  1. Is Castro drunk? He can frame but he's having trouble catching apparently.
  2. Yeah, in his prime, one of the best I've ever seen.
  3. The Gonsalves interview in the minor league update says it perfectly. "I had a little adrenaline today, but I kept telling myself I've been here and I've been able to compete well at this level. So I was getting myself comfortable." He put up solid numbers considering he didn't feel like he had all his pitches working. In fact, in his mind, he only had one of his pitches working. "Only thing working for me today was my fastball. I couldn't get anything over other than that. Curveball was getting spiked. Slider wasn't sliding. That's what the double was hit off of. And I kept pushing my change ups. I want to say I only three off speed pitches for strikes out of 15. But my fastball command was all I had working tonight, just beating up kids on the hands. I think I went outside twice and one was the home run." Confidence matters. Being able to rely on experience while still working on pitched and not worrying if they leave the park matters. As such, Minor league starts matter and spring training matters. Even in AA, Gonsalves half admitted to reverting back to pumping fastballs. When all of Berrios' success was jyst throwing past guys and getting them to chase every breaking ball, that's what he would revert to lady season and in WBC. That's all he'd ever done or had to do. Hopefully he's learning he can have just as much success locating and out thinking hitters. In this case, it seems the work in aaa paid off. He certainly seems to have better command, better poise, and more confidence.

  5. What's the expected runs in 1st 2nd 1 out, vs 1 run in, none on 2 out? Which has a better chance of producing multiple runs? Nice play by Polanco either way.
  6. We had an opportunity to make a statement today. Instead it's the Indians who sent the message.
  7. When can I officially be excited about this team? is it now?
  8. I appreciate the thought out plan, but I don't love the rigidity. Teams should always be looking for ways to increase their talent pool, both in the majors and on the farm. You suggest that you trade from the surplus, but state that you're NEVER depleting your farm system to make a run. What if you have a surplus of minor league talent? What if you find out a guy is a club house distraction or injury risk? Plans are great when things go according to.. er... plan... but they rarely do. A FO has to be dynamic and balanced.
  9. I mean, the Royals lost Wade Davis and Luke Hoschevar to injury and Ventura tragically... I think they may have made additional moves to extend the window if those things don't happen...
  10. Royals won with the same model except traded for pitching instead of buying it. Trading provides lower risk, immediate return, and shorter contracts for less total money. Also, prospects with good numbers and avg results or big tools worth lousy results... actually pretty much all prospects tend to be overrated.
  11. That's what bothered me about the initial sabremetric analysts. They regress a bunch of variables draw correlations, and then suggest causation. The cardinal rule of stats is that correlation doesn't equal causation. Wins are arbitrary, but wins above replacement is measured in.... ERA is an outdated stat, but FIP and xFIP are trying to predict ERA?? We add obp and slugging together like they carry identical value for no particular reason. Pitchers couldn't control contact, but now that they can measure it, they suddenly can. Clutch exists in science and basically everywhere else but the baseball diamond... until they find the right way to measure it. The idea of using science to suggest that things that haven't yet been discovered as proof that those things do not exist is both ironic and annoying. Especially given the snark Bill James and others initially had. That said, the new stats are improving and do make the game easier and more fun to follow.
  12. I think his metamorphosis began a couple years ago. In 2015 he came back from the dl in an important series against the astros and outdueled Dallas kuechel. He had no velocity but gutted his way through. He's gong to have to continue to develop his change up. And his days as a top rotation guy are over, but he isn't expected to be either.
  13. See, we told you the rotation would be different by May. All that angst over Berrios starting in AAA for... wait, did you say "Wilk"?
  14. Right... I forgot that those big market fans and media outlets are so much mite forgiving. Wait... exactly the opposite.
  15. Meyer, May, and Stewart were projected to be here when the rebuild began along with Gibson Hughes and Ervin. Then we added Berrios and Gonsalves and Romero and Jay... who'd have guessed we'd get a net negative value for starts by that group? Nevertheless, the Twins have some positional talent. If we're not contenders this year, why would we be contenders next year? Big FA signing? Yeah right. Our best chance at an ace is through trade. Why next year instead of this year? If not this year, then not next year either, so then why not trade Sano for a haul since he's literally the only player capable of bringing back premium arm talent. Trade them all and build toward kiriloff and Hunter Greene in 2021. If we stick around, play it out or add now. If Dozier and Sano got hot for a series, and Buxton gets it going... If you're good enough to luck into 88 wins, you're good enough to luck into 7 more in the playoffs.
  16. The talking in absolutes is dumb. Of course you make the trade if you can maximize return. It sure looks like we should have dealt Stewart before he ceilinged out at 4k/9 and Jay and Duffy before they went relief, and Gibson before he went mia and Tonkin Reed Thorpe etc. Not all of our prospects are going to make it. Even fewer will be any better than ordinary replacement level jags. Figure out who we like and who is expendable. Then trade them before publicly calling out weight, defense, work ethic, control, ability to start, ability to stick at short, or health or whatever.
  17. I've always said Vargas is very underrated as a first baseman.
  18. Erv warned that he struggled in his last outing despite the results.
  19. I think the type of prospect matter quite a bit. Speedy athlete types need to make an impact earlier or change their game as they lose speed and add muscle. By the time Buton figures out hitting, he may no longer be elite fielder. Or he may never figure it out. Joe Benson's most productive years were probably spent trying to develop his hit tool. He never could. Speed declines rather early. Power is developed rather late. Dozier was a solid average hitter coming up. Same with Puckett. They developed their power later. Both probably lost a little speed and defensive range with that switch though. Pitchers are really at the mercy of UCL surgery. Power pitchers with wicked torque on fastballs and sliders should probably be utilized early before their arms give out. Cardinals have used that approach recently. A's also to some extent. Then trade or deal with the injury. Lower effort pitchers or pitchers that have already had the surgery will need more patience and can afford to debut later as they work on control and out-thinking hitters (experience).
