Yup, if the plan is to sell off current assets for future assets because this team isn’t good, then the FO misjudged badly. This team has been in the making for 6 years. This team didn’t get tore down after crapping the bed in epic fashion last year. And this team continued where it left off last year. i don’t necessarily agree with Matt’s prescription, but if he believes Falvey needs to sell aggressively, then the only answer is to fire an incompetent front office. They didn’t just miss one off season in a couple minor acquisitions if the prescription to sell aggressively, they missed a bunch of decisions over several offseasons and misread the ownership too. edit to add: @Matthew Trueblood excellently written piece. The dithering is absolutely maddening with this team. -
What’s the point of this post? There was a whole article written about why Clemens should get more playing time at the expense of France.

You nailed it. Why would a collection of baseball owners who have exemption from antitrust rules collectively take action to increase the value of one of the owner’s asset? It raises the value of their own assets too

Compensating for injuries can cause bad mechanics. It can take a while after injury recovery to correct them.

Wallner has underperformed expectations this year, but was the 5th best hitting RF league-wide the last two seasons and is 27 and in his first year arbitration. Trading him would take a truckload of prospects. Super-duper valuable! also, Clemens has been a MUCH better hitter than France (as has Wallner). Lewis having a bad season is a major reason why the Twins hitters have struggled to produce runs. I think selling low is a mistake. It might be to the point where Royce needs another IL stint and extended rehab assignment. My uneducated guess is his legs are still hurting/injured. Get him right/healthy and we may get the superstar back. as to the “alleged pitching pipeline”. It’s not so much alleged as it is proven. The Twins pitching staff for 2025 have accumulated 13.9 WAR as of the all star break, second in MLB, 3.7 FIP ranks 5th, 4.07 ERA ranks 19, 9.6 hr/fb ranks 1, 15.7 k/bb ranks 4. They’re down their first, third, and sixth starts, getting into the 8th man in the rotation and still getting a competitive game every 5th day is a huge example that it is working. Yeah, they need another starter, but it’s the hitting that’s the problem.

In 2023 and 2024 Wallner was the 5th best hitting RF league wide. Ed Julien had a very good 2023, but sucked in 24, worse in 25. Very different situation, very different position.

Move on from a guy in his first year of Arbitration? yeah, he’s having a down year, but holy crap it’s hard to complain about the previous 2 years. i firmly believe he’ll figure it out again soon.

When I purchased my small business it was an asset only blue sky sale. Both of M&A ventures that my employers went through in the hundreds of millions and billions were equity sales. One a leveraged buy out, the other public stock. On an enterprise sale this large with this much risk exposure and tax implication, I would not make the assumption of asset only. The remaining risk exposure without the future revenue would be untenable for the Pohlad Companies, as well as the capital gains impact. remember, they bought the franchise for $44m, and are selling it for $1.5b. Asset sales are regular income tax up to 37% fed and 18% state. Equity is taxed at capital gains, 10% state and 10% federal, that’s $675,000,000 minus $300,000,000 equals $375,000,000 tax savings, plus another $400,000,000 in debt relief. For $775,000,000 I’m pushing hard for equity sale

Correct, today the mn Twins LLC owe somebody (maybe the Pohlad company) $400m. The asking price is $1.5b and include the debt in the sale. In other words the Pohlad company are selling The Minnesota Twins LLC, not just the assets/brand. edit to add, the new owner of The Minnesota Twins LLC would take over the debt. If the debt were to the Pohlad Company, this would be a sticking point, especially because it exceeds the MLB rules on how much debt to equity a team can have. It would make sense that the MlB would buy the debt like a mortgage being bought from a bank by Fannie Mae.

Perfectly fair. As it sits, they’re 5 games back of a wild card, and only the Tigers are really playing well in the AL. The Twins pitching has stopped the bleeding and Pablo should be back in August. If the Twins can start scoring runs again, they can make up ground in a hurry.

I’d like to see a trade for a good hitter, probably an expiring contract 1B, and optimism that Correa and Wallner snap out of their funks. If the team doesn’t make a post season push, then fire the FO and let the new FO make the long term decisions.

If the FO is terrible, why should we want them to trade assets away that have contracts past this year?
