  1. You had me at "purist" (but then you lost me at some point To develop one of your ideas. I think just training umpires to keep the game moving would be best. This could be happening at lower levels where actually games can move pretty quickly already, but umpires could be empowered to call automatic balls or strikes against players who take too much time. I remember an at bat late last season (might have been the playoffs) where Aaron Hicks took the first pitch, then called time, stepped out of the box, and got down on the ground to re-tie his shoe. The umpire should be empowered -- encouraged -- to motion to the pitcher to pitch, instead of tolerating an unnecessary delay like that. As for the changes for 2018, I never liked the pitch clock but I would trade the whole lot of these recent changes for the pitch clock. I hate the idea of limiting mound visits, though I don't think it will be that noticeable. I came to like the 2;35 minute break between half innings. I watch a lot of games at the bars and I need that extra thirty seconds to "finish my job" sometimes. They could make it 2:00 minutes at the end of innings at keep it 2:30 at half innings. Also, replay? Manfred? Anyone? Most of all, I want MLB to stop modeling itself after the NFL. Five hour games are ridiculous and we saw a couple of those last postseason. But mostly I'm not too upset by games regularly going 3:20 or so.
  2. You could be right. I went back to look at Mejia's lines, and he wasn't as bad as I remember, especially in June and July last year he was pretty good. My impression is of Mejia's later starts, always running into trouble and Molitor getting itchy already by the 2nd or 3rd inning. ..still a #5-6 starter, imo, but maybe worth a start or two early when Santana is rehabbing
  3. If only we had additional data on Odorizzi besides his 2017 season
  4. I like and share your optimism on Berrios, but even with Odorizzi the rotation is still looking at too many #5 types getting too many starts.
  5. I think Odorizzi kicks Mejia back to Rochester (hey, somebody had to do it). I would like to see Mejia pitch into the 8th inning a few times in AAA to show he has the stamina to even get through the 4th or 5th in the bigs. He seems to unravel pretty quickly. I wonder if spin rates remain steady or if they drop off with fatigue or who his swinging strikes were collected from or if he can maintain his release point deep into a game, or, name your question. Lots of great data in this article and still lots of important questions surrounding him. Mejia is a good player to have, just not ready to trust him with a rotation spot. Maybe a spot start against a favorable matchup.
  6. It does feel like something is happening, but hopefully it's just a breaking of Boras, and not a breaking of owner-player relations more broadly.
  7. I believe you, but how much of that has to do with Tampa Bay just having better than average pitching?
  8. So let me get this straight. You like the Sanchez pick up, but are worried Odorizzi is on a downward trend?
  9. I've always liked Odorizzi. Not earth shaking but not a bad get, especially if it's just Palacios.
  10. Of that group, I think only Berrios would need insuring
  11. You are already sharing a photo of Darvish in Cubs uniform. Too soon, man. Too soon.
  12. I enjoy coming to this site to squabble with fellow Twins fans. I have been pretty consistent over the past 8 or 9 months about the best way for this team to improve its pitching -- by making a trade. Several weeks ago I blogged here that I preferred the Twins make a trade rather than pursue Darvish.
  13. and then the casual fan who takes her family to that second Twins game in summer 2018 is seeing not an 89-73 team, but a 78-84 team, and with the excitement gone in 2019, this casual fan decides to do something else besides go to the Twins game.
  14. At $19 and $18 million, Darvish would or should in no way be the highest paid Twin by then. Still not too late to salvage the rotation.
  15. The Twins were concerned about that sixth year, and Darvish accepts $18 million for it. In 2023 that will be Mike Pelfrey money.
  16. Not sure what you mean by "he reacted", but the front office has been unwilling to talk to Dozier about an extension, so love it or not Dozier seems as good as gone after (or during) 2018. Good for him. I hope he goes to a winner.
  17. Interesting, thanks. Didn't realize that was out there. One of the weaker arguments is that since the Twins offered "a lot of money" they should be immune from criticism. Maybe if Kershaw opts out of his deal next offseason (were the Dodgers aware that opt-out was in the Kershaw contract?) so if Kershaw is on the free agent market, the Twins should offer Kershaw 5/110 and then be proud they gave it their best shot and people should accept that. No. Darvish was worth more than 5/110. He is most likely worth more than 6/126, but we'll see. Thanks again. The Twins still have a lot of questions to answer, about both the Darvish negotiation and more importantly their rotation plans for 2018-2019
  18. Shouldn't Cobb have been signed by now, or was that going to be a cakewalk too?
  19. I think I saw the back half of our rotation hanging from those things
  20. Well, now Nick is telling us they actually gave up on Darvish several weeks ago. Which, on the timeline, would put us back to about the time of Twins Fest. And at that time, they said they hadn't even made him an offer yet. Which would then lead me to believe the front office knew they weren't making Darvish a serious offer.
  21. Feel free to do that yourself. This matters, a lot.
  22. by the way, what ever happened about the Twins wanting to make Darvish their highest paid player? The front office said that at the start of the offseason.
