  1. Your issue is Pelfry and mine is Correia - if Garza is signed then I'm betting Correia is moved before ST. Five free agent starters -- really?? Also, Gibson's progression in the minors shows that he's a quality pitcher who just needs some big league guidance. Also, news flash, Alex Meyer.
  2. i can't disagree and I hope to hear more about this as the season approaches.
  3. I like your example but I don't think Pittsburgh fans were ever banging the drum for Cowher's firing like some of us do here don't think there was ever a doubt in Cowher's ability to get it done like there is in Gardenhire's. Cowher did make a SuperBowl early but ran into the Dallas Cowboys machine, then ran into the Belichick-Brady machine in the AFC. There have been a lot of in my opinion mediocre AL teams that made it to the WS during the Gardenhire reign.
  4. This would be the opposite of fantastic.
  5. Good catch-- the Twins led me to believe last year that with guys like Florimon, Collabello, Deduno, Bernier, that a lot of young prospects were on their way up..... I took a second look at Florimon's MiLB batting stats. Four years in A because he didn't hit. I am very comfortable starting him every day at short for his glove and batting him ninth this year however.
  6. Ouch - I will plead "selective memory" then. From what I've seen and heard I think he's been fantastic - agreeing with Reider there. Sure Florimon is young but he acts like he knows why he's out there and knows what he's doing, and then does it.
  7. I think the key word is "willingness" and even though he is now addressing needs through FA, and done an overall good job of it IMO, I'm not sure he has done so willingly. So I back you on this. Seems like people forget this is also the GM who praised player development and vowed not to take "shortcuts" not so long ago
  8. Whoa stop. I'm confused. I've seen Peralta play some Brutal defense (I capitalized the and now I see a list with Florimon and Peralta at the same place -- school me up on this or send links!
  9. This one makes my list and most of all, I love the way the fielders sell the play. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130525&content_id=48609586&vkey=news_sea&c_id=sea
  10. Love the candor.. I don't know that I'd call speed a PED in the same way a steroid is, but maybe so in other ways. I'm also on board with leaving the 90s era juicers out of the HOF completely if that's how it plays out. But there absolutely needs to be a place in the hall for Morris!
  11. Does the increase in league strikeouts correlate to an increase in home runs or power? I think of control guys like Radke who did give up homers but never seemed to be burned by the homer. How about the Twins fielding these past few years (Revere was fantastic but then there was Delmon, Plouffe, Valencia, Nishioka, etc). Lots to chew on sorry for the questions :-) I'm wondering if baseball is undergoing a structural change like NFL has, from running games to passing games. If so, I hope the Twins are adjusting.
  12. I do agree. In a fluke-y kind of way, 2013 did answer some questions about the rotation. Ryan stepped up and made some decent signings, and now let's hope a couple of the young guys step up and pitch their way back in.
  13. I've enjoyed this thread. Multiple people here have now said that, even after these FA pitcher signings (Nolasco et al) have improved the rotation, that the Twins still have a below average rotation. Which actually reinforces the point Leviathan is making, which I tend to side with. Which is that too many expensive mid to late career free agents who can pitch ok appear to be the ones getting the scholarships but then are also blocking the growth of young guys who might actually make it an above average rotation. So, the rough AAA stats from 2013 at a glance for the young guys: Diamond (41 innings) 4-0, 2.41 Gibson (101 innings) 7-5, 2.92 Gilmartin (91 innings) 3-8, 5.74 KJohnson (135 innings) 10-4, 2.39 (28 yrs old, 900 career innings at AAA) Worley (58 innings) 6-3, 3.88 Another question is what more do Gibson and Diamond have left to work on at AAA? How can TR get these guys producing at the majors so that yes we can trade a Correia or use him in the bullpen?
  14. It's also worth noting that Morneau's and Cuddyer's young MLB development process came in the middle of pennant races. and IIRC both those guys had below average defense but in the same process became assets in the field. Why can't we develop talent anymore?
  15. I like Parmelee. I'm thoroughly convinced he must have hit a home run at a game I attended once. I like the Cuddyer comparison. I also like Cuddyer. I was thinking Parmelee deserved at least one more dedicated six week MLB tryout but then Terry Ryan went in "win now" free agent signing mode, so I think Parmelee only has Spring Training to show his stuff.
