  1. Given that nearly every original member is now in a front office, I'd guess teams disagree, strongly.
  2. Hard to believe there are many fifteen year olds left, and even harder to believe if there are, they don't already have verbal deals. But, still, great to get something for a guy Seth compares to Buxton.
  3. The players aren't paid by the minor league teams, so the attendance and ticket prices aren't relevant at all to what they are paid. "take your shot" sounds an awful lot like taking a risk, and how is it different? They invest in coaches, camps, equipment, etc....often on salaries that don't actually cover the costs......it's significantly more risky to them than if a billionaire makes 10MM or 50MM or 100MM or more profit every year on their team.
  4. a player risks not having enough money while he toils underpaid (by the owners) in the minors.....The players do a ton of work, starting as teens, to get there. They and their parents spend a ton of money (and risk it) on investing in camps, and equipment, and other things. As an investment in his future earnings.....
  5. Pretty decent idea, whether the NBA does that or not. I know the NFL has a small performance pool also....... I'd like to see teams that don't make the playoffs get more money in revenue sharing if they win more games....so, there is incentive for everyone to win more games.
  6. Just rest is more important than we used to realize. Gonzalez letting multiple players get rest will help them.
  7. Mid and long term? Polanco at 2B and Lewis at SS. Maybe as soon as mid 2020...... Gordon is young for AAA, though not young for a "top prospect", so there is still plenty of time, hope, and projection there.....but I'm guessing Polanco and Lewis are always better than Gordon will be. Of course, that's a guess.
  8. Well, facts are facts. Down last year, and probably this year, even after the three mega deals. And as a percent of revenue, even more down. You can find those facts on line. As for assumptions, you are stating you know my, and other's, motivations. You don't.
  9. You make so many assumptions, that aren't even close to true here. I don't worship these players at all. As for your last sentence, that's capitalism. And, owners aren't dropping prices while salaries are dropping as a percent of revenue.....
  10. Given that no team loses money or value, what risk are owners taking? These aren't like other businesses. Also, the players are talking plenty of risk. Few minor league players make the majors. They are risking not working for real money for years. Labor takes risks every day, just a different kind. And, given they aren't billionaires, many of whom inherited the teams and risk nothing, the risk is much higher for a player, than a billionaire. They are risking having any money, as opposed to how many more millions they can make.
  11. When do you think we'll see Lewis playing in Minnesota, thanks!
  12. I don't think most people agree that they'd rather watch softball. Otherwise, those people would be making more money.... "management's money" is an interesting phrase. Why is it their money, and not the money of the actual entertainers?
  13. It's not a free market though.... There are barriers to entry, there is the draft, team control, the fact that teams do better if there aren't less competitors,or all bad competition, etc. There is no such thing as a truly free market anywhere on the planet, in any industry, frankly. And the thought that unfettered capitalism is somehow morally correct seems unlikely, just as pure communism is unlikely superior.
  14. Cave can play defense some. Cron? I think that's part of it for me. But offense? No idea if either will repeat their performance
  15. The current owners who inherited their money did not build the league either. Speaking of good fortune they did not create... ... This isn't building widgets, it's entertainment. No one is paying this much money to watch high school players. There are less than one thousand qualified players on the planet, supply and demand would indicate that makes them early under paid.
  16. If the FO plan was a platoon of 1B only types, that's a terrible plan......in this era of 13 man pitching staffs. I'd still like to see Austin get time in RF, to see what he can or cannot do there. I'm guessing it is Cron, with Sano, Garver, Gonzales all getting a few games here and there at 1B. Duda makes no sense at all on this roster, w/o an injury.
  17. Name another industry where the employees aren't free to move inside the 30 companies for 8-10 years, thereby keeping their wages below fair market value for the beginning of their careers? If you want free market, then they need to be free agents from day one, no draft, no team control. Then we'll see what salaries are. Until then, it isn't a free market.
  18. As posted above, this isn't like other capitalism....the teams depend on each other for their survival as a league. And, Congress has exempted them from certain anti competitive laws. And, like utilities, the barriers to entry are huge. It really isn't the same economic system as other businesses at all, so the conclusion that it should follow the same rules falls apart on its face. As for your CBA paragraph, that's a red herring meant to distract from real possibilities. It's a great technique, but not realistic at all. We agree that minor league players are under paid, but then the owners could just start paying them now if they wanted. They don't. That's on them 100%. The union has not set any price constraints on minor league pay.
  19. Off the topic of politics......I think a pitch clock is needed, but they need to force batters to stay in the box too....no one wants to watch a player adjust his gloves between every pitch. Except maybe the glove companies.
  20. The NFL just signed a new deal last year, with huge increases. It may be going down, but not as fast as other viewing is. I see no evidence of a correction yet.
  21. We understand your point clearly. We disagree that owners are more deserving of money than players. I don't know why you keep trying to change my mind.
