A very nice step forward for him. Hopefully he improves a bit more next season also. He has talent, he just needs to consistently harness it.
  15. Uh, I think there is no reason they can't be a big time program. I also don't think Leidner is a QB on a team with that goal, nor do I think they can achieve that with him at QB. No trolling, no nothing other than me stating he's bad. And, they are in year 5, so there should be no real excuses right now, not if this coach is the guy we have been told.
  16. Nope, I can't see anything that is Twitter related. Makes almost every post by the main mod on Vikings Journal useless at work. Of course, I could just read this at home more.......
  17. Anyone want to continue arguing that Leidner is a legit QB on a supposedly big time NCAA football team?
  18. A great place to enjoy a much more enjoyable journey. BTW, Twitter is blocked at work, what did KLAW say?
  19. Not worried yet......but there are scouts that question his hit tool (and no, I don't have links, I don't remember where I read everything I've ever read). What is the thinking that "I will let this hittable pitch go by" on the first pitch, for a guy like Buxton? I don't get that thinking.
  20. First part of the year, when Dozier was hot...winning percentage? Since Sano came up.....winning percentage? Sano added no value for more than half the year, I can't see how he is MVP. It's almost like all those May wins only count for Hunter and his leadership, but not anyone else.
  21. You know, we disagree on something here, but I love how you are typing respectfully here. thanks!
  22. All the research shows you are 100% wrong about the kid thing. And, come on, Hitler is like a guy showboating? Really? edit: I'm out, I've made my points enough.
  23. Thanks for another good writeup, Seth, even if I don't actually like the content!
  24. I personally hate it, but for many, it is part of what they like. I vastly prefer to watch the elegance of the international game, but again, it's entertainment, so I get that others don't share my opinion. I do think that an argument can be made that the violence in hockey keeps the normal contact in line with being clean. I don't know if that is true or not, but I think that argument can be made. That argument can't be made about showboating in baseball, since it causes no harm.
  25. thanks for this write up. Very fun read.
