    Possibly. That was an interesting anecdote by a poster upthread, though I am confident Mauer in his heart wants to keep playing. But I could see him being talked into retirement by his loved ones.

    haha well, people were climbing on top of each other to praise the Logan Morrison signing, and Morrison was 30 with just one good season, ever, period.

    Well, what I'm trying to say is if Joe Mauer didn't exist, but there was a player available in free agency this winter who is one year removed from an .800 OPS, still gets on base above average, plays gold glove defense, even at 36, and is open to a one year deal as platoon partner or bridge to Rooker, this place would eat that up. That signing would get high praise here.

    well, not sure about Blue Jays, but if this was a different player not named Mauer, then probably yes? This site loves one-year deals -- never any downside to them. Unless it's Mauer.

    If you can stomach the learning curve Sano would need to play first, then all the better. I don't think I can. I'd rather have Mauer hand off to Austin or Rooker after another season or two. Also, Sano is a wildcard himself.

    Agree there must be a reasonable alternative to Mauer, but it just adds one more thing to do this offseason, for gains that are uncertain. (Think Morrison signing).

    So what are the alternatives at first if the front office cuts ties with Mauer?

    Between 1B and DH (leadoff) and some PH, I see Mauer as a 3/4 time player. That's how he has been used in recent seasons so no need to change that. I really have no problem with that. I have come around 180 degrees on Mauer since 2013-2014 when he was not hitting and struggling to learn the position (more like 90 or 120, but whatever). If you insist he only be a half time player, then that works too. Mauer could be available to late PH and defense sub in more games. That has value. Mauer/Austin is the best platoon arrangement since Mauer moved to first. It's too much of a risk in my mind to confer 1B to Austin full time yet, or promote Rooker, or exercise Morrison's option and use a Morrison/Austin platoon. And we are talking one year contracts. I wouldn't fault the front office for balking at a multi-year deal request. Hope that helps.

    Also I haven't heard any hints that he's not coming back, so not sure where that is coming from. It would be nice to know. Ted? Indications from Joe himself (after cutting through the "gee whiz-ness" of all his comments) I am confident he wants to play another season or two, at least.

    Piggybacking off the previous post, Fangraphs says Mauer is the 3rd best out of 28 first baseman for 500 innings in the field. Eyeball test agrees, and even if Mauer is slipping ever so slightly, he is still one of the best at the position across MLB. Without Mauer at first base, all the other infielders drop a notch, too. I also think continuity into 2019 is an important factor with this one.

    Yeah I guess I'd put that about 99.9% on Garver. Maybe if Mollie would have yelled "throw!" he would have thrown it... to someone. Anyone.

    Tim Lincecum made a similar play/nonplay in the first inning of the first game of the 2010 World Series, running a guy back to third base without making a throw. Really, you can only watch in disbelief.

    True, it's on the players first and foremost, but I would put the coaches third. It's inevitable that you'll see mental mistakes and half effort when a team is out of the race. Expect the follies to continue though it would be hard to beat a couple of the plays we saw this week.

    They had a broken keyboard, we traded for the broken keyboard Cave is a good upgrade from Grossman, and Austin could be strong nice bat. Not sure about his glove or potential to platoon at 1B, seems doable.

    Those four guys weren't acquired in the offseason. Other guys took steps forward. And giving the internal core a chance to play the full season, not 63% of it.

    We could go so many different directions with this post. We better be contending next year. The FO botched the offseason but they get a mulligan. They have plenty of money to spend on player salary. By the way, Oakland was under .500 and pretty much out of the race not too long ago.

    Well, shortstop was not an organizational weakness last winter. There was a credible report that Pittsburgh was asking for Gordon as part of the Gerrit Cole negotiation. I don't think that would have been a PR disaster.