  16. I'd like to see a stronger argument put forth for signing Drew at short. I see people saying he's available and statistically an offensive upgrade, but that's about it, and very little discussion of his red flags. For where the Twins are at this moment, I'd feel good about Florimon.
  17. Great work, Seth. The offseason is a perfect time for feel good stories, when all parties have time to reflect, take inventory, count blessings. In the middle of the season introducing a new call up as a "great story" is not the right time, and I very much agree with others in that respect. Question: in the original Q&A was discussion about Collabello learning third base, any new developments on that? If he is actually looking to stick in the big leagues for a full season like he says, then the opportunity is right under his nose, it seems. Also wasn't Collabello the guy who took his home run ball away from a little girl? Lol
  18. Pretty crowded indeed, a better problem to have than last spring. Gibson has AAA options that others don't, but if he pitches well in spring and wins a job, Ryan needs to let him join the club, instead of optioning him down to Rochester because of some administrative benefit. I also wouldn't be surprised to see a trade this spring if multiple guys pitch well.
  19. It's a small quibble, but Baker pitched nearly 300 more innings in the minors than Pelfrey, most of those innings at AAA. However, each played three years in college where Pelfrey had 120 more innings than Baker-- if that's because Baker had college injuries then that would certainly advance your point that Pelfrey has the more resilient arm. I think the broader decision to cut ties with Baker was political. The facts and circumstances surrounding Baker's 2012 spring training injury was much more contentious than the online news stories from the time would suggest. Not to get too conspiratorial or negative, but I distinctly remember either a Kris Attebery or a Gladden talking about it on a radio show at the time, and that very influential people in the FO or coaching staff basically felt that Baker's injury was in his head and that Baker just needed to "man up" and pitch. That statement caught my ear. Then in a 180, Baker had the second opinion and the surgery. I don't know, maybe that says more about me that I can be loudly critical of episodes like that rather than always looking at the bright side of things. (being critical vs. looking at the bright side of 3 straight horrible seasons is another topic) But whatever, disputes like this happen behind the scenes in most/all organizations. I think Pelfrey and Baker are both in the right places and that both will be effective in 2014.
  20. A similar Dome game that deserves mention was this from summer 1984 http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIN/MIN198406240.shtml Chicago pitcher was just dealing the whole game. Twins trailed 2-0 bottom of ninth. Two runners scratched their way on base. Tim Teufel comes to bat, is jammed inside, and hits a 150-ft bloop to right that "hit the seam" and bounced far, far over the charging RF head and went to the fence, inside the park home run, game over, Twins win 3-2. That was actually a pennant race that year, too
  21. Why did they have an outfielder pitching in the playoffs!??
  22. Agree with this.
  23. I loved this. I will say what others are saying though. I don't think anyone is writing Deduno off the team. It's just a sense we've seen this movie before.. new guy comes in, shows flashes, gets hopes up, disappears. That feeling gets compounded when there's literally no one else producing or being developed. This year we've brought on Nolasco & Hughes and that's a good thing.
  24. Sometimes it just "clicks" in a guy. Just pretend you didn't look at Deduno's minor league walk rates and you'll be fine. Odds are against him but I hope the Twins keep doing whatever they're doing. Between age 28 and 29 Deduno had a very nice breakthrough, for sure. Also between age 28 and 29, Randy Johnson had a very nice breakthrough as far as control. He went from a career 6 BB/9 INN to a sudden 3.5 BB/9 INN in 1993 and never looked back. By the way, Samuel Deduno is unequal ≠ to Randy Johnson.
  25. First of all, what is your thinking? Who would you like to see win it? Of the five you list, a. Diamond b. Deduno c. Gibson d. Meyer e. Worley I am going to guess Worley. I would also like to see Swarzak get a chance and/or see Albers recapture some of that early magic. But Swarzak seems to be in Gardy's doghouse and Albers honestly probably doesn't have it. Thus they are off the list. As for Diamond, the stat geek guys on TD will tell you his peripherals are horrible, Deduno is still hurt I hear, and maybe too wild to have another good season anyway, Gibson unless he pitches lights out in spring he will be optioned, Meyer is for 2015, which leaves Worley.
