  1. By sensible explanation, I am thinking just about anything besides "Vogelsong pleasantly surprised us." A guy like Vogelsong will be available if Berrios gets rocked again. Heck Vogelsong himself will be available. I like the Frank Viola example. If Berrios does struggle too much for too long, he goes to the bullpen or minors, not a big deal to me. Try him again at a later date. I also see Duffey getting another extended look soon. He pitched too well at the close of 2015. I guess it comes down to a matter of opinion.
  2. understood
  3. For years I have had a half-formed role playing game in my head, where the objective for the players would be to ensure that the assassination of Caesar is carried out. Of course there would be various ways this could play out besides just being stabbed by the senators, which would then result in different futures, and so on. He could not be allowed to die a natural death. But one of the checkpoints for my players would be to make sure the soothsayer was there to warn Caesar, which by my thinking would tip Caesar's own sense of arrogance and invincibility beyond the point of his being aware and on guard that afternoon. Any takers?
  4. I am with you most of the way, but I think people forget that a Vogelsong-Correia-Albers type of pitcher can be acquired for virtually nothing at any point in the season, if necessary. Vogelsong has a long MLB career behind him and is already under contract, we don't owe him anything more, and the talk coming from Molitor about Vogelsong making the team feels like more of the same old. If the front office decides Meija, Berrios, or Duffey (with his competitive FIP) shouldn't be starting in MLB, I am assuming a sensible explanation would be offered.
  5. I see how maybe you wedged that joke in there?
  6. Best spoken in quivering, old man voice* *Ides of March, that is
  7. Meija with 6 strikeouts.. but is he hitting his spots? Will Vogelsong be looking over his shoulder? (Insert smiley-faced levity here)
  8. All Nick said was "the ball was flying out." Interesting that you read that as "wind was blowing out" and I read it as "yep, sounds like Hughsie"
  9. Ugh, summer or winter Olympics? Neither makes any sense. Manfred strikes again. I think I'd rather there be a WBC tournament which at least MLB has some control over, than Olympic baseball.
  10. Great article, Nick. Those injuries were scary but I think Buxton has harnessed his kinesthetic intelligence for MLB and is ready to take off. He might have some down seasons at the plate, but he will always have his glove (and arm).
  11. There are no scheduled days off between April 11 and April 26, so I would hate to see Volgelsong win a job just because it's only April or something. My guy Adrianza is already in the Molitor doghouse and on the way out, barely getting any shortstop innings. I like Polanco though and as long as he hits, I think people will tolerate his below average glove and arm. And let's be honest, Danny Santana is a lock. I am starting to wonder about the new front office. I like Chargois a lot. He will make the team. Hughes, jury is out. Hope he meets his objectives and is healthy for the start of the season.
  12. Very interesting. I say that I am not opposed to Sano playing a few innings in the outfield again this season, under the right circumstances. Going into last year with postseason expectations and no outfield experience--none--it was an atrocious idea.
  13. If O'Rourke doesn't make the team, it will be because of that one single pitch he threw in early March. And people talk about not reading into spring training performance or small samples. Good times. Not saying O'Rourke (or Rosario for that matter) are destined for the HOF, but Molly sure has his favorites and his whipping boys.
  14. 1. Yes 2. Yes 3. Devil 4. Yes 5. Remains to be seen h/t chief
  15. Fair enough, but in the original article there wasn't this much emphasis or detail. There could be still more detail, like how hard was he throwing in the fifth compared to the first, or what his pitch breakdown was, and so on. The velocity is nice to see. He also hit a batter. Is he one of the guys learning to "pitch inside"? I could care less about how Erv Santana and most of the other starters do this season, as long as theirs arms aren't falling off, which seems to be the only hurdle Hughes needs to clear to get into the rotation. It couldn't have been a typical offseason for him. It would be nice to see him get a couple guys out this spring, work on some 1-2-3 innings, not just the mere act of throwing off a mound equals success. But it sounds like he feels really good, so there's that.
  16. Which other starts was he experiencing tingling and numbness in his fingers between innings?
  17. Except for the three home runs, all the other hard contact, the hit batsman while trying to pitch inside, falling behind in counts, all against Baltimore's minor leaguers, except for all of that, sounds like Hughes had a good outing too. Atteberry and Gladden can't say enough good things about it, anyway.
  18. That explains it. Would like to see him at least at AAA.
  19. Good question about Garver. He doesn't appear in many lineups.
