  1. I have a theory about popular young hitters with big success playing in day games after night games: Germans love David Hasselhoff, and 20 somethings don't always go to bed early.
  2. I have it on good authority (the past 5 years of Twins transactions) that Merry go Round Gibson has been pitching with shoulder inflammation all year and will be placed on the DL until he learns to pitch bet... until his shoulder is healthy again.
  3. Let's do another nickname game thread. How bout Kyle "in play, no out(s)" Gibson?
  4. I understood it. He's saying mauer's struggles are not babip driven in his opinion. His slugging suggests that he's at the mercy of luck and probably as importantly, shifts. Singles hitters play on a smaller field. Oppo air pull on ground singles hitters play in a smaller field yet. He further suggests that his so called struggles are subjective and driven by his price tag. You can disagree with either of those takes in degree and simplicity (I do) but I can't say either take is out of line.
  5. Hughes is working fast, working ahead, and using his defense...
  6. I love how calmly and professionally the team responded from a 4 game losing streak to play their best ball. Obviously kintzler had been a stud. Santiago and Hughes have both pitched themselves onto Buster Olneys best available trade targets. Between our top 3 starters and Kintzler and possibly Belisle, we could habe some valuable trade targets for once, or maybe even be in an unexpected playoff chase. Cleveland's slow start is an unexpected bright spot as well.
  7. Really similar to the one that Joe 7 a few years ago...
  8. The human body isn't really built to throw 92 mph sliders. PED era proved players were willing to put their health on the line for a shot at the show. If you don't push your ucl to and past its breaking point, someone else will. More competition and more money being about more injuries.
  9. Of course Big Erv wouldn't even be here if Ryan hasn't taken the risk to sign him...
  10. Putting a seemingly healthy pitcher on the DL does seem like the Twins... but they'll wait until Phil gets hammered a few games. They're rightfully seeing if Hughes can make an adjustment with his repertoire to get hitters out. So far it's working more often than it isn't. It's also possible his velocity will start to return within 60 days and that pitching in games will help refine his other pitches while building arm strength. But the worst argument, in my mind, is to call up young guys to "see what we've got". Scouting is more advanced and public than ever. We should already know basically what we have before call ups. Even then, a season's worth of success doesn't really tell us anything either. Dan San, Duffy, and hopefully Berrios will show that initial success or failure in the Leagues don't really tell us all that much, or at least shouldn't be the basis of determining "what we've got."
  11. Catfish Hunter > Tim Salmon? Of course, as a Minnesotan, I'm partial to Walleye Backman...
  12. I'm enjoying seeing this. I really like Buxton's at bats the last couple nights. Mauer doubling into the right field corner. Sano hitting bombs that haven't landed. Now to clone Big Erv about 4 times...
  13. Below avg career and all... grossman is leading the league in obp... and his defense had looked kubelesque (barely serviceable) this year..
  14. This is a good argument and 1 i raise in nhl circles all the time. Every level accept nhl gets by without enforcers, but somehow they're necessary at the pro level? Perhaps a hit batter above the letters is any autoeject regardless of intent. Like helmet to helmet in football. Then the cavalier attitude toward throwing up and in is thwarted without needing bean balls the other way... nhl fighting is beyond ridic, btw.
  15. I don't have a problem with any of this other than the suspension. I think pitchers need reminding sometimes that throwing a baseball at 90 mph shouldn't be taken lightly. IE don't come up and in if you can't control it. There are more important things in life than owning the inside corner. If you are going to be cavalier about it, there are consequences. There are pitchers (people) out there who won't care if they hit guys as long as batters feel off balance. That's sort of their job, but it's also dangerous if not done correctly. Throwing at Sano's hip? Well there's not much danger there. I'd ask him to step in front of a 1 hopper at third to prevent a single. He can take 1 in the hip to hopefully keep everyone else safer.
  16. BBA has Berrios topping out at #28 overall in 2015, Gibson topped out at #34 in 2010. He was still 68 after his TJ. I wouldn't say that there was a huge gulf in upside there. Neither was projected as an ace. Both struggled early. Berrios is just 1 guy. Gibson doesn't have anything to do with the future. Berrios is 50% to be the next Gibson. Wheeler, Tepesch aren't going to be part of the future. Stewart is a mess. Jay and Duffy are relievers. Gonsalves has shoulder issues, isn't ready, and has limited upside, and Romero isn't ready. Not sure what the fuss is about. Gibson needs to stop picking and pitch better. If not, we move on, but that has nothing to do with the future.
  17. I remember when we clamored for Gibson the same way we clamor for Berrios. Almost with as much fervor as we now call for his dismissal. I've seen enough of Dan San. I'm not quite ready to give up on Gibby. I don't think we have much for better options. I don't think our minor league pitchers are particularly likely to be top of the rotation guys in their primes, let alone now, before they are ready. Gibson needs to focus on just throwing strikes. It's ridiculous how many of his struggles he brings on himself.
  18. Torii loves Eddie Escobar for some reason... Which is good enough for me... Play Eddie, sit Joe.
  19. But hey, the Pacers are making it close...
  20. I love how Kinsler likes to lecture countries where baseball is thriving about playing the game the right way, then tries to cheat his way on base by pretending he's hit by a pitch that bounces in the dirt. In all fairness, he showed very little emotion as he faked pain and limped towards first...
  21. Haley's got a fake injury right? Biceps tendinitis? After 2 weeks? Who's next to come up with something that will delay having to make a final decision on them? I'll put $5 on Tonkin... and for 4/1 odds I'll say it's forearm tightness.
  22. The game doesn't look fun to Buxton right now. He's better than he's showing now. But September was a mirage. Never showed the ability to consistently make contact. Personally, I think molitor has ruined way more good hitters than he's helped assuming he's behind the "shorten up and let the ball get deep" mentality.
  23. Just saw a snippet of an interview with Bux who's talking shortening his swing and "letting the ball come to him". This sounds very Molitor-esque to me, and that's scary, mostly because it's so different from what made him successful last year. How is shortening up going to help if he's way out front on off-speed? I get trying to watch the ball for as long as possible, but Buxton has a major timing issue right now. I'd work on getting hands and body into hitting position earlier and re-implementing the leg kick as a timing mechanism. A lot has been said about Buxton pulling his head. This can happen because of bad timing as well,
