I think you might want to reconsider that logic. There is plenty to complain about but that pick is not among them. Literally every team in MLB passed on Judge, including the Yankees. They picked Eric Jagielo who does not look like he will ever play in the majors with the 26th pick and took judge 32nd. Kohl Stewart was a consensus top 10 even top 5 pick. To suggest it was incompetent to pick Stewart ovber Judge is to say that everyone involved in that draft for every MLB team was incompetent. The pick I hated was Tyler Jay. Benintendi and Happ were picked right behind him.

That strike out would have only been the 2nd out but its hard to argue that the Twins chances would have been much better had the proper call been made. I am ready for electronic balls and strikes. It's just too much to expect a human to make calls with precision on a 95mph pitch with movement and the impact of bad calls is significant. It also will eliminate the time guys spend standing outside the box muttering after a call they disagree with.

I think they can do better too but Ben Revere managed to find work at the ML level for a long time with the same profile.

Monitor: Manager of the Year and Fired?
Major League Ready replied to caninatl04's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I just don’t know the answer to some of the most important elements in terms of whether I think they should extend Molitor. Does he lead / utilize his coaching staff. Does he identify objectives and use his staff effectively to pursue those objectives? Is his experience and method of working with young players a significant part of the development we have seen in our young players? Do the players work hard at developing their skills as a result of his leadership? Does his leadership style help build team chemistry and desire to win. How is he adapting to analytics? I had heard or read that he is working with someone from the analytics department to construct the somewhat unusual lineups that some have criticized. It does appear to be working. -

Perhaps professional sports should operate under the same guidelines and the fact is that baseball is hiring a lot more corporate types for this very reason. The industry has figured out the baseball guys were lacking some skills and often had poor policies and practices or lack thereof. Unless you have been a baseball executive, you don't really know how these things are handled. I would add that GB's response that this is not how things should be handled by a business is in fact a direct and to the point response. All of the subsequent explanation of why it is common practice validates his response. You are welcome to the opinion that you have a superior understanding to all of those corporations outside baseball as to how this should have been handled but this does not diminish the substance of GB's response, IMO. -
Buxton's ability to learn
Major League Ready replied to Richie the Rally Goat's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
These two were the most likely way for the Twins to progress for sure but there are a few guys that have contributed to their progression. Who would have believed Polanco would have come on the way he has and earn a spot in the 3 hole. Rosario has made considerable progress although he has definitely regressed defensively. Hildenberger and Busenitz have become important contributors in a very short period of time. And, let's not forget Joe Mauer who is hitting like the Joe of old and fielding like a gold glover. The progression of these guys along with Buxton are the difference between 100 losses and a team above 500 that's a lot of fun to watch. Add one good SP and a more seasoned Meija and this is a 90+ win team. Not to mention we have a couple more power arms that should make an impact in the BP at some point next year. -
Should the Twins offer Mauer a Koivu-like extension?
Major League Ready replied to Monkeypaws's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I have really enjoyed Joe's play but I would try to sign him on a year to year basis. If we are going to commit to big money for multiple years, why not go after Justin Smoak if Roker, Sano or someone else don't fill that role.. -
I don't understand why you are referring to his weight when he reported. He reportedly weighs 280-285. If he were to lose 25 pounds would put him in the 260 you suggest he weighed in training camp. Anything below 260 would be a great. He is 24 1/4 years old and he has put on at least 40-50lbs since he reached the age when men stop growing.. If he has built that much muscle, something is horribly wrong with type of training he is doing. He had more than enough power when he was 20 so it would make no sense to build that kind of bulk.
-
Let's be careful not to generalize all of the comments. Many, including myself, believe there are two simple constructs in play. One, he was full-grown 4 years ago when he was considerably lighter. It's not as if he has 7% body fat. He could certainly shed 20-30lbs. What type of effort is required for Sano, none of us knows. It varies considerably. Two, it would be advantageous to his performance and health if he were 25 lbs lighter. The dual standard is interesting. We expect the organization to do EVERYTHING possible to win. Is this not the general expectation. Then, when someone expects an athlete to manage the weight it's an unfair expectation. Is the expectation of managing one's diet sufficient to maintain a slightly lower playing weight that demanding?

There MIGHT NOT be legal issues but that determination is NOT for employees to make.. That's why there are guidelines in place.. There are considerable HR related issues associated with undermining the authority of the direct supervisor.. If you want to get on management for this one, you might as well just announce you are going to take the players side no matter what. -

Each new situation is an opportunity for DM to show he has grown in character (improved upon a con) and that he is developing this skill set. Of course, this would provide his agent ammunition with prospective organizations. "I demand to know who fired me" Geez .... It is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. -
Maybe we can trade for Hicks.
-
It's this simple ... Catchers are probably the most scare commodity in baseball. I was pretty shocked we got more than a six pack of beer for JRM and we got Moya who seems to have a decent chance of sticking at the ML level. It would sure be nice to get lucky with Moya because right now the Hicks for JRM trade is a real bust. Let's just hope Garver can be a decent platoon or the new regime does a much better job trading for a ML ready catcher.

The response from Maverick at the end of the movie when he tells his CO he wants to be assigned to Top Gun comes to mind. I believe he said "God Help Us".
-
I am really tired of the past balls because they can be so costly. However, what's the point of complaining when there really was not a reasonable alternative that would have likely been more productive.. I wanted to trade for Kershaw and Kluber too but we don't have Brain Duensing anymore.

