One knock against Mauer is that he was only a full time catcher for six years (2005-2010). Plain and simple, he just didn't do it long enough to be included in the all-time greats. For his entire career (2004-2013) his games caught per season average is probably below 100. I'm not talking games played. I'm talking games caught. He just hasn't been durable enough to be considered in the all-time greats.
Say you have two teams with identical talent. One team hates losing. The other team could care less if they win or lose. I have no doubt in my mind the team that hates to lose will win more games. It's troubling that the game has turned into people crunching formula's and numbers on their laptop. I'm with Gus and Mickey on this one. I'm glad Philip got fired.
I'll take the '87 group over this group any day of the week and twice on Tuesday. Gladden, Puckett, Brunansky, Bush, Gaetti, Hrbek, Viola, Blyleven, Berenguer, Reardon. They had attitude, but they actually backed it up with WINNING.
Batting average absolutely is the most overrated stat. I remember a few years ago Cuddyer said as much. I took it as a shot at Mauer. He liked to take subtle shots at Mauer from time to time. There was another time Cuddy got HBP square in the hand and was back in the lineup the next day. Mauer was out at the time nursing a hangnail and Cuddy took another subtle shot at him and later apologized to Mauer. Good ole Cuddyer loved to stir things up!
Spot on post. I just do not understand why the Twins are so intent on him starting the season in AAA. Why not finish his development at the major league level? Because it could cost them making the playoffs? Ridiculous. Then we got Antony on the radio basically calling him fat. And when he said Friar was the most polished catcher on the team I almost punched my radio. He's got no business in the major leagues. Him making the team is an organizational embarrassment.
I don't believe for a second Smith's plan included trading prospects. He got fired because he wanted to raise payroll. When this young group gets to contender status and are serious World Series contenders, and that 3 year window is wide open, do you think pohlad will be willing to spend the money to add the final piece to put them over the top?
At the time, I remember reading it in a couple places that he presented Pohlad with his blueprint for 2012 and he didn't like it and Smith was fired. Common sense tells you the part Pohlad didn't like was the payroll increase. As far as my source, I doubt I could find it even if I wanted to waste the time searching for it. My source is my memory. I don't make things up.
Wholeheartedly agree with these statements. They couldn't get along with Garza because he had the audacity to have the desire to blow hitters away. Smith gets a bum rap. He had alot of outside factors working against him. No payroll flexibility and a manager who almost seemed offended by talented players. Not to mention, IMO had the medical staff treated Hardy's injury properly, he would have had a monster year, and Billy never would have traded him and subsequently signed Nishioka. And like I said earlier, I give him credit for the Pavano and Cabrera moves that propelled them to winning the division.
I blame Ryan. Smith was his hand picked successor. Ryan bolted when the going got tough. Left a guy with zero experience to deal with the Hunter and Santana situations. And I'll give Smith credit for one thing. He atleast gave the impression he was trying. He made some bad trades, no doubt. But atleast he wasn't mortified to take a risk. And lets not forget the nice moves he made in 2009 (Pavano/Cabrera). Sure, the Ramos trade was bad, but it wouldn't have been near as bad if it wasn't for the fact that Mauer's made of glass. And I'll also give him credit for the thing that got him fired. He presented ownership with a plan to sign free agents and raise payroll, and he got fired for it. I'd be willing to bet his plan didn't put payroll over their magical number of 50-52% yet they still canned him. Smith gets way to much blame around here, and Ryan doesn't get as much blame as he deserves.
Wow, I stand corrected. Garza's an idiot. Or I guess he just had zero faith in himself to stay healthy. Or he was just using the Twins to drive his price up and never would have considered them because of his rocky relationship with Gardy & Andy.
What it should be: DH Kubel/Plouffe LF Willingham CF Hicks RF Arcia C Pinto 1B Mauer 2B Dozier 3B Sano SS Florimon or Drew (if hell freezes over) What it will be: DH Kubel LF Willingham CF Presley RF Arcia C Suzuki 1B Mauer 2B Dozier 3B Plouffe SS Florimon
You guys gotta stop going with this one. After the blown call, Mauer still ended up getting on, as well as the next two hitters. Bases loaded, nobody out, and they still didnt score. In nine playoff games he's had one extra base hit and one rbi. Legends are made in the playoffs. Thats why Puckett is a legend, and Mauer isn't.....yet. And to say Puckett wouldnt have had the opportunity to be a playoff hero if not for everything around him falling into place is preposterous.
Listening to Mackey today was dusturbing, but he somewhat redeemed himself with that article. Puckett IS a legend. His postseason resume alone puts him above Mauer. People defend Mauer's postseason resume because he got screwed by Phil Cuzzi. One play. And it had nothing to do with the outcome of the game. The Twins loaded the bases that inning with nobody out and still managed not to score. Puckett was an iron man. Mauer is made of glass. And there's $23 million reasons why people expect more out of him than he's currently giving. 1. Killer 2. Carew 3. Puck 4, Oliva 5. Mauer Hrbek's nowhere near the top for me because he ate himself out of the league and wasted a very special talent.
He was the starting SS for a World Series champion team. That counts for something in my book. Florimon is a disaster at the plate. Why continue the charade with this guy? The batting order is currently worse than last years lineup. I'd throw big money at Drew for three years and hope Polanco or Goodrum can take over at that point. This organization has money coming out of their ears. They can afford to overpay (heaven forbid) a guy who will improve this pitiful offense and plug a gaping hole at SS for the next three years.
Yep, there is no reason to keep willingham around. Rosario in LF is the only way to go unless dozier falls flat on his face. Arcia has DH written all over him. And Buxton and Hicks will cover a ton of ground out there, and I love Hicks arm im RF.
That would be very logical thinking if it wasn't for the fact thats not how they operate. Money not spent this year isn't saved for the following year.
