    PS you were right about the other All Star game pitchers starting on Saturday, however with the big caveat that only three starters pitched in that game. Sale, Santana, Vargas. Interesting that Francona sent the Minny and KC pitchers out to pitch but not the others. Funny how that works.

    Unbelievable that Mauer cut that throw. Eddie finally airmails one directly to the intended recipient and it gets cut off 15 feet in front of the plate.

    Possibly true, but it's defense we need from Polanco right now. Two of those other three you mentioned are defensive liabilities (to put it politely).

    Grrrrr.... I don't want them trading away a Nick Gordon for a two month rental, but I do want pitching at some point very soon. Like, now. We are playing a poor hand at the moment, but so is everyone else in the Central. No guarantee what the standings will look like a year from now!

    I'm getting a little peeved at all these poundings. Falvey brought in his own people, including his catchers, and they are all supposed to have analytical insights about how to pitch to teams. They had a week to prepare for this series.

    According to the tweets, Polanco booted a double play grounder which ignited the Houston rally. Polanco had a nice start but he has been poor for a while now. I'm done with him. Escobar can start at short and Polanco can be the reserve.

    That is certainly a factor I did not consider. Although, Perkins struggled the most right after the break, while RD saved his fireworks for the very end.

    As a comparison, I prefer the 1984 and 2015 teams. Without getting caught up in W-L records, or specific ages or experience of players, I think the success of the 2015 team was much more unexpected. Obviously it's arguable whether a .500 record can be called "success." There might have also been less pressure from fans to make trade deadline deals in those days. I don't recall any temptation to trade away Puckett or Gaetti, but I do recall the debate about whether the Twins should trade Viola, which they eventually did on July 31, 1989 for prospects that helped them win the World Series in 1991. On the other side of the coin, the Twins traded away shortstop prospect Jay Bell for pitching they needed, Bert Blyleven, at the deadline in 1985.

    It's absolutely bizarre how the White Sox were never able to compete with Sale, Quintana, and the host of other good pitchers who came through the past several years. Good on them. Looks like a good deal for both teams.

    Tim Tschida gave Reusse a great interview back when replay was being integrated. Reusse also occasionally begrudgingly admits when he is wrong sometimes, which is a rare thing.

    Poppen's final start with Cedar Rapids was June 29. He pitched 7 innings in an 11-3 win versus Burlington. His line: 7 IP, 5 hits, 3 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 SO The three runs against Poppen were unearned and came against him in the second inning, due in part to two throwing errors, one that was charged against him. By my count that makes five throwing errors committed by Poppen in Cedar Rapids. Let's hope those errors stay in Iowa and not follow him through the system to the major leagues.
