    Rosario seems to often lose focus in a lost situation (a losing game, or the second half of last year) which yes speaks to a lack of discipline. He's also our best player. Should have been an All Star last year. He's matured as a hitter from his first two seasons, and he's entering his peak years. He's a free swinger, as Oliva and Puckett were. In the context of this thread, he's the least of our worries, so yes, he gets a pass from me.

    The coaching moves are interesting, given at least two coaches hired by Falvey & Levine (Alston, Pickler) have already moved on. Not necessarily a bad thing, but would be interesting to know the meaning. I give the front office about a 1:3 chance of doing a big move just to do a move, and getting the typical praise and criticism (me) for it, regardless of its merits Otherwise I will again predict a quiet and frugal offseason.

    9 million for what Odorizzi provides is a question mark edit: like the above poster, I do like him. If he's tendered I think we'll see him used a little differently than last year (his third time through the order is terrible, but he also had some rough first innings too)

    You make a reasonable point about Rooker not contributing in 2019. However I can't quite reconcile that he will both 1. not be part of the calculus in 2019, but 2. the Twins will nevertheless know his fate by the end of 2019. I'd put his odds at greater than 50/50 that he debuts in 2019 (assuming good health, etc).

    True, it's reasonable to not count on Rooker much at all, let alone to start the season. But he's 24 and in the high minors so I'd be surprised if we didn't see him at some point. And maybe not at first base, maybe I'm being optimistic.

    I feel the opposite about first base. I think they have plenty of coverage. I was fine with Tyler Austin, some Sano, with Rooker getting a call-up and maybe Kepler getting time there in platoon situations. Picking up this new guy just seems redundant, unless they plan to move one of the above guys.

    Yes that's another thing I don't understand about this pick-up. Although Rooker does have a tiny bit more flexibility to play the outfield* *not sure how good he actually is at either position

    Actually, his World Series at bats weren't that bad overall, despite not getting a hit. He's past his peak and by the end was a role player for the Dodgers. Yes, he was streaky with the Twins, but actually played his best ball after signing an extension. Anyway, this is not the thread for that and I was responding to a comment of yours that required a response. I was playing by your rules: "Shine the spotlight on him and he falls to pieces." So I used the high viewership examples of the All Star game and playoffs.

    Nonsense. He homered in the All Star game, and he homered in his first post-season at bat, in the wild card game.

    maybe so, but it might be nice to have that granular data I was mentioning before we decide we can dismiss it. Otherwise it's just a hunch, as hunchy as my hunch or anyone else's This scoop thing came to light right away in April 2018 in Yankee Stadium when Morrison missed a not too difficult short hop throw by Sano in the 9th, which eventually led to the Yankees winning the game. That one helped move the needle the wrong direction.

    And I'm not arguing Mauer is irreplaceable at first base, or that a lot of offense at first base can't make up for subpar fielding there. My belief is that first base defense matters. As far as scoop data, I think it would be interesting to see the speed of throws, spin of bounce, distance from bag, that sort of thing, and then be able to compare similar throws with how other first baseman picked those, before having all that scoop data interpreted or rolled into another stat category. I think Mauer was one of the best, but maybe most good first baseman are pretty close. Don't know. I think moving Sano to first base is now under real consideration; he had throwing problems in the minors and to correct that I think he was instructed to throw low. And he throws hard. Mauer could pick his throws better than Morrison could. I think scooping throws is both an underappreciated skill but also something a first baseman is never charged an error for failing to do.

    Data on bounced throws to first base. We just don't have that data (we the public) other than that "scoops" column, which doesn't tell us much. Absent the stat cast data, maybe a "scoops missed" column is the next step.

    Also, if the Twins were to follow the Brewer blueprint on handling Alcala the same way the Brewers handled Hader, that would mean promoting Alcala in mid-2020 after Alcala makes a dozen starts at AAA with a 5 ERA and 6 walks per 9, in other words, so wild that he’s ineffective. And then the Twins would have to move Alcala directly to the bullpen after the promotion, and Alcala would be successful there. Seems unlikely the Twins would do something like that for a guy who “can’t find the strike zone” in AAA, or have it work out if they did.

    I'd like to see Gibson stick around. He is not only a viable starter now, but with the other guys gone he has become the union rep and De facto clubhouse leader (at least for now).

    no, but Lewis might be closer than he appears (if he stays healthy, of course). The Lewis comps with Correa and Lindor are pretty good. We should see Rooker in 2019.

    You are right about the mid-200s team. Seems like most of the 2002 ALCS players made their MLB debuts before getting any significant time in the upper minors. A lot of times they made their debuts and were optioned back down. They also had chemistry, which the 2017 did and the 2018 did not. I am in favor of early promotions but also factor what is best for the player. We should see Rooker early next season. If Gordon has another strong minor league start, promote him (or trade him, as I've been saying for several offseasons). You can always send them back down, and in Gordon's case, will probably need to. They think Kiriloff still needs more time in the minors. We should expect to see Lewis around June 2020 as his timetable and production compares nicely with Correa and Lindor. Except for Lewis, in general I agree with you now that some of our old timers are gone.

    Agree again, but they can happen. The Archer deal this summer was sort of a sideways deal between non-contenders. Just another idea, that's all.

    Agree completely, but I was thinking in terms of finding the Joe Nathan type of guys already on other rosters having years of control but not being utilized to their fullest extent.