This is the real question and a primary example of why none of us should take too hard of stance on a situation like this one. I would guess they have specified guidelines. Of course, given all the potential circumstances, guidelines are not nearly enough. Has Steil discussed this with DM. If not, thats a problem with Steil. Perhaps this explains him getting a new role. Maybe his weakness was leading the MiLB managers. Perhaps they had talked to him about this issue and he just ignored them. Thus, no new contract. Who knows? Maybe Levine intended to call DM after Steil delivered the news until DM acted out with the media. We just don't know nearly enough to assess the situation. That does not mean we cant beat the heck out of the issue but we should understand the limitations of our access and the potential giant holes in understanding what happened and why. -

Agree on all 4 points and would add #3 is the primary influence here regardless of how some would like to paint this situation. I have never have even considered firing someone who reported to someone below me in the organization. It's just not done. That would be problematic on many levels. People will expend considerable effort researching baseball history and/or statistics in supporting a point but these types of topics draw many unsubstantiated / unsupported opinions. Try googling best practices for termination. The position that Levine should have made the call is one of inexperience and/or fanaticism. -

The reason was about as basic as it gets in business. There odds, as specified by numerous outside sources, were very low of even getting the wildcard much less a playoff series. Yes, at the moment they are beating those long odds and we should be happy. However, they have a couple of words for managers who makes decisions to do things in spite of longs odds. Incompetent and Terminated come to mind. I would even concede its possible that one more reliable arm in the pen could make a difference but your constant inference that our current leaders are not pros and are not ready is just self-indulgence. Their track records are well-established. -

This is from being framed in a box.. I have seen this close up in the largest corporations at this level for 30+ years. This is standard procedure. The box is not a sample, it is the hundreds of thousands of scenarios that led to this be standard procedure. You simply want to insist this should be done another way when every major corporation in the country has learned this is the way it should be done. You might want to consider the depth of experience and expertise that has lead to this process being done the way its done when you conclude its classless and that you have superior knowledge as to how it should have done. We live in an extremely litigious country. The legal ramifications heavily influence these procedures and that's just reality.. In addition, DM had almost no relationship whatsoever with DM so the connection between DM's 20years of service is not Falvey or Levine. It's the guy who gave him the news. Much more appropriate than Falvey or Levine calling him. In not releasing the details, the Twins were professional or with class if you prefer that term. The poor reaction here was once again on the part of DM. We are also assuming there was not a follow-up call from Falvey or Levine saying Doug we really appreciate your 20 years with the organization and wish you the best. Perhaps even offer some indication as to why they made their decision. Had DM acted more professionally, that call would have had a greater chance of happening. -

Are you really saying the expected norm is for a guy who is not the guys boss should fly across the country to tell a guy they are not renewing his contract? You are expect something far beyond the norm to be done and lets keep in mind this exceptional treatment is being expected for a guy who defied the direction he was given. I have done business with about half the fortune 500 hundred over the course of my career and in the vast majority of cases someone who refused to follow directions and had no filter would not only not get preferential treatment when there contract was up, they never would have reached the end of the contract. IMO, this is a case of defending a player over management with disregard for the facts. I reported to the CEO my last 3 jobs and never once was there even a thought of them having a conversation with someone I let go much less a contract that I did not renew and there have been well in excess of a hundred such contracts. I can see saying it would have been nice had Falvey or Levine called after the fact because its simply not correct to have the highest authority fire someone that does not report to them. However, to be in the least bit outraged is (well) outrageous. Plus, he might have received that call had he handled himself professionally. For all we know, Falvey or Levine did call or still might call at a later date. Fans is drawn from Fanatic so I guess I rational interpretation of the events should not to be expected. -

He refused to embrace analytics.. I would think that alone would be enough to support not renewing his contract.. The old regime was rightfully admonished for not be aggressive with analytics and now the new regime is being admonished for removing people flat out refuse to consider analytics. That makes absolutely no sense. Apparently, he did not follow the guidelines established for pitchers. Middle managers don't get to ignore established policies.. I would have given him a warning the first time and fired him on the second. Participating in a physical altercation with another manger might have also been cause for firing or at least not renewing his contract.. He also had a long established track-record for reacting poorly and no filter with with the press.. There seems to be more than adequate reasons for not renewing his contract. Even if he had been fired as opposed to not renewing his contract, firing is ALWAYS done by the supervisor.. A long-time employee may get a call thanking him/her for their contributions. However, when you disregard the instruction/policies of the organization, you are less likely to get such a call and when you run to the press and cry the likelihood is further reduced. There was constant complaint here about the Twins Country Club, yet people are complaining that the new regime they wanted does not continue the country club ways. -
This team is still young. Just when I thought Rosario’s approach or lack thereof would result in him being a 4th outfielder, he got better. His ABs last year and the start of this year made Vlad Guerrero look like Wade Boggs. The AB last night and some others recently in key situations have been poor. Hopefully, he learns to intensify his plate discipline in key ABs. To call for a trade of a guy who has been one of the best players on the team because of a couple bad ABs is just silly. Sano’s plate discipline has been very inconsistent the last couple months too. Should we trade him too? Then there is the fact that SPs are the most scarce commodity in baseball. We are not getting a MLB ready front of the rotation SP for Rosario.

Whiff Of Success: Gibson Making Bats Miss
Major League Ready replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To give some innings to the guys that were called up. The six innings were plenty in terms of continuing to reinforce the changes he has made in a game situation.. At 17-0, why not save his arm for the playoff run. -
Regarding and Re-evaluating Mauer Yet Again
Major League Ready replied to DocBauer's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I have to admit I am surprised to see this resurgence of the old Joe after 4 mediocre years. He has been a very important part of this team being in contention for a wildcard spot and his defensive has been stellar. He deserves a gold glove this year.
