  1. Not much to add, except that drafting Faedo would bring back unpleasant memories of Lenny Faedo from the early '80s. Think Danny Santana but without the glove work, gap power, or speed on the base paths.

  3. The rainy weekend provided a nice opportunity for Beeker and the other Kernels pitchers to get a little extra rest on their arms.
  4. Rain and storms swept the Midwest Sunday, but Cedar Rapids managed to get in 5 innings of a double header at Peoria before the rest of the afternoon was washed out. The Kernels won, 1-0. Clark Beeker pitched the five innings. 5 IP, 1 hit, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO Beeker allowed a line drive single with two outs in the first, then retired the next 13 batters before the game was called final. The game was also delayed an hour at the start. Cedar Rapids begins a six game home stand on Tuesday. Beeker's next start figures to be the Saturday evening game
  5. If it's Sean Poppen pitching, it's extra innings. Cedar Rapids defeated Peoria 5-3 last Thursday (the 27th) in 12 innings. The game was scoreless after six innings, at which time the teams traded runs until the game was tied 3-3 after nine. Each of Poppen's last three starts (see above) have gone to extras. Poppen's line Thursday: 6.1 IP, 5 hits, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO For Poppen, 96 pitches, 26 batters faced, two wild pitches, 6:5 GB:FB. Poppen was relieved after a giving up a one-out single in the seventh.
  6. Jermaine Palacios is getting a lot of deserved publicity lately, but looking back at the Cedar Rapids game log from this night, this game looks to be something other than his finest moment. I only post this because it might be of curiosity, not as a knock against the player: Brian O'Keefe singles on a pop up to shortstop Jermaine Palacios. With Mitchell Kranson batting, Jermaine Palacios picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, pitcher Ian Oxnevad to first baseman Stefan Trosclair.J. R. Davis singles on a ground ball to shortstop Jermaine Palacios. Davis advances to 2nd, on a throwing error by shortstop Jermaine Palacios.Stefan Trosclair singles on a line drive to left fielder Ariel Montesino. Stefan Trosclair advances to 2nd, on a throwing error by shortstop Jermaine Palacios And for a good hitter, perhaps the most embarrassing indignity of all: Jermaine Palacios grounds out, pitcher Ian Oxnevad to first baseman Stefan Trosclair. Even good prospects have bad days. Carry on, everyone. Palacios followed it up the next night by playing error-free shortstop and going 3-5.
  7. Ahh, those wonderful night games. Last Tuesday night, April 25, the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Burlington Bees, 2-1, behind a strong pitching performance by Eddie Del Rosario. Game wrap here. Del Rosario's line: 7 IP, 5 hits, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K He faced 26 batters, threw 62 strikes in 92 pitches, GB to FB was 6:3. He picked off a baserunner.
  8. My point being, I don't think there are any broader trends or patterns as it comes to acquiring good relief pitching.
  9. Research would be nice, but you don't have to search long to find a guy who sped through the minors with no ill effect. For example, Kelvin Herrera graduated A+, AA, AAA, and then debuted in MLB, all in his age 21 season.
  10. There have been too many pitcher injuries in the upper minors. I can't chalk it up to just bad luck. All the more reason to get Burdi and Berrios up here.
  11. That's a good general rule, but there are too many instances of guys having success doing it their own way, outside of the boilerplate the Twins use. Now with a 9-man bullpen maybe Tonkin should be a ROOGY for a while
  12. Which game had the "orgy of lawless violence" again?
  13. Agree completely. It's frustrating to see the younger guys with the live arms being held up and used up in the minors.
  14. It's my opinion that mediocre relief pitchers grow on trees.
  15. Setting aside Burdi and Chargois, if that bigger group of guys like Hildenberger are really not any better than the current options, promote them anyway. We might find a pleasant surprise among them, like Thielbar.
  16. for a split second I thought that was a joke, and then I remembered.
  17. If you are between the airport and south of downtown Minneapolis, maybe try place called Ted's 19th Hole for barbecue. No dining in there. If you are dining out and looking for fish, try Tavern on Grand in St. Paul.
  18. I could be wrong but his pitch recognition has looked fine to me on the few occasions I have seen him bat recently. He has not been swinging at fastballs outside the zone, and he swings and misses at breaking pitches like everyone else does. Batting against Leclerc last night (44% K rate), Buxton looked like Ted Williams compared to how a couple other guys looked against him (Dozier, Sano).
  19. I think so. Most of the guys at Cedar Rapids look like promotion candidates at some point.
  20. Other people have said he starts slow at new levels of competition, so I think the best move is to let this play out.
  21. In the season prior, Becker batted 93-392 in 438 PA, for a line of .237/.303/.296 (599 OPS) Even after that horrid start, Becker finished the 1996 season at 291/372/434, with an .807 OPS, so whatever chocolate milk he started drinking was working.
  22. Just adding Becker as another name to the mix. Jetes had an 0-32 streak one April (with fewer strikeouts than Buxton has!) but you'd never be able to tell for sure which season it was by looking at his career lines.
  23. Cedar Rapids rode a 5-run second inning to an easy 11-2 win back on April 23 (Sunday afternoon game). Beeker's line: 7 IP, 8 hits, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO Beeker worked out of some jams early, but finished well. He had no walks but did have 3 hit batsman. He left the game after the 7th, at 93 pitches. His fourth start is scheduled to be in Peoria this weekend.
  24. Rich Becker on this date in 1996, 3-41 with slash line .073/.174/.098
