    Athletes are human, too. Some of them anyway. Zack Greinke almost quit baseball over his mental health. Go find that clip and try to tell me Berríos wasn’t a little shook up being traded away from an organization he wanted to spend the rest of his career with. @jmlease1 When I read that Berríos is still tinkering with his delivery, I shake my head, because his delivery was pretty much the same the whole time he was in Minnesota and did not change until he got to Toronto. The Twins had the nucleus to win a World Series. Buxton and Sano, Berrios, Rosario, Polanco, Kepler, throw in Taylor Rogers, include Kyle Gibson and Brian Dozier on the older side, and maybe Graterol and Arraez on the younger side. All those guys were born and grew up in the Twins organization. The nucleus just needed some extra outside help, like Erv Santana, Ryan Pressly, Nelson Cruz, Odorizzi, they were good, but it wasn’t enough and now we’re in a rebuild again. That’s what people should be concerned about. Outside of being a baseball fan, I don’t really think about this stuff and I wish all these players well.

    He was pretty broken up about it. Right after the trade, he was interviewed in the Blue Jays dugout during a game, and he couldn’t stop talking about the Twins and the people back here and trying to make sense of the trade. It was not that long of an interview, but it was a little awkward. It was the exact opposite of the usual “love my new teammates! glad to be in a pennant race!” speech; but it was more from the heart, which Berríos has in abundance.

    We are going to do this after every Joey Gallo game, too. Casual fans love the immediate gratification, but this is baseball, and I’m not sure why we have to continue to remind smart posters on here that there’s a ‘long game’ to consider. Yu Darvish, anyone? That said, it does look like the trade did something to Berrios’s psyche. He was a good number two for us and would probably rate with Gray and Lopez at the top of the rotation if he was still with the Twins. (I think it should be 1-Wheeler, 2-Berrios, etc, but whatever). I think Berrios is a sensitive guy and was personally hurt being traded, he started tinkering with his delivery right away after the trade. You could see it. I think trading him was foolish, but maybe if he had been traded to a U.S. team he would be adjusting better. The guys we got back are not bad, but not worthy of the hype. Berrios is a strong bet to accrue more career WAR than Simeon Woods Richardson this point forward, and who knows what the future holds for Martin—maybe a Nick Gordon type of utility guy. I am very confident that it will click again for Berrios at some point. He has never been hurt. Maybe he needs a little time on the IL to clear his head more than anything.

    I mean, like anyone else, I like drawing out enjoyable activities as long as possible. However, fast paced ballgames are a godsend.

    I agree. But keeping in mind that one start is one start, Miami is not super powerful, and the Twins have him slotted in the #5 position of the rotation. Too often Maeda will walk off the mound wiping his brow like he’s been awake 36 hours rescuing by stranded motorists off of snowy Minnesota roads. (That is to say, he looks old and tired at the end of too many innings.) But for a fifth starter? Probably the best the Twins have given us in a long time.
